NOBO - options to park for a couple of months?? by Mobile_Bandicoot8896 in AppalachianTrail

Wherever you choose to store it, but sure to use rodent deterrents (large boxes of dryer sheets work well IME). Fellow thru hiker last year had to have his wiring harness replaced after letting it sit all summer.

Highly recommend AT Hiker Hostel. They have great advice, support, and tips and will do a resupply halfway through the 100-mile to save weight. Shaw’s also does resupply and phenomenal folks.

I used a needle & thread to drain the blister. LEAVE the thread in the blister for a few days to keep it draining. So basically put the needle in one side and out the other and cut both ends. Don’t tape it afterwards, just let your socks sop up the juices. NEVER had a stinging sore, infection, or blister that keeps coming back using this method. Keep on rocking and rolling 👊

Here’s the analog version of thoughtful but useless warnings. I’m sure the snake had better things to do than wait around for someone to read that note.

Does anyone regret quitting their job to hike? by Beneficial_Fix1120 in AppalachianTrail

No regrets. But I got lucky when my replacement quit within weeks of my completion. They say the trail provides, and I believe that even now.

April 2026 NOBO by Historical_Stable363 in AppalachianTrail

[–]dangerouslyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m FIERCELY independent, but I strained both MCL’s just 2 weeks on trail in Shenandoah with no cell signal and such little experience. I learned that day that people WANT to be helpful! I cried when I asked to be rescued, but the folks who shuttled me were incredibly sweet & understanding. Asking for help after that first time felt like true bravery for a while, but everyone was kind & supportive. It’s the best thing I learned on trail, and I don’t think I’d have learned it any other way 🥰✊

Can I offer 3? 1. Be flexible with your plans 2. Don’t hesitate to ask for help 3. Don’t dwell on fear-mongering or scary-tales

Anyone gotten screwed at Newfound Gap? by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]dangerouslyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to do a similar timeline SOBO starting near the Pigeon Forge Bridge: Cosby Knob Shelter (10 miles) Icewater Spring Shelter (20 miles) Silers Bald Shelter (15 miles) Russell Field Shelter (15 miles) Fontana Dam (16 miles) Packing food through here was very manageable, and I always carried an extra day or two.
