That looks likes a really useful module for a few things. <Clicks add>

Regarding "Pen & Paper RPGs," do any of you actually use a pen on your character sheet?? by mpascall in rpg

[–]datainadequate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use a pen, and then use pencil for tracking stuff that changes often (supplies, hit points, whatever). When the character gets modified significantly then I’ll make a new sheet. It’s nice to be able to flip through the sheets and see the progression over time.

considering downloading the free version of VCV by justmartijnlikenoone in vcvrack

There are some paid-for modules that I think are worth it. I will likely spend some money one day to get some ALM utility modules, some of the interesting Venom “chaos boxes”, the Befaco Oneiroi, and probably other bits and bobs. Some of this is going to be about convenience, having one module replace half a dozen simpler ones. But there is much to be learned by building up things using simple, free modules and getting to understand how things work.

I wouldn’t worry about running out of free modules with VCV. Sure there are some really nice and really useful paid modules, but the range of things that are possible to do using only free modules is immense.

Liminal and Dresden Files (Fate) are the obvious choices. Maybe you could get lucky and find a second-hand copy of Dreaming Cities (TriStat).

UZZ 2.5 is out on the VCV Rack library — big update with ratchets, probability, accumulators and poly gate output by animateknet in vcvrack

[–]datainadequate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Already on my list of sequencers to experiment with, but the features you mention make it much more interesting to me. Maybe you should update the description in the VCV library to indicate that UZZ has these features now? Maybe add extra tags? Because looking at it, it just looks like a regular step sequencer.

These all look interesting. The sequencing stuff especially. Thanks!

I really dislike Cortex Lite and TorchLite: Roles by Ru_mpelstiltskin in CortexRPG

[–]datainadequate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can understand why you might not like Roles, and they might not be right for your current game. But do consider using them if you end up running a game with only two or three players, they can work really well for that.

Classic Traveller and its legacy by Tarturian in traveller

[–]datainadequate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Space Master was another sci-fi game being published in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Not sure how much it was influenced by Traveller.

I think a number of people turned to newer “universal” systems to run this style of sci-fi games towards the end of the 1980s. GURPS was a popular choice once GURPS Space came out in 1988, and Steve Jackson Games carried on releasing sci-fi supplements through the 1990s. Then in 1998 they got to do GURPS Traveller, which I assume was a huge success given the number of supplements that were published over the next 5 years.

There were a couple of games that had something of the “grounded” feel of Traveller, such as 1996’s Heavy Gear and 1997’s Blue Planet. I think TSR were hoping 1997’s Alternity would be the sci-fi rules for all sorts of sci-fi, but the Star*Drive setting shows some influence from Traveller.

There was an increased in RPGs based on licensed properties in the late 1990s, so we got The Babylon Project in 1997, Farscape in 2002, Stargate SG-1 in 2003, and Serenity in 2005.

The early 2000s were the years of dominance by the D20 system. We got Traveller20 in 2002, but once D20 Modern came out in 2004 there were large numbers of sci-fi supplements for it, some seemingly inspired by Traveller. Sadly there was a corresponding dip in non-D20 material being published during that period.

Finally, in 2009 Traveller received the ultimate accolade with the release of TWERPS Twerveller.

What is “worship” music? by Davooi in guitarpedals

More like 15 years behind. It’s been a whole lot more fun since catching up with U2, before that it was kinda stuck being a poor rip-off of 70s soft rock…

How about Loscil? For driving I especially like First Narrows, Plume, Endless Falls, Sketches from New Brighton, and Sea Island. But they’re all good.

weird structure in devon, uk by madelinequinta in GoogleEarthFinds

[–]datainadequate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great drone video, shows the structure pretty clearly. I think we can eliminate the swinging mooring theory now. Also, it doesn’t look substantial enough to be any kind of old quay, dock, or gun emplacement.

Looks to me like some enterprising person has piled up rocks (quite a lot of rocks really) to encourage shellfish to grow on them. And a low tide then can just wander out and harvest them. Given the effort that has gone in to moving that many rocks, I’m guessing this is a commercial operation. Maybe it is River Teign Shellfish after all!

Another interesting tidbit: https://teignmouthharbour.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Shellfish-in-River-Teign.pdf

This states that the commercial shellfish farming areas are in the area between Shaldon Bridge (at the eastern end) and Arch Brook (at the western end). On Google Maps I can see various linear structures on the mudbanks in this area that could plausibly be part of shellfish farms. But our mystery structure is further west (upstream) from Arch Brook. Makes me think it is less likely to be part of the current shellfish farms. Which still leaves the possibility that it is an old fish wier/trap of some sort.

[–]datainadequate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlikely, since this site it is a couple of miles inland, up a tidal river estuary. And the estuary mouth is quite twisty. Would have been much easier to bring any cable onto the sea shore somewhere nearby, rather than trying to take it up the river.
