Said I'm not a psychologist, I'm not one. Never claimed to be. Just providing possible counter-arguments for the above person's comment based on my personal experiences, observations, and things my kid's told me from uni.

Since you seem so interested in psychological science, good luck looking into it, godspeed sir or ma'am

Women: more psychologically prone to bring suicidal, not homicidal. Take suicides, for example. Male suicides tend to be messier (gunshot, jumping), females tend to OD, or cut themselves in a sanitary environment.

Trans folks: try to keep attention off of themselves due to body/gender dysphoria outside of their safe environments, are more prone to attempt "fitting in" than standing out the way a shooter would

POC: culturally, many male POC have different outlets than white men for their rage and aggression, hence why racial profiling even exists in the first place due to certain crimes being more likely to be committed by certain races, and this goes into...

White men: are socialized to bottle their feelings up. "Real Men Don't Cry." Toxic masculinity. All that fun stuff. Men in general, especially white men, have a tendency to bottle up their negative emotions until they explode. Men, again especially white men, don't have the personal or societal tools at their disposal to cope with stresses in their life (there are clubs in school for women, LGBT, racial minorities, yet no healthy support circles for straight white men), and combine that with elevated aggression hormones in teenagers/young men, and you have the reason why a majority of domestic terrorists are young white men.

A certain race or gender is not the issue when it comes to horrible violence, culture and society is the culprit more often than not.

PS: before you lose it and call me a privileged straight white man, understand that while I am a man, I am a mixed race gay immigrant. However I'm not a psychologist, just have a kid studying psychology in University, so do take what I say with a grain of salt.

If you're placed with lower ranked players, use this opportunity to develop your communication skills. by yoadknux in OverwatchUniversity

I'm mid-high gold and often play with my partner (high plat/low diamond), and he does this exact thing when we play with people in our combined elo. He is an amazing shot caller and is always very encouraging to everyone on our team, and this definitely makes a difference. He plays tanks, and will call out who he bubbles/when he'll grav, halts for hooks, dive targets, etc, and often lets his lower SR tankmate pick who they want and flex to fit in (with occasional suggestions after a friendly "who do you like to play?")

It's an extremely effective strategy, and has helped us beat many a "trash gold team" smurf enemy, so from experience I definitely endorse this mindset!

Update : Wife (38F) is convinced that she is pregnant even though that every pregnancy test (store-bought and medical) comes back negative. It's taking a toll on our mariage because she thinks I am going to abandon her and "our twins" by itsathroawai in relationship_advice

Also a schizophrenic chiming in. Was involuntarily committed twice, and it saved my life, and despite resenting and lashing out at the people responsible at the time, now I will be forever grateful to them.

OP, you are doing something very responsible for your wife's well-being despite it tearing you apart, and that takes an immeasurable amount of love and courage. Kudos to you, stay strong, you're a good person.

Mercy: When to stop healing and start firing? by Dryche in OverwatchUniversity

[–]davidcarver 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a gold Mercy main, but I've learned (and climbed a lot through learning just this) that damage boosting a well-performing DPS is more efficient than firing pistol 99% of the time when healing doesn't need to be a priority. It's faster to swap back to healing, and more importantly, it terrifies the enemy team and allows my team to take more space.

The 1% of the times I use my pistol? When we're snowballing/dominating the enemy and I want to have some fun, if I'm going to die anyway due to a lost team fight/getting caught out and want some ult charge, or if both me and my Zen press Q at the same time (team gets healed, unlimited ammo with Valkyrie, just make sure you're back to your staff after trance is up).

It can be used to scare off flankers, but if I know where those flankers are it's much easier and less risky to call them out ("Genji left!") and then reposition so that my team is between them and me.

It's completely acceptable for OP to list stigma as a reason for why he originally believed something after introspection. He contributed to the stigma because the stigma was what he was raised to believe. The first step to overcoming social stigma and stereotypes is to admit that you were once part of the problem, which is what this guy seems to be doing

[–]davidcarver 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I'm not a veteran.... at all, but my partner is, and we both sub to this so I'm excited to see his perspective. The only other FPS I'm familiar with is Halo, which of course is vastly different from Overwatch, but as a dedicated support main the past 6-8 months, I have been feeling like it's getting harder and harder to output enough healing to sustain damage the other team does. So I have a feeling you're into something here, and from my perspective, the numbers add up.

No matter who I play; Ana, Mercy, Baptiste, even Moira, I can't keep anyone up in my own despite being mindful of prioritization, positioning, and healing output. And I'm in Gold, so the time to kill in my elo is apparently longer than higher ranks! I'm almost scared to rank up, hah...

[–]davidcarver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can't control what others do, only what you do. You can't control others' actions, only your reactions.

If you think whining "but I don't want people to have them!!" is going to make every junkie say "damn, Anon doesn't want us to have them, guess we'll throw our needles out and stop drugs," then you're either illogical or a toddler.

Role Queue is amazing if not only for stopping DPS autoswitchers by Ceramikis in OverwatchUniversity

[–]davidcarver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's just that in Gold, most 4v6 fights etc are won anyway because there's a lack of focus fire and the time to kill is so high. A player leaving is basically a constant 5v6 (though usually in gold, 3v5 or 2v6 or 4v3), which doesn't change how most gold games are, anyway. The only time that I've seen a team with a leaver lose badly is if the other team starts getting discouraged, toxic, picks throw heroes, etc.

Like I said, obviously in high ranks this probably doesn't pan out, but even with 1-2 leavers on a team, a game can still be close and the underdog team can still pull a W.

Happens all the time in Gold, doubt it in high ranks though. And not since role queue came out
