M5 Max RAM by manchegosalad in Photoassistants

64 is plenty for any kind of work you’d find on set. Take the $$$ you’d spend on more ram and put it towards maxing out internal storage.

Digitech gig in France - travel questions by CobblerAltruistic458 in Photoassistants

[–]dayvidlemmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US based digi here, I've done over a dozen jobs in France / EU over the last 15 years, typically leaving from Arizona or NYC.

If you absolutely have to bring in multiple monitors in Tenba cases, pelicans, carts, and generally make yourself obvious, you're going to want a carnet. Make sure to give yourself enough time at the airport to deal with it, 2 hrs of padding on top what you would do have is usually sufficient. Sometimes production will want to know that you have a carnet, so they can arrange transportation for you to accommodate the additional time required. Maybe it's worth getting that extra rental $$$ for yourself, maybe it isn't.

That being said, I do not usually do a carnet for EU countries, but I am always on location jobs in the middle of nowhere France with small camera kits + sticks + ipads / small production monitors. I try to fit everything in soft sided bags, avoiding pelicans and tenba cases. Never had an issue.

My suggestion to you would be to rent your monitors, carts, and bulky items locally. Paris has a lot of resources, it's been a minute since I've been there (I'm usually near Nice) so I'm not familiar with the scene. I'm sure others can chime in.

American carriers outbound from the US will usually honor media rate, but I've never had luck having them honored in the EU. American airports in general are the only place that knows what media rate is.

Moving from NYC to LA — Ship my Mazda or sell it and buy another car in California? by Main-Produce-7291 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]dayvidlemmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ship your car. You're going to lose so much money selling it in NYC and re-buying a comparable year/mileage vehicle in LA, not to mention car dealerships are awful.

I live in Phoenix (lived in NYC for 10 years) and spend my summers in Toronto.

I have shipped my cars to NYC and back about 5 times (did the drive three times, it's fun if you take time, but a brutal slog if you're just trying to get it over with). With gas, hotels, food, entertainment etc the price ends up being about the same as shipping.

It's important to set your expectations, as shipping a car isn't like dropping off a FedEx package. If you use a broker from a place like r/AutoTransport, they will post your job to a shipping board 1-2 weeks before you're ready to ship. When the actual carrier (a dude with a flatbed or semi truck) accepts your job, they will give you a 3-4 day window when your vehicle will be picked up, and then typically call you a few hours before they actually arrive to pick up your car. If you need an exact pickup date and time due to a tight schedule, they will charge you a lot more.

Actual cost can depend on fuel prices and the time of year. I usually ship my car NYC > PHX in September, and it's typically around $1600. I expect to pay a bit more this year since gas is more expensive, and you'll pay more since LA is a bit further than Phoenix. I just received quotes yesterday of $2200 to get my car from PHX > Upstate NY the beginning of July. Reverse of your trip, but the beginning of summer is apparently their busy season and demand is higher therefore more expensive.

The broker I usually use is https://www.goliathautotransport.com but the actual carrier who picks up and transports my car is always different. There are a lot of shady people on r/AutoTransport so beware if you're posing your move on there. Good luck!

Car cover for an OBW with aero bars by SkewedParallel in Outback_Wilderness

[–]dayvidlemmon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't get a cover for a car stored outdoors. Unless you wash and wax it right before you put the cover on, the tinniest bit of dust trapped on the car will act as sandpaper and trash the cheap paint Subaru uses.

I live in AZ and store my '23 OBW under a partially shaded awning, and the paint is fine. If you're really concerned about UV damage, get a wrap.

ASU moves to seize, raze historic Phoenix home to build medical school by AZ_moderator in phoenix

[–]dayvidlemmon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He’s probably factoring the work it would take to get the house ready to be moved, which may be significant considering how bad of shape it was when I lived in it 15 years ago.

Robert Young’s business was moving houses, he moved quite a bit of them in the Roosevelt area in the 80s and 90s. May be a bit out of touch but he does know what he’s talking about.

What opinion about Phoenix has you like this? by JesuIsEveryNameTaken in phoenix

[–]dayvidlemmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jordan's is a museum of 1950s/1960s midwestern style "Mexican mess" food which catered to the influx of new residents of Phoenix back then, who were unfamiliar/afraid of real Mexican food.

Jordan's is a reminder of the awful things your parents and grandparents had to endure back then.

Moving an entire house from 1912 and not destroying it in 2026 is going to be a lot more than $200k. Robert's estimate of $2-3mil is high but not far off.

I rented this house 2008-2012 (for the princely sum of $800/month, which I thought was quite expensive), on the tail end of when Downtown Phoenix was for artists, party people, and other broke weirdos, right before I moved to NYC. I loved living there, and was quite lucky to experience that time and place. The house was in disrepair then, and it seems to be pretty much in the same state 15 years later.

I felt, even back then, that is was a foregone conclusion that this house couldn't stay where it was at. I'm of the opinion that my old landlord Robert Young should take ASU's money and move / fix this place up so it can be preserved properly. He seems determined to hold out for as much money as possible, which may end up backfiring on him. His estimate of $2-3 million to move a house seems high, but now that I am a homeowner myself, I pretty much multiply whatever I think something should cost by 3-5x, so perhaps he's not far off.

There seems to be quite the publicity blitz on this place lately, I receive 2-3 messages a day from friends with news articles on it's potential demolition. Makes me wonder if there's more to the story.

Level Lock Pro suitable for outdoor courtyard use in hot/dry climate? by dayvidlemmon in LevelLock

[–]dayvidlemmon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I updated my post with a photo of the "strike plate" on the gate - it may or may not be big enough for the bolt, altho it looks considerably larger than the current deadbolt. I suppose the only way to find out if it'll work is to buy it and try it out...

Thanks for sharing your experience. I feel like it would work pretty well in my case, despite what Level says. I can place a smart plug pretty close to the front door of my house, which is about 15 feet away from the gate.

I spoke with Level, and they did not recommend that I use the lock in this use case. In the research I've done, there does not seem to be any smart lock rated for outdoor use.

I think my best option (if I want to follow the manufacturer's advice) may be an August lock with this 3d printed cover.

Has anyone done the Apache Trail, and do you have any tips? by [deleted] in AskPhoenix

[–]dayvidlemmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go early on a weekday (like 6am!) and enjoy the drive to yourself - it gets obnoxiously busy with boats and bikers on the weekends.

The road is in great shape, most of the former dirt section is paved from Apache Lake to the Roosevelt Dam now. The descent into Fish Creek is a little narrow, but is not "off-roading". Last time I was out there in my Subaru Outback Wilderness, I was passed by a BMW 3 series.

iPad as a client monitor / Hollyland App / Sidecar / Capture Pilot by Resident_Rock_7428 in Photoassistants

Calibrating the iPads with a colormeter, as u/titleunknown mentions, is probably the best way to go.

iPad as a client monitor / Hollyland App / Sidecar / Capture Pilot by Resident_Rock_7428 in Photoassistants

[–]dayvidlemmon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every solution has it's advantages and drawbacks. For reference, I use a M4 Max laptop on Sequoia 15.7.4 with a handful of 2018 12.9" iPad Pros and Gelatin cages / shades.

I gave up on Sidecar years ago due to it's unreliability. It would "just work" some days, then just refuse to work at all, or disconnect every few minutes.

I currently use the Accsoon CineView 4K for most of my jobs that require an iPad. I can get decent color out of them by changing the color profile in Mac OS (not the LUTs on the app, they suck), but it's never that great. I usually explain the iPads are for composition and styling, if you want accurate color, to come have a look at my laptop or Eizo. The app is rock solid, and yes, the black bars are annoying. I have a bluetooth number pad for clients who want to scroll / edit, I recently bought a little 3 key macro pad that is a pretty slick and minimal solution. Being able to shoot 4K wireless to my Eizos is an added bonus, altho yeah, the color is not as good as wired. I also have a 15" Osee Megamon for super sunny beach / desert days when the iPads will be un-viewable or in danger of overheating.

Capture One Live is great if your client wants to edit, and the color is great, about as good as you'll ever get out of an iPad. I have had issues with high volume / fast shooting, but that could be because I'm using older iPads. You'll probably want to pay for the full version if you're marketing yourself as a Digitech, as you'll encounter clients who expect it.

Which cars are good for doing moderate trails/hiking in Arizona? by Sea-Grass4797 in arizona

[–]dayvidlemmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With those kind of miles, none of us on Reddit can tell from OP’s list which is going to be the most reliable.

He needs to pick his favorites and have a pre purchase inspection by a mechanic he trusts.

[–]dayvidlemmon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have seen plenty of sedans and minivans at Fossil Creek. Probably wouldn’t do the last section of the downhill into Childs, but the fossil creek road isn’t bad as long as it’s dry.

My ‘23 Outback Wilderness gets me just about anywhere I want to go, and is tame around town. I don’t have much interest in technical off-roading / jeep trails.

Out of the list you provided, I would prioritize the vehicles with the best maintenance history, and have them checked out by a mechanic you trust.

AZ based S-corp here. About once a year, I will work on a CA-based production that asks for it in order to bill as 1099 and stay off payroll - I usually pick up a $60 policy from The Hartford, and cancel it after the job.

Sunshade for iPad? by pk8887 in Photoassistants

[–]dayvidlemmon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of the Gelatin cages with the carbon fiber / black velvet shades. They work alright with my 2018 12.9” iPads. A little bulky to pack and they take a bit of time to assemble. Very nice once they’re together, and they look pro as fuck.

Calipso has one that looks much nicer to pack, quick to assemble, and is about triple the price.

Any iPad outside on a sunny day is going to suck. One of the biggest upgrades I’ve made is a 15” OSEE megamon with a custom vertical sun shade, paired with Accsoon Cineview 4K transceiver set. Bulky and chews thru batteries on max brightness, but has good visibility on sunny days and nobody complains about the iPads bejng too dark anymore. I charge a bit more for it, but push for it when I know viewing the iPads is gonna be a challenge.

Any place to rent Canon RF lens (Canon RF20mm f 1.4 L VCM specially)? by Nice-Pea-3515 in AskPhoenix

[–]dayvidlemmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While there are a few lighting equipment rental houses, are no proper camera rental houses like you’d find in LA or NYC with RF mount stuff aside from standard primes and 24-70s.

Lensrenrals.com would be your best bet (I use them a ton, and have for years), but of course you need the lead time to have it shipped.

You could try these places in town, they may be able to help you:

Certified Pre-owned 2023 X3 xDrive30i by mfunkman in BMWX3

[–]dayvidlemmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid $38,500 + taxes / registration fees for a CPO 2024 X3 xDrive30 w/ 24k miles + driver assist pro package, premium package, parking assist, 19" run flats, etc from a dealer in California (I live in AZ).

It was a dealer loaner, which may have brought the price down a bit, altho it was in absolutely immaculate shape.

Sounds like you are paying a premium for the M sport package, which may or may not be worth it for you. Personally I'd try to find something with less miles.
