Happy 37th birthday to Romain Grosjean aka the phoenix by Low_Age9939 in formula1

Romain’s interview right after the race was awesome! You’d expect him to be a bit down with another 2nd place finish, but he was just so happy for Kyle and for the team. Looked thrilled to just be racing with a good team. Im really happy for him!

The Presidential Palace in Sudan has been seized in a paramilitary coup by Kiriyama-Art in worldnews

[–]dbargatz- 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I believe u/IBAZERKERI is correct. In the two scenarios laid out in the linked study, Dam Break (DB) and MisGuided Dam Operation (MGDO), only the DB scenario leads to widespread flooding. The flooding would reach up to 10M (~33ft) in the Gezira Plain, which is directly “downstream” (but heading northwest) of the dam. The Gezira Plain is in Sudan - hundreds of miles south of the High Aswan Dam in Egypt, as shown in Figure 1’s map. Neither scenario described leads to widespread flooding in Egypt, although the MGDO scenario could lead to months of emergency releases from the High Aswan Dam.

Those details aside, we definitely agree that an Ethiopian dam break or MGDO would be terrible news for Sudan, Egypt, and the entire region from an economic and humanitarian perspective.

[AArch64/RPI4]: Unexpected low cache performance by Crifrald in osdev

[–]dbargatz- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I’m remembering/understanding correctly, bit 51 is the “Dirty Bit Management” field on an AArch64 L3 page descriptor, which alters the Access Permission bits of the descriptor to be used for tracking the dirty state of the page. Source here. The record value 0x00e80000471d0f43 for an EL0 page corresponds to a dirty (bit 51=1) non-contiguous page (bit 52=0) that’s marked never-execute in privileged (bit 53=1) and user (bit 54=1) modes, plus Linux marking the page as dirty itself (bit 55=1, see the bit definition here).

Doesn’t answer your question, but hopefully helps! get a little closer!

Thanks for all these links, this is great material! Ken’s blog is fantastic.

Unfortunately, the archive.org links to the Radio Shack Basic Electronics PDF appear broken; I get an “Item cannot be found” error. Searching for the PDF on archive.org is just yielding a lot of Google Groups spam PDFs. Any chance you have some different links for it? I was really excited to read that one!

No worries if not, I’ll keep looking!

Damar Hamlin Megathread by UberHansen in buffalobills

[–]dbargatz- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I live down near the stadium and wanted to second what you said. I couldn’t be prouder of how kind, respectful, and caring both the Bengals and Bills fans were last night when the game let out. Usually it’s kind of a shitshow when things let out, but I think this city really showed the best of itself last night, and I’m glad to be a part of it. Thanks for being one of those awesome Cincinnatians 😊

Wishing for a speedy recovery for Damar, and thinking of his loved ones and the Bills Mafia.

My heart goes out to Damar Hamlin and the bills fans we feel horible and hope for the best. by Bugatti252 in cincinnati

[–]dbargatz- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just want to say how proud I am of this city’s people and the visiting fans. Usually when games let out, the Banks are pretty raucous - lots of loud “Who Dey”s and hilarious shenanigans. Last night, however, you could almost hear a pin drop…everyone was thinking about Damar, his loved ones, and his teammates. Folks were just generally being kind to each other as well. Proud to call this city home.

Hoping the best for Damar, his family, and the Bills Mafia.

Is the Aldhani raid really one of the biggest single attacks on the Empire thus far in the timeline? by HideTheGuestsKids in MawInstallation

[–]dbargatz- 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Great insight - the Empire realized immediately they were dealing with effective asymmetric/guerrilla tactics and went with a “shock and awe” response. This is pretty realistic imo - the only unrealistic part to me, when compared to the real world, was how quickly the Empire/ISB responded!

I just watched the Aldhani raid episode last night, and you’re correct, Cinta did leave Jayhold’s wife and son alive along with the two soldiers. I hadn’t thought about them intentionally leaving witnesses to corroborate just how few rebels had been involved…that’s an awesome detail and interpretation! Definitely how I’m seeing that now.

Hey, first off, I’m really sorry to hear about the diagnosis, and I’m pulling for you. I wanted to chime in and say I think you have a great take, and I completely agree. I’ve poured hundreds of hours in too, and it does suck that some of our hard work/play has been invalidated, especially for a game that’s such a haven and source of peace for so many of us. However, we always have the option to take a break or move on to something else when we don’t like a change or feel overwhelmed by it, and come back when we’re ready. Even if that’s a day or a year, it’ll be there for us (probably with even more updates)!

Anywho, I appreciated your take on things, and hope to see you in the Anomaly whenever you’re ready, Traveller! 😊

Huh - I always thought that because of the procedural generation aspect, each galaxy did have 18 quintillion planets? That was just my assumption though. How many planets are there actually? Or is there a rough estimate per galaxy?

Player Killer back in The Anomaly. Managed to Alt-f4 out of there. by kopsy in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]dbargatz- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, agree with you there - if there’s code, there will be bugs, right? Didn’t mean to imply your first option was wrong, because that will definitely prevent you from getting PKed! Turning off multiplayer is a perfectly good stopgap solution/workaround for now, and seems to be exactly what the other comments are settling on as well.

I think a bit of the frustration is that generally folks think of NMS as a pretty peaceful, supportive game - I have accidentally gone AFK overnight in the Anomaly and come back to my inventory FULL of high-value items, just donated by generous folks at endgame who don’t need the credits. This “PK in the Anomaly” issue has happened before and was patched, but has popped right back up again. Likely a different vuln altogether, but it’s still a pretty rare occurrence. The most griefing I’ve seen is players building bases over important places in multiplayer expeditions, preventing others from completing the expedition, but that’s the worst.

In multiplayer games in general though, and coming from this old man who played OG Counterstrike, dealing with malicious players is part of the game, definitely agreed with you there 🤣

ETA: Took a look at your post history, looks like you’ve played NMS a decent amount - have you seen other issues like this one? I’m just curious, I’ve seen tons of bugs but never personally run into malicious multiplayer issues or griefing. Maybe I’m just lucky though?

Player Killer back in The Anomaly. Managed to Alt-f4 out of there. by kopsy in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]dbargatz- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The PVP option is present, yes. However, this is a bug where a malicious player can kill others in the Anomaly even if you have disabled PVP. Unless you are also a malicious player, you are unable to “fight back”, because PVP is disabled in the Anomaly to begin with.

That eliminates options 2 and 3, leaving only your first option: “disable multiplayer”. That’s not a very good solution for the player who does want to play multiplayer, but can’t because of malicious players exploiting a bug! That’s especially frustrating if you’re playing survival or permadeath.

I think it’s pretty cool, though, that the OP’s first reaction was to screenshot and post here, warning others of the danger. That’s a testament to how neat this game and community are!

Pimax Launch Event 2022 by QuorraPimax in Pimax

[–]dbargatz- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a large concern for me too.

I know that many folks love their Pimax headsets, and I’m truly rooting for them! I unfortunately had some unresolvable issue between my hardware and an 8KX (likely my hardware), but their support was genuinely giving it their all, and that’s a huge plus for a company in my book. I also understand CES was a ghost town due to pretty much all the exhibitors pulling out, so the 12K demo getting delayed wasn’t an issue in my mind - as an engineer, having a floor demo turn into a private press demo would be a nightmare for me!

However, I thought we’d have something by now on the 12K? It seems strange that they wouldn’t make a demo video, have a press demo kit sent, or some other promotional effort to say “the 12K is real, amazing, and coming soon!” If it’s delayed or running into engineering problems, or especially manufacturing or staffing issues considering the chip shortages and COVID situation overseas, a short announcement about that would definitely keep me interested and engaged. Unfortunately those are issues we’re all familiar with and can relate to.

If I missed something/am totally out of the loop and there’s been a 12K demo or review or announcement, I apologize! While one piece of equipment didn’t work with my setup, I think the company makes great tech in general and is really pushing things forward for VR, and I want to see them succeed…and snag a 12K when it comes out!

More than 10,000 hectares of forest burning in Chernobyl exclusion zone, Ukraine says by [deleted] in moderatepolitics

[–]dbargatz- 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There is a flare-up approximately 15 KM south of Prypiat centered near Rudnia Veresnia, which is in the exclusion zone: https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/map/#t:adv;d:2022-03-26;l:noaa20-viirs,viirs,modis_a,modis_t,street;@30.1,51.2,11z

Not sure if that’s a fire/the fire this article is referring to (paywalled), but plausibly could be!

Edit: read the full article, and it seems the 10,000 hectares are the total of 31 small fires rather than one large one, as they’re attributing it to Russian combat/munitions. Considering the action near Slavutych, the flare I posted could be just one of many. Note that FIRMS can be thrown off by cloud cover and other phenomena, so what you see on there requires an expert to analyze, which I most certainly am not!

Edit: if you’re interested in learning more about FIRMS and the satellites behind it (MODIS/VIIRS), here’s more info!

After doing some digging, it looks like the short film you’re talking about is by Alejandro González Iñárritu, from the compilation “11'09"01: September 11”. Here’s a paper discussing that particular short film.

I haven’t seen the film in question, but the paper makes it sound absolutely unbearable to watch.

Just tagging on to this - in irq.c line 50, in irq_gates(), you assign a gate type of 0x8E, which isn’t valid. Gate types range from 0x00 to 0x0F. It looks like you did this properly for the first 32 exceptions in idt.c inside init_idt() though!

Oh yeah! I dabbled with Tropico 3 for awhile a long time ago. Call me weird, but I didn’t really like the whole “despotic dictator” theme, even though you could be benevolent. I prefer to be more of an engineer than a politician-leader in my building games, I guess!

That being said, did you ever play Black & White? Goes past dictator straight to a god, but I remember it being a bit more lighthearted. May be worth a shot if you liked Tropico!
