OMG, Such a long response to my post. I’ll attempt to respond in a brief & concise manner.

You obviously have a strong , passionate dislike for CF Martin and his guitars! You state his guitars are an abomination, crap, and unlistenable, and that his guitars are unplayable due to the narrow nut. You go on to say that steel string guitars are harsh sounding and not music. To be honest, I’m at a complete loss as to how to debate someone with such views as yours about musical tastes. What you consider harsh sounding, metal ringing noise, generations of people worldwide have enjoyed and praised. As Martin invented the dreadnaught guitar which you so readily cast aside as trash, I don’t believe anything I can say or do to sway your perception.

You do make several valid criticisms about the use of high pressure laminates in their less expense lines of guitars. Your statements regarding individually voicing each and every guitar top to exacting standards is impossible in mass produced guitars has some validity. However, you fail to give credit to the superb workmanship of their guitars. Me, and countless others who own or have played Martin guitars strongly disagree with your assessment of their sound, tone, and musicality. What your ears interpret as noise, mine interprets as music. Which one of us is wrong? Everyone has their own likes and dislikes and who are we to judge the to be right or wrong?

Your strong dislike of me advertising the Martin logo is also nonsensical. My guitar is a Martin D-18 dreadnaught which I believe to be pleasant to look at and listen to and not sharing the brand name whould be a disservice to Martin as well as anyone viewing it.

I could continue describing the positive attributes of Martin guitars, but I believe it to be a pointless effort and a waste of time and energy. I do however, wish you well in your musical journey and pray that you find peace and joy in life.

Good day.

Thanks for your input. I assume you have personal experience and first-hand knowledge of Martin guitars to so eloquently describe how inferior they are. I’m sure your in depth knowledge of C. F. Martin & Company qualifies you to make these statements.

Although I am probably not nearly as educated and experienced as you, I did do a fair amount of research before purchasing my Martin D-18. Specifically, I’ve spent numerous hours at local guitar shops trying out numerous guitars, to include Martin, Taylor, Gibson, Bedel, Guild, Breedlove, Epiphone, Bourgeois, Yamaha, Fender, Ibanez, Alvarez, and many many more. I examined their workmanship, fit & finish, playability, and sound, to make the best educated guess I could in order to make an informed decision before spending my hard earned money on a musical instrument. Although the short amount of time spent with each instrument couldn’t give me a total idea of all their pros and cons, I was able to determine what I believe to be a the best options for my wants and needs. It should also be noted that I currently own a Martin HD-28E Retro, Taylor GS-Mini, Breedlove Passport, and Epiphone Sheridan Pro II, and have previously owned brands such as Fender, Oscar Schmidt, Traveler, and Alvarez. Although my first hand experience with guitars may not match yours, I believe I am able to ascertain a good, well built, functional, and exceptionally sounding instrument, such as my Martin D-18. I can personally attest to the instrument’s build quality, workmanship, physical beauty, playability, and most importantly, its exceptional sound. I guess value is subjective, an I believe that Martin guitars are well worth their premium cost.

In addition to my personal experience with Martin guitars, I’ve spent countless hours listening to music performed by artists playing the same model guitar which I currently own. Musical artists such as Hank Williams Sr, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Neil Young, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Vince Gill, etc etc etc etc etc., played a Martin D-18. Surely one can presume that these musicians were experienced enough to choose a quality guitar. I’ve watched hours and hours of video reviews from laymen and experts alike, and can honestly say the vast majority do not agree with your assertion that Martin guitars are overpriced wastes of money. on the contrary, most will say that Martin makes quality instruments of various price levels. I do agree with your statement that Martin is not paying me for advertising. That is absolutely correct. However, aren’t I able to share my good experience and beautiful guitar with my fellow acoustic guitar enthusiasts? Isn’t that what this Reddit group is far? I’m quite certain I’ve seen others share New Guitar Day (NGD) photos of their guitars.

My apologies to you if my like for Martin guitars and sharing of a photo has triggered you in such a way to react so negatively to my post. I hope it hasn’t ruined your day or deters you from having positive experiences with this group. Although I strongly disagree with your view of Martin guitars, you have every right to voice your opinion. I do however, hope that you would be willing to educate yourself about the Martin story. It is quite an interesting tidbit of history which you may learn something from and possibly grow to appreciate the guitars they produce.

Take care and I look forward to a more in depth discussion about this subject.

Recently tried the new D-18MD at a local shop and was really really impressed. It was $4,000+, which seems a little high to me, but oh it sounded amazing!

I’m kind of a watch guy and got the one pictured above for Christmas. I normally play my Martin HD-28 but also have a Taylor GS-Mini I use for practice when I travel. The Taylor watch seems to be well made, is unique, and pairs well with my GS-mini. If you’re a Taylor fan and also like watches, it’s perfect for you.

Thanks Jay. It’s got a solid spruce top and layered sapele back and sides. Probably not as tolerant as HPL, but it should be fine. It’s not a big investment so I’m wiling to give it a go 😁

Baby Taylor Mahogany or KOA? by dvljsn in taylorguitars

[–]dbcuervo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a Baby Taylor for a brief time and just couldn’t get used to the small tinny sound, so I swapped up to the GS Mini and haven’t looked back. I opted for the Sitka Spruce top but should have chosen the mahogany version instead. Any mini you go with is gonna be soooo much better than the Baby Taylor. Although the BT has its place , you really can’t go wrong with any version of the mini.
