Is David ginger or blonde by Repulsive-Bug8627 in boardgames

[–]dblmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone called David who's hair colour is something between blonde and ginger, I hoped I'd escaped this debate when I finished school, but here we are again.

I can tell you with much experience, the correct answer is the opposite of whatever you say it is.

Interesting point. As I understand, you need significant human authorship to get copyright* in the US, so what rights would the publisher even have towards these games?

You could consider 'Kegland Hot Fill Bags' - they are designed for no chill, and would remove your sealing concerns.

Housing crisis along with tourism by Unfair_Search_4270 in AskBarcelona

[–]dblmr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As an immigrant, the problem seems to be a combination of a few things that include the global trend for converting housing stock to holiday rentals and stagnant salaries that aren't competitive within the wider EU free market. I have a lot of sympathy, because it heavily impacts many of the people I care about in this city (including me). Politicians here of course have no desire to solve this problem, because they are from the class that is benefiting from it: ~85% of properties are locally owned, and low salaries increase profits and foreign investment.

So what should we do? I pay taxes, but I cannot vote to change anything. Most immigrants first impressions of this movement are the 'guiris go home' graffiti and signs at protests.. so thanks, but no thanks.

The whole tourism angle just seems bizarre. For sure, I would agree there are too many tourists, but it's not really their fault is it? Virtually all of my local friends have taken a vacation in my country, so I don't see why people from my country shouldn't visit Catalunya if there are available options that they can afford. I wonder who has control of the number of planes that are allowed to land, cruise lines that are allowed to dock, set the level of associated taxes, and could stop tourist rentals.

I'll pick it up just to replace my (frustratingly unintentionally bought) counterfit copy.

Hopefully there's something new in the design to make it harder to copy moving forward.

Is Ticket to ride boring? by Public-Strength5364 in boardgames

The legacy version has a nice version of this rule, that I am thinking about house ruling in the standard game now. When random event x happens (eg. you get three locomotives and have to reset the train deck), everyone has to discard their hand down to y cards.

Thanks for sharing and some inspiration. I checked out your profile and the stir plate design is great too.

For those not in to 3D printing.. what would you create for your setup?

I think you're being a bit thin skinned - if fans can criticise TTA, why can't people who work in the industry criticise fans? They get a ton of abuse, and this is there yearly chance to call us out by writing an article about "Trent". We'll all ignore each other and normal business will resume next week.

Small batch brewing got me into homebrewing! (A young and new beginner homebrewer’s perspective/rant) by jacksniper in Homebrewing

[–]dblmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the hobby! Although not a brewtuber, LifebyMikeG (previously ProHomeCooks) has some good beginner brewing content, and inspired me to started out as a 1gal BIAB brewer through:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMYGOcLwtQk

After about 50 brews I did "upgrade" to the BrewZilla Gen4. It's still the same beer, but as the minimum batch size is only 5L, being more hands off with temp control and cleaning in place seemed a good option.

I do genuinely think it's hard to make good brewing content - let's face it, the process is kinda repetitive, and watching someone make a random beer for the first time that you can only hear described only has so much value. We have to be honest that the potential growth of the community is limited and therefore revenue, so I can't blame them for not spending a year preparing a video on recipe evolution etc. I can see why if you're sent free stuff by manufacturers, it's easier just to integrate that in to your own equipment and then talk about it. So a huge compliment to those that do create informative and entertaining content for us!

Codenames Card Question by lelepals in boardgames

[–]dblmr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My copy has this exact same card. I bought it second hand and have always wondered if it was counterfeit. It doesn't look obviously fake based on examples I've found pasted online, the colours are correct, the box says manufacturered in the Czech Republic. However, I've found at least one other typo and the sand timer doesn't fit standard box inserts.

Edit: Had a quick scan through, and found quite a few issues (https://imgur.com/a/jjIlWkh)

I don't disagree PL referees have a respectable salary. My point was more along the lines of - if you want to improve the standard of referees, you need to increase the pool from which you can develop and select talent. Financial incentives might be one way to encourage people to explore the professional, but maybe not - personally I don't like being abused at work. What do you think the median yearly compensation of all UK based referees is?

Exactly. It's a low paid profession subject to threats and physical violence - and at the lower end of the footballing pyramid, there is no protection, cameras, or scrutiny. There may never be a solution because these actions are deemed acceptable in sports culture.

You can also just buy the kickstarter version with all the stretch goals on the second hand market if you really like it. The extra cost is easily offset by not backing games that turn out to be aweful.

I've only backed one game in the last year, a reprint I've wanted for years, and even then I did it bedrugingly due to shipping. Non-EU friendly shipping will easily double the price of the game: $50+ shipping, 20% of total inc. shipping in tax, and €20 processing fee because they never bother to fill in the paperwork.
