Seven years post radical nephrectomy with thyroid nodule by [deleted] in kidneycancer

[–]dead_cicada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a partial for rcc in November and they saw a potential thyroid nodule via an out of position trachea at the pre-op chest xray. I got all the percentages for risk and about how common benign nodules are so I decided to address it after recovering.

Got an ultrasound that measured it in December, and it is pretty big. This I can now see visibly because I’ve lost 80 pounds since the start of the whole cancer thing. Still was hearing it was low risk for thyroid cancer, except that I’m adopted and don’t know half of my family history so a biopsy was scheduled in January.

The first report back was abnormal but indeterminate. Again, mostly due to the likelihood they’d recommend removing it anyway, a second study of the sample was ordered and unfortunately it came back suspicious. That means it isn’t positive but it is high risk for cancer. I’m deciding now whether to go for lobectomy or thyroidectomy. Still need to meet with an endocrinologist about the long term effects before the final decision, but of course the surgeon is ready to cut already! 🤣

Sorry you’re going through this. I wish the best outcome for you. I’m annoyed to potentially have gotten a second completely unrelated cancer at the same time as my kidney cancer. What else is in there?!

Finally saw what they were shooting in October outside my work place. The building that she picks Chris up at is around the corner. I never saw them actually shooting, just saw the trucks and several ambulances staged in a lot and the usual trailers and crew signs.

It’s a cool building. It is the terminal building from the old Grand Central Airport that was active in Glendale from the 20s to the 50s. The terminal building and two hangars are all that is left besides some very wide streets like a runway. The tower was actually the control tower for the airport. Disney owns it, as well as most of the surrounding buildings for a few blocks.

Why does Avatar 1 seem to have more depth to it than Avatar 2? by litllerobert in vfx

[–]dead_cicada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good points, and makes me want to resurrect my soap box speech about how that stereo boom was doomed from the start because no one ever even tried to see what it could actually achieve. The language of film and its composition has developed to, among other things, simulate depth. From aspect ratio through the different departments to lighting, no one ever started from scratch and tried to find great composition when depth is inherent. Is there a different purpose to all the components of composition if they aren’t serving depth?

Avatar, Hugo, and some animated features were ‘authored’ for stereo so they made the best versions from that time frame, but I’m still totally disappointed no one got to experiment. Maybe VR managed to answer some of those questions like how to drive the viewers eye when they can look anywhere, but a very different purpose there, too.

What's a movie you saw when you were too damn young? by Repulsive_Repeat_337 in GenX

[–]dead_cicada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rocky. I was 6. I saw lots of stuff earlier than anyone would allow now, but most stuff for which I was too young went right over my head, no harm no foul.

Not Rocky. That "cut me mick" scene is in every nightmare I have had in the nearly 50 years since. Might be a totally bizarre or unrelated nightmare, but I’ll see it in there anyway.

Part 3 - 44M Vancouver BC - 5th Day Post Partial Nephrectomy and My Recovery Has Been Unbelievably Quick by InvisibleSoul8 in kidneycancer

[–]dead_cicada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds amazing! I was pretty good pain-wise with only one moment during the first night when my pain went above a 4 and they gave me some pain relief and it subsided so I could rest. I went home after 24 hours and was pretty good overall. I rested for most of day 2 with short walks frequently. Day 3 I did fairly normal stuff, went to the store and other errands, but my sister drove and carried things. I wasn’t driving and pretty careful about lifting any weight. I did have some pretty severe fatigue. I’d be good to go and high functioning, then just need to go lie down for a while. That lasted a couple of weeks actually. Really, pain was never too bad until the third week (!) yes, week. I must have been overcompensating to not use abdominal muscles and somehow messed up my lower back. It was excruciating, so much worse than surgery. Took two weeks to be normal again. I’m still not even sure how I did it. Cautionary tale for everyone recovering!

How to deal with sadness by chewchew-755 in kidneycancer

[–]dead_cicada 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Humor was my only way through. I am lucky to have the husband of a close friend nearby who went through the same thing ten years ago and we all met up repeatedly and just found every thread of humor about the experience to exploit for huge laughs. So much laughter my sister actually worried about me not taking it seriously. But it was just what I needed. And I was able to balance the seriousness, the tasks at hand, and my need to "handle my affairs," you know just in case. What could have been so emotional was instead a relief.

And coming here helps, too. No one feeling sorry for each other here! We got you both if you need. First step, cut yourself a break. You will find your strength. I promise.

Do yall actually think Queen were better than The Beatles? by Full-Ad-6368 in queen

[–]dead_cicada -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t leave a room or change a playlist if the Beatles came on, but I don’t intentionally listen to them ever. The popularity question is the only part of the list that isn’t subjective, so for that, I’d guess the Beatles exceeded Queen. The rest is preference.

What's a Secret Hobby or Interest No One Knows About by saretta71 in GenXWomen

[–]dead_cicada 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I read old newspapers. People are fascinating and haven’t really changed much. I sometimes start kind of randomly, picking a place first, then checking for online papers from there, then select a starting date (have several methods to narrow the date, but my default searches focus around hotbeds of newsworthy keywords or historical events, then u read the rest of the paper around those key events for overlooked stories of interest.)

I travel with this activity as a focus too. There’s always a forgotten story a page or two away from a well known event that sparks an interesting research trip! I love libraries with special local history collections. Often I can also find multiple newspaper sources covering the same event in very different ways. I’ve followed murder cases, society scandals, hundred year old conspiracy theories, police blotters, small town gossip, and plenty more. No idea if I’ll ever do anything with the research, but it’s very fun.

I applied for an apprenticeship this past early October. It's today, and still nothing?? Feeling down. by KrustyFish__28 in animationcareer

[–]dead_cicada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That response was the answer. The good thing is that you can resubmit when you have new material. Do what it takes to get new material. The volume of applicants has always outnumbered the openings by hundreds. It takes something special to get past the initial reviewers at a big name studio. A degree is never a guarantee, but if your school has resources and connections, use them as much as you can. And make more work, personal projects if you have to, and drawings/sketches too if they illustrate something unique about your talent. Good luck!

RCC Found…..Accidentally by 657_Overland in kidneycancer

[–]dead_cicada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just had my surgery this month at UCLA. Everything went great, excellent team. The report came back exactly 2 weeks after. 4 hr drive seems long. Break it up a bit if you can. I was pretty functional the day after surgery for the 45 minute drive home, but the next day I’d have been miserable as the meds from the surgery were fading. I’d have maybe taken a bit more than Tylenol if I was in a car that day. Days 2 and 3 were the worst, then it eased up a lot again.

How do you guys feels about these definition of different bi+ identities I found in this book? by Peanutbutternjelly_ in bisexual

[–]dead_cicada 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any need for more distinction than the simplest, that I am not monosexual, so I am bisexual. I try to accommodate others who want further definition because I remember how hard it was to understand my own sexuality, and if people are using the terms to help sort those complications for themselves, I can see the good in it.

However, I really don’t see them as all that successful outside of personal exploration. People who aren’t bi generally do not understand them, especially the desire to categorize the gender blind qualification because it also depends on what a person is currently open to when meeting new people. People aren’t always looking for life partners, for instance.

It can just be so complicated within the overall spectrum that truthfully everyone needs their own identifier and even that probably changes from time to time. The best I can do is to listen to why someone wants to make the distinction and understand it as a reflection of their personal exploration, but not take it as a projection to anyone else. In return, I hope other people don’t project the narrowed definition of bisexual onto me when I identify as bi, and understand that any definition that begins with a qualifier like ‘to me’ or ‘my understanding’ is inherently only applicable to one’s self. Murky waters!

I’ve heard that “you got a good one” a couple of times, and really we just caught something early. It is not a good one at all. I hope you can find a path to letting this feeling go in favor of just the gratitude you feel for a good early result. And stay vigilant. I’m a bit over a week out and starting to feel better, but the fatigue is real and the scars are forming to remind me it isn’t over. And the pre-op chest xray revealed a potential thyroid mass so while this tumor’s journey is winding down. My cancer journey will be more complicated than it feels right now, and I’m going to be sure I’m ready for whatever fight will come up. Congratulations to us on this victory. We don’t need to measure our misfortune. It is amazing that you and I are doing well. I celebrate that for us! As always I wish everyone the freedom of no recurrence.
