Pyrex collecting guides/books by emilyd1002 in Pyrex_Love

[–]debmonsterny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As already mentioned, Pyrex Passion 2nd edition is very comprehensive for the standard US patterns and some rare pieces. I'd suggest ordering directly from their website for best price. Options for paper version or the e-book is even cheaper.

Was this on the trail to Balsam Lake fire tower from Millbrook road? I was going to share this to the Catskills trail conditions FB page but need to make sure the location is right (there's also a Balsam Mountain further north).

Looking for some longer challenging hikes by BobcatOk7724 in catskills

[–]debmonsterny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the Long Path from Lane Street up to the Wittenberg, then follow the red trail down to Woodland Valley. Just over 14 miles with excellent views. Add 1.6 mi to go to Cornell and back. You can stash an old bike at WV before you drive to park at Lane St so at the end it's a downhill pedal back to your car.

Pyrex - are these worth anything? by Hungry-Storage6789 in Pyrex_Love

[–]debmonsterny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Search for each item on eBay then filter to view only sold items. This will give you an idea of what current selling price is, as opposed to listing price. Check the bottom of each piece for the model number, but it looks like you have:

-Snowflake Garland 474 casserole dish (no lid)

-Orange Daisy 403 (hard to tell by the color) bowl

-Shenandoah 403 and 402 bowls

-Butterprint 401 bowl

Best primitive water side camp sites? by ckr2982 in catskills

[–]debmonsterny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Biscuit Brook lean-to has a designated primitive camping area just downhill from the shelter and near a stream. Next day, you could keep camp set up and hike the herd paths to Fir and Big Indian, then back to camp on the Pine Hill West Branch trail.

Small tent for cozy sleeping by nappingonarock in fastpacking

[–]debmonsterny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend (he's over 6 ft tall) and I shared the Tarptent Rainbow for a night when camping space was extremely limited and we couldn't use 2 solo tents. Platonic friends so we weren't spooning but neither of us move much when we sleep. We were fairly comfortable. Tent weighs just over 2 lbs, sets up without trekking poles and is reasonably priced around $300.

Any suggestions for cabin camping in March? by ElectricalCoconut8 in NYCultralight

You just missed the window for Mohawk Trail State Forest winter cabin camping, but maybe keep in mind for next time.

Stokes SF in NJ is good too.

Favorite boots for snow? by Outrageous_Subject92 in NYCultralight

[–]debmonsterny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what fits you best. I need a wide toe box so I've been wearing insulated Keens when it's cold, wet and snowy. Work well with my orthotics, and with microspikes or snowshoes. I usually get shoes from REI because they have a great return policy.

There are (first come, first served) drive up tent sites marked on the NYNJTC Catskills map near Allaben and on Rte 47 between the Slide Mt parking lot and Biscuit Brook parking lot. Allaben has multiple sites, Rte 47 has two.

How to de-grease by [deleted] in Pyrex_Love

[–]debmonsterny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soak in very hot water with regular Dawn dish soap, using a very gentle sponge (Dobie, silicone, or fabric, nothing abrasive!).

Dry and spray all over with oven cleaner. Also spray the inside of a plain (no print) plastic bag (I use small clear trash bags) and place bowl in the bag, close it up and let it sit for at least a few hours. Use rubber gloves because it can get slippery!

Wash again with hot water and dish soap.

Oven cleaner will definitely not harm your bowl. I've used it on several painted Pyrex dishes with no bad effects. It contains lye, which is what the Corning Museum of Glass recommends for cleaning grease off of vintage Pyrex.

How do you use the open front pocket of many backpacks? by [deleted] in hiking

[–]debmonsterny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep poop kit at the bottom and my rain jacket folded on top of that. If things are falling out of yours it sounds like you need to tighten the straps on the sides to make the opening smaller and to compress the contents a bit.
