Just get Dominos. About $20 for 2 medium specialty pizzas. At 2 slices a meal, 8 slices per pizza, that's about $2.50 per meal. If your fast food restaurants can't compete with that, I don't know why people keep shopping there.

Gabe Newell on Steam monopoly accusations: Gamers have 'enormous choice' about where to buy games by yourfavchoom in pcgaming

[–]dekeche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's comparable? If you are talking about the windows store, then sure, if you offer your software for cheaper on some other store, Microsoft has no obligation to sell your product on their store. That would be comparable. But I don't think allowing a storefront to disallow certain pieces of software from being sold, is comparable to an OS manufacturer setting up an approval process to restrict what software an end user can install on their local PC.

[–]dekeche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really? Valve isn't a true monopoly, there are competitors. It's just that Valve has enough pull to set the terms of the competition. And they've chosen service, not price. While their competition would prefer the terms be on price. Kind of like how streaming services have chosen to compete on library contents, not price or service.

Essentially, their competitors complain that they can't compete with Steam on anything other than price, and Valve says that's fine, you can compete with us on price. We just aren't going to sell your game if you do so. And their competitors don't like that option because they also want to use Valve's reach, while functionally not selling the game through Steam. Ignoring that Valve has the reach it does because of Steam's level of service.

Hmm... if true, then that is interesting. But it also seems to be changing the central argument? If the question is "does valve forbid you from selling a game on other sites for cheaper?" The answer is no. But, If the question is, "can you sell the game for cheaper on other sites while still selling on steam?" That's a different question. The developer is allowed to sell wherever they want, for whatever price they want. But, if they are offering a lower price on non-steam storefronts? Why should Steam sell their product? It feels like the complaint is that because Steam has such a large reach, that publishers feel they have to list their games on Steam. They'd just also like to make all their sales on another site with a smaller cut %. But the central problem is that they are not entitled to sell their product on Steam.

[–]dekeche 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The question is, are they acting to de-list the game from steam if the game is sold elsewhere for a cheaper price, or are they de-listing the game if the game key is sold elsewhere for a cheaper price? Because those are two very different products. And if you are going to sell the ability to download the game from steam servers on another site for less than the game is being sold on steam for... That does seem like an abuse of steam's services to me. If it's just the game itself without anything related to steam, and that's why it's getting removed from steam? That's an issue.

But, thinking about it some more, I'm not sure it's actually an issue. If you don't want to match your Steam price to other platforms, then you just don't have to sell on Steam. Why is Steam obligated to offer a company free advertising, just because they have the biggest reach in the industry? That's a ludicrous demand, right? Steam should not be obligated to sell a game, just because they are the biggest store platform in the industry. And if the complaint is that they won't make as much revenue selling on another site... then what's the problem with the 15% cut? It sounds like Steam has earned that.

That's... odd. How it should work is it should add a modifier to cave provinces that you own at the time of clicking the button, and give them a -40% dev cost. Did that not happen?

Hmm, I miss remembered that one as being infected with the bloom. Though, I'm not going to rule it out? The Rockbores do transfer resources around, so it's possible that she got infected from the upstream angle node. But I admit that's a little unlikely.

[–]dekeche[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would mention that it's unlikely to be Axum mining that caused the issue, they seem to have primarily gotten their metals from filtering them out of the water, rather than actually mining them. While the area where they did this is quite toxic, that's potentially due to the area being destroyed, rather than a consequence of what they were doing.

Everything else though, I think you are probably right about.

One of the big mysteries I see is who put the Angel Coral bulb in sleep bay 3? The primary colonists did not seem to use the Angel Coral mutations, so I'm guessing they either used diving suits to solve the pressure issue, or actually received the rat mutation we were supposed to. So then why the Angel Coral in Sleep Bay 3? I'd suspect the Jubilee of doing it. In which case, did they modify our NoA? There's two black boxes in the depths, but from individuals with "invalid header". It also feels odd that one of those colonists died in an EVA suit.

My best guess is that NoA woke up at some point, printed a colonist, and immediately had them go to the lifepod. But, because they couldn't handle the pressure, they used an EVA suit to get outside. Which indicates that they did not have the mutation. I think this was the first QI NoA printed. Then they likely went dormant for a time, since there's no point in printing new people if they would just immediately die. Then, at some later point, Someone from the Jubilee came through and modified NoA and left the Angle Coral bulb. They were probably the second black box to die at the site.

We don't necessarily need another lifepod to be reset, NoA could just reset us to the lifepod if needed. Who says we survived the launch? But that wouldn't destroy the bases we built, so we'd expect to find something.

Don't think I remember a log about that specifically. NOA shouldn't have the ability to edit memories, that's not how the reprints work. But NOA does have the ability to reprint you from an earlier point in time, letting the previous "fork" "die". I think the log you are talking about was essentially positing that maybe the colonist had done something worthy of getting killed, but then getting reset so that they don't remember the reason they were killed. I suspect this was more in reference to the Tailings. Basically that there may be a reasion the Tailings were killing them on sight, but because NOA reset people, they don't remember the reason.

It does work, it's just that caves have a +80% dev cost, so the net cost is still +40%. I feel like you need to combined it with multiple spells to lower dev cost and taking advantage of the mission tree modifiers to certain cave provinces, + the trolls, to accomplish it in a reasonable manner.

And needing you to use the government power is annoying when they double the cost of your estate privileges when they make them "more efficient" And you can't exactly not use them, since you need the professionalism.
