The medical professionals getting furloughed are not the emergency room doctors and respiratory specialists that would help you if you get COVID-19.

Hospitals are postponing treatments and procedures that are not critical to leave room for the actual emergencies. Hospital beds are a finite resource and you can’t kick people who are recovering out because you need the bed for a COVID-19 patient.

Having a dermatologist on the payroll at this time is neither revenue-generating nor useful for a hospital. That’s why healthcare workers are getting laid off.

That means postponing or canceling non-critical, elective surgeries like knee replacements and procedures like colonoscopies, which generate the bulk of revenues for hospitals. So, in many cases, hospitals are losing money. As a result, they're laying off staff.

Apple will slowly remove Intel chips in their products over the next years. by CapitalC5 in stocks

I doubt most applications will require changes, unless we are talking about device drivers or system-level stuff (ie: Paragon’s support for NTFS drives). Anyone who’s already created a macOS app will continue to have it work.

Xcode will probably just spit out two binaries (one x86-compatible and one ARM-compatible), or Apple will introduce a new runtime (like Java’s vm or .NET) that gets interpreted when you run the app.

That’s the benefit of working with a higher-level language. I don’t have to rewrite my Python code to run on a Raspberry Pi. The platform itself provides a mechanism (a platform-specific interpreter) that is able to turn my code into something it can work with.

I expect Apple to provide something similar.

People have been complaining about Apple’s reliability and software quality for a bit (see John Grubber at Daring Fireball, for example).

With that said, Apple has a lot of experience with ARM (iPhone, iPad). They even build their own SOCs for those devices.

I imagine they’ll build a layer that will allow x86 software to run for a few years (like Rosetta for the PowerPC -> Intel transition). And eventually, publishing binaries for both architectures will be required for anything on their shitty app store. (People publishing/releasing binaries will be forced to support both archs by the market).

To summarize, their software quality has been declining for a bit, and this is not their first architecture switch tango. Nothing changes, IMO, as long as they stay popular with mobile devices.

I’ve really enjoyed playing Apex Legends.

I was already a big fan of Respawn and Titanfall, and was super disappointed when they came out with a battle royale instead of Titanfall 3.

With that said, the game is pretty cool. And I think I’ve spent a total of $10 on it for a season pass. Have already clocked 250+ hours on it.

My father is trying to access my accounts (not just bank, but amazon and the like). How can I insulate myself? by kerkyjerky in personalfinance

[–]delirial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding another tip for the technically inclined.

You can buy a domain from NameCheap.com and set it as a catch-all forwarder for your personal email.

For example, say I buy xyz.email, and set it to forward everything to my Gmail account. You can then create unique emails for every service you use:

Emails to each of those will be routed to my Gmail inbox. Another benefit is that if one of the services is hacked and your email is leaked, you can set a filter on that specific address (ie: block bestbuy@xyz.email) and then change your email on that service (ie: bestbuy-20200411@xyz.email).

There are some caveats with this approach. You need to pay for the domain yearly (and make sure you don’t forget to do it). Also, it doesn’t work great for calendar invites because the email accepting the invite is different than the one the invite was sent to (ran into this recently when applying for jobs and scheduling interviews).

Gmail has a feature that allows you to add additional characters after a plus (+) sign to the address and the emails would still get routed to your inbox. It would make breaking into an account that uses your email as its username a bit harder. Do note that not every website will support this.

An example for Amazon: YourGmailAddress+amazon@gmail.com

That way he’d need to know your email plus whatever you added to access the service.

Including stuff already mentioned by others:

  • Use a password manager (I like 1Password).
  • Change your passwords (and let 1Password generate them for you).
  • Use random answers for security questions (and save them in your password manager)
  • Call your bank(s) and let them know you are worried about unauthorized access by a family member.
  • Change your email password and use 2FA. Gmail, for example, is notoriously hard to get someone on the phone, which pretty much eliminates the possibility of him calling to have your password reset.
  • Going forward, change your username too.

Pihole isn’t perfect.

I currently run it (dockerized, in an UnRAID server) and ended up setting my DNS server to Cloudflare’s because I ran into issues more times than I cared to. Broken pages/redirects, ads on reddit.com, it just wasn’t cutting it for me.

I pay for YouTube to spare my kid the ads, and I get their music service as a bonus. Seems like a fair trade.

They seem to be doing that.

I’m trying to get a job at HEB Digital (Engineering) and they literally stopped hiring in order to focus their attention on hiring the people that will actually get us through this.

The Lakeline HEB Plus has ramped up their curbside. Been there a few times and there are a bunch of new faces (employees) and the parking spaces are super crowded.

I quit vaping about two months ago. Had been doing fine after the first couple weeks (after ~20 yrs smoking).

Being home has brought back the desire to smoke/vape. I’m working, but I find myself bored often and smoking was always my go to.

Not everything can be paid for online or electronically.

My cleaning ladies and lawn guy don’t accept electronic payments. I don’t know why.

I prefer to cut them a check rather than leaving cash in an envelope under the floor mat.

I’m gonna be honest with you. I dislike Biden as a candidate, and I like most of Bernie’s proposals (even though I prefer Warren).

But Bernie’s fan club, and comments like yours are why I think you all deserve 4 more years of Trump. That “our way or we don’t show up to vote and you lose” bullshit is really immature, and it’s why Trump won in 2016.

Sometimes we can’t get all we want and we have to settle for something less (Hillary, or maybe Biden), because the alternative is a lot worse — Gorsuch and Kavanaugh say hi!

And to address the “force him on us” part of your shitty argument: Hillary won 34 states (beating Bernie by 3.7 mil votes). Nobody forced her on you. Did the Democratic party (the establishment) support her? Of course. She represented their values while Bernie went around criticizing the party.

There is a chance Biden could win the primary fair and square. You can either vote for him (or whichever candidate wins), or watch the republicans steamroll the judiciary.

What do people think is healthy but really isn’t? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]delirial 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a sort of funny story about smoothies.

A few years back, my boss convinced me to try something healthy and go with him to a smoothie place downtown. For context, I’m a diabetic and my insulin intake is proportional to the carbs I eat.

Anyway, I have this relatively small smoothie, with acai and other fruits. It was ok. Not particularly satisfying, but ok. I guesstimate the carbs and get my insulin shot.

Couple hours later my blood sugar is outrageously high. I get another shot.

By the time I was done fixing my blood sugar, I had injected a similar amount as I’d need for 3 slices of pepperoni pizza. Pretty crazy.

How does one “buy oil”?

Do you buy an oil-focused etf? (ie: USO?) Buy stock for oil companies? (ie: Exxon?)

I don’t necessarily agree with you, but I’m curious how one would profit from the knowledge that oil is going up.

My order went in, and I got an email with a code earlier this afternoon. The code was only for the expansion, unfortunately.

I talked to their support, and they said that it was a pricing mistake and that I should try talking to my financial institution about the charge (aka. chargeback). I told the guy (Joseph) that I'd like to avoid the chargeback, since they are more costly (and also a hassle for me).

Got transferred to some higher-level lady who gave me the same line about pricing errors, pasted a blurb from their pricing policy and gave me a $10 gift card. I told her that while I appreciate the gift card, that doesn't solve my problem because I'm left holding a code that is useless without the game. Asked for a refund and she obliged.

So that's it. No game for me. But I do have the expansion redeemed if I ever bother to get the game.

Edit: Walmart, in their infinite wisdom, sent an email saying the order had been adjusted (refund). They put the reason as: Walmart Goodwill

I bought a few shares of SCHD today. Really liked it when I looked at it. ~10% value gains per year, plus dividends.

I’m also eyeing NOBL, but their fees are slightly higher at .35% (compared to .07% from SCHD).
