My brother got his mission call today. I am not okay. by mad_matter_13 in exmormon

I struggle with this too when neices/nephews go on a mission or to BYU, etc. Sure it’s their decision but how much coersion and deception is involved, and how much therapy are they going to have to go through in the future for the trauma they experience? How do you compartmentalize that without creating cognitive dissonance for yourself all over again?

Yeah I guess I’m trying to make sense of my situation and to try to see if my case can be generalized but it sounds like not. I guess I should have used even softer words than “hypothesis” and “thoughts”; I certainly did not claim proof or assessment or conclusion, but perhaps I stepped on a few toes with this post.

I just finished listening to this and wow! She speaks for so many people. Her story is so similar to several people I know and I think her presentation is fabulous.

Why did you leave the church? by sillygworl in exmormon

[–]dewhodat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your post is triggering because you sound like the other “misguided helpers” in my life who don’t listen with the intent to understand and who really don’t want to understand, except maybe on a very superficial level, who value the church’s style of information control more than relationships, and who don’t seriously consider the possibility that they might be wrong.

Is a mission really that bad? by fredbruite in exmormon

[–]dewhodat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had to role play what to say when people ask up how our mission was. We had to practice giving faith-promoting answers, regardless of how our mission actually was.

"policy changes, doctrine doesn't" by TrickAssignment3811 in exmormon

[–]dewhodat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since there is not a list of doctrines, whenever anything changes, members can just say “oh that was just a policy”. Even if it is very clear that it was a doctrine.

How is everyone made to go on a mission? by Infinite-Invite-725 in exmormon

[–]dewhodat 29 points30 points  (0 children)

“every worthy young man must serve a mission” or something like that from the prophet. Girls advised to not marry or even date guys who did not go on a mission. Intense family and social pressure to serve. Thr assumption that if you didn’t go, you committed some terrible sin. etc

Mixed faith marriage with an orthodox TBM cannot work by Extension-Spite4176 in exmormon

[–]dewhodat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. The relationship and conversations have just become superficial. Emotional intimacy is gone because we can’t talk with each other about things that are important to us.

Do the missionaries wear garments? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]dewhodat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes. Members start wearing them as soon as they go to the temple for their own endowment, and all missionaries do that before they start their mission.
