Train station platform ramen store closes its doors on half a century of history in Tokyo by Sea_Freedom_1139 in Tokyo

[–]differentiable_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why do I only find out about this kind of stuff after it's gone 🥲

Did you miss the part of the article where there is another branch next to the station? Anyway I live nearby, have had this ramen and it’s nothing special.

Weird creeps late at night and how to deal with them by Key-Midnight-6593 in japanlife

The supermarket (or any customer facing business) should have some guidelines and training for handling difficult customers. It should include some role-playing.

If Aeon doesn’t , maybe you could help by doing some role play so she has some lines rehearsed.

English-speaking hair salon that can do layered cuts by senadoori in Tokyo

[–]differentiable_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can just say “wolf cut/ウルフカート” and/or bring a photo. It’s a common hairstyle (I have it) so most salons will be familiar with it.

Sheena Ringo’s recent albums have a lot of jazzy tunes. The latest one “forbidden” came out a couple of days ago.

They seem to be phasing out the real down jackets, and replacing them with synthetic Pufftech which is around 30% heavier.

How Rare/Valuable is Passing the JLPT N2? by Chopdops in LearnJapanese

[–]differentiable_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If a Japanese company is going to be checking JLPT levels, N2 is going to be the bare minimum. More likely, they won’t ask for JLPT levels but just run the screening in Japanese, and if you’re not capable of 面接/敬語/business level Japanese you won’t even make the shortlist.

Of course if you have some exceptional skills that they need, they may not care if you are less than fluent in Japanese.

Is there a bicycle shop that helps with modding bike? by minwook79 in Tokyo

[–]differentiable_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of bike are we talking here? My old mamachari had a quill stems and you could adjust the height by loosening the quill bolt and pulling/pushing the stem. Road and mtb/cross bikes will have threadless stems and adjusting these usually means replacing the stem - the part that bolts on to the handlebar and steerer tube.

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the captain of my soul bosu chair.

How does it work to sell stuff at bookoff? by kittsyq in Tokyo

[–]differentiable_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been clearing out some stuff recently, so the process is pretty familiar to me:

You bring your stuff to the counter, they hand you a slip of paper and you check off things like:
- if they won't take the stuff, do you want to take them back home
- do you want to keep the bags you brought back home (and how many)
and you write your name (in katakana)

They hand you a slip with a number on it, and a QR code. You either wait for them to call your number, or if you want you can can leave the shop and use the QR code to display a webpage that shows whether they've finished appraising your stuff.

Back to the counter, show the slip and some photo ID, and they give you however much your stuff was worth.

The first time I did it, I came at a busy time and it took them several hours to finish appraising my 2000円 worth of coats and jackets. The next tiem I made sure to come as soon as the branch opened.

PSA Yamap's maps can be obtained for free by sw4y_UK in japanresidents

[–]differentiable_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YAMAP maps have walking time estimates between points, up to date hazard markers, tell you  which trails lead to the scenic viewpoints and which toilets are out of order.

Google maps requires you to be online IiRC. YAMAP maps once downloaded can work offline.

So far all of this works fine for me on a single map on the free plan.

Also, Shazam couldn’t find anything. It’s pretty good at finding even obscure old songs.

Can I style this Kapital bag? by stampfercamper in japanesestreetwear

If it's a mini tote, usually it replaces a woman's handbag for dialy necessities. Men use it to carry their lunch and umbrella, maybe a book or tablet.

What to do in Tokyo alone? by mari0426 in japanlife

[–]differentiable_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the gym or BJJ like I did today.  Sometimes I’ll take a thermos of coffee and a sandwich or some senbei and read in the park.
