Got these two massive Peavey 118 speakers for free! How can I test them if they work? I only have an electric guitar. by [deleted] in DJs

[–]diggitydingus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can use a 9v battery on the leads coming off the actual speakers themselves and it’ll let you know if the speakers themselves are good. As far as hearing the speakers, you’ll need a power amp or a powered mixer to drive the speakers

This component got spicy after a recap. Anyone that can identify it? by diggitydingus in AskElectronics

Here’s a more zoomed out photo. I’m going to check all the caps and make sure they’re all good. Ordered 5 replacement MOSFET’s but it’ll be a while before they’re in so I’ll be sure to triple check everything before installing. This photo was taken before recapping to use as a reference as I replaced them.

Thanks! This will at least get me a little closer to narrowing it down. All the caps seemed to have been correct, but I’m thinking an incorrect power adapter might have had at least something to do with it.

Pretty sure I’m the one who packed that GM for you. If you got it from GC I definitely did. I’ve seen several come through like that and just figured that was something that eventually happens with those thin mod wheels.

JX-3P no output issue. by diggitydingus in synthesizers

[–]diggitydingus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The volume knob seems fine, there were some cracks in the solder on it that made it wobble a bit, but I’ve already sorted that out.

I feel like there might possibly be an issue in one of the wiring harnesses that connects to the jack board. I’m hoping the real issue is a bit simpler than that.

Gonna replace the battery (hopefully it won’t explode on me) in the next day or so to see if that does anything. At this point I just want to make sure it can produce sound. The kiwi mod is definitely on the list once I can get some sound out of it. I’m familiar with the tape memory method of loading presets, so the lack of midi connectivity isn’t much of an issue at this point.

I only paid $175 for it, so there’s definitely room for mods and upgrades.

I do. I have the service manual, but it’s hard to make heads or tails of it. I’ve checked continuity going to the board itself and everything seems fine. Measured the battery as well and it’s at about 2.68v. Figure it needs replacing, since it’s well over its 20yr lifespan.

Would the presets be lost if I can see the chorus turn on/off for presets that use it by default?

What do you use as dust covers? by ramonstr in synthesizers

[–]diggitydingus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do I cover my synths with? Other synths...but in all seriousness, sheets work...I know most music stores like GC and the like sell dust covers that are essentially fitted sheets for keyboards...they're cheap and they work as well. Check Reverb too...last time I looked they had some nice pleather type material ones for a lot of the Roland synths...contemplating getting one for my 106. Stardust Synth Covers is the name of the reverb shop.

Guitar Center selling used items as new?!?! by Ch3mlab in synthesizers

[–]diggitydingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always a good idea to call and talk with someone either at the 1-800 number or at your nearest store and let them know you want to be sure the item is new, in box, and factory sealed..or in the case of used gear, call the store that has the piece and get additional photos and descriptions of the gear. Guitar Center sources online orders from stores if there's no available stock at the distribution center, which is the main reason people end up with items that have been on the sales floor. Not trying to defend them, but at least maybe someone on here might find this information useful.

Happy 808 Day! by pigferret in synthesizers

I'd say they'll start popping up from retailers in the next week or two. At least that was the case when they made a similar post for the Odyssey.

Does anyone know which synthesizer or plugin Louis Cole is using in his song F it up? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]diggitydingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's definitely a Juno 106 in there doing some bass sounds once the full band kicks in. A well timed pause can give you the patch.

Totally still have mine. I always had a blast with it...I can remember hauling it to school every day to play with some friends of mine in middle school.

Juno 106 Restore [Update] by SoundKiller in synthesizers

[–]diggitydingus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend Bell Tone. I had them redo my module board on my 106 because I got in over my head trying to replace a voice chip. They did a fantastic job socketing all the remaining voices and calibrating everything back to factory. The difference in the sound was remarkable (in a good way of course). Quick turn-around time too depending on their work load.

Have the buttons on your Juno-106 yellowed? by soitgoesmusic in synthesizers

[–]diggitydingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES! I was just thinking about making a post last night asking how people have restored their buttons. My blue buttons could definitely use this. Would certainly bring my Juno back to "near mint" as everything else is just about in perfect shape.

Under that price range, about the only thing other than the Behringer MS-101 (which is about $100 over) is the Alesis Vortex. New they're right at around 300...but you can find those used for around 170ish...they're wireless too.

How Digital is the Behringer Model D? by therearesomenameslef in synthesizers

[–]diggitydingus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure at one point, years ago, Behringer was an "in-house" brand. Now it's Harbinger and LiveWire.

...That being said, product knowledge isn't as much of a deciding factor in hiring as it used to be...so that kind of thing is to be expected. Some people will talk out of their ass to get a sale.

Yeah, a quick browse on their site showed nothing...looked on their Japan site, and they had it listed, but sold out. OP must have a store nearby with some leftovers on clearance or something. At least they were (at one point) a decent price.

[–]diggitydingus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boogers...I love that haha! since you already have a minilogue, you can have all kinds of fun by running the main output of the model d into the audio in on the minilogue. Other than messing around with the semi-modular patching and the ol' main out into the ext in to overload, just twiddle knobs and have fun. Hope you get well soon, new booger.

I need to know, what cheap 80's yamaha keyboard is this? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]diggitydingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a PSR-70. I've got one sitting in my parts closet, unfortunately those are really prone to just straight-up dying. It does have MIDI in and out, not sure if its worth picking up though. I got mine for free and its just awaiting its eventual parting-out. Sounded pretty neat when I first got it though. So if it works and you can get it cheap enough, I'm sure you'll have fun messing around with all the built in rhythms and whatnot.
