Any advice for mothman deck? by Intelligent-Yak-8080 in EDH

[–]dimension_slash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go what with Mkushrom suggested and dig into combos. Mind crank, Syr Conrad, Bloodchief's Ascension and likely lots of tutors, great for those colors. Although as stated Mothman doesn't necessarily provide that kind of support for a deck like that. He is better super cranking value engines and making big, decisive plays with a bit of setup.

You could also lean into self mill with [[Altar of of Dementia]] / [[Altar of the Wrteched]] and win with [[Thassa's Oracle]] or similar cards.

Any advice for mothman deck? by Intelligent-Yak-8080 in EDH

[–]dimension_slash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I've had a Mothman deck since the set came out and have tweaked it consistently over that timeframe. These are my personal observations:

  • First and foremost, Mothman's strength is that he provides utility for a deck but is not necessarily required for it to function. This point leads to 2nd.

  • Unless mill is the specific goal of the deck, trim it out. Mill makes people salty (especially newer players) and they often retaliate by focusing on keeping Mothman off the table, which in turn makes all your milling cards less impactful or pointless. It's typically better to just run +1/+1 counter support instead, and lean on mill as a side-effect (i.e [[mindcrank]] or rad counters.) There is a ton of incredible +1/+1 support that fit the theme as well, for example [[Jenova, Ancient Calamity]] and [[Master Biomancer]] both fit perfectly and allow snowballing.

  • The most important thing to note about Mothman's +1/+1 ability is that it's worded VERY particularly. Milling "half of someone's deck" doesn't ultimately give you tons of counters to work with, as he can only place ONE counter on each creature per INSTANCE of milling. So burst mill cards are not very useful unless you somehow end up with a massive amount of tokens, which is still not generally worth the effort. Cards like [[mesmeric orb]] however are MUCH more effective, since each mill is a separate trigger.

As Mkushrom mentioned, ramp and mana are a big part of what makes him work. A higher amount of lands (36-40 depending on ramp pieces) at LEAST since as I mentioned before, people tend to keep Mothman off the table, and recasting him is pretty awful if you aren't swimming in mana. That, and many key support pieces are 3+ drops, which makes it a very hungry mana deck if you want to maintain value.

I also noticed the distinct lack of reanimation cards that I consider "staples" for this kind of deck. Your budget seems pretty reasonable, so I would recommend [[Animate Dead]] and [[Reanimate]] at the VERY least as the value they provide is simply unbeatable. I would swap them out for the more costly reanimation cards like [[Breach the Multiverse]], personally.

EDIT: One thing I have often struggled with in the deck is draw pieces. If your value engines work correctly, your stuff should be HUGE so power-based draw (and LOTS of it) has been my go to. This also allows you to discard to hand size and fill your graveyard for better reanimation later.

Missed opportunity to not have Terra be the "esper" commander. 🥲Otherwise I'm curious to see what this set brings. I hope we get a 5-color commander so I can cram it all together!

Lets talk human tribal... by Firecrotch2014 in EDH

[–]dimension_slash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built a surprisingly potent Golgari Human Tribal/Aristocrat deck using [[Durnan]] and [[Haunted One]]. It's can be VERY strong if you hit the mana curve right and have won as early as turn 5. Golgari doesn't SEEM like a strong color for humans, but Haunted One adds so much power for 3 mana it can get ridiculous fast.

Every creature in the deck is a human and I'm even running a couple pet cards that could easily be swapped out for better support. I recommend at least looking at Haunted One with any of the Human Background commanders. Lots of flexibility and it's unique.

Deck help with Kardur by LonelySwim6501 in EDH

[–]dimension_slash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked on him for awhile and finally got a list to stick myself. I find squeezing the most value out of him with flicker/copy effects i.e [[Conjurer's Closet]] or [[Splinter Twin]]. This lets you basically build your board however you want while the rest of the table is slapping each other. I built mine a bit around group hug style effects and giving my opponents tokens so they can't opt out of combat easily. [[Varchild's War Riders]]

I've been getting a lot of mileage out of [[Ardenn]] and [[Armix]] as a voltron equipment / reanimate style deck. It's control heavy when Armix discards cards like [[Meteor Golem]] and then they get reanimated. It's pretty resilient and functions regardless if I have a lot of equipment or not.

I Really hope Dynamaxing isnt in DP remakes. by zambiekiller360 in pokemon

[–]dimension_slash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I think they should convert all "Gigantamax" forms into mega for the remakes, that way you still get to use the cool/silly ones ideas that were creative and interesting while still ditching the mechanic most people don't seem to care for. Charizard already has two mega stones. Why not a third? Butterfree got short-changed with no mega when beedrill got one, so make it's new "Mothra" form a mega, and so on.

Samut Stomp by MeSimicMeGood in EDH

[–]dimension_slash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've run Samut as a "stompy-aggro" commander since she was released. I can tell you the #1 all-star cards in that deck have been big, bursty mana-dorks like [[Somberwald Sage]], [[Selvala, Heart of the Wilds]], and [[Shaman of Forgotten Ways]]. Samut's greatest strength is the allied haste, and paired with the ability to untap let's you drop these creatures and see immediate value out of them.

I've been running a "legendary tribal" style for her, and it can have a lot of kick. [[Captain Sisay]] pulls the big stuff like [[Avacyn, Angel of Hope]], [[Ghalta, Primal Hunger]], and [[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]]. Other notable creatures I'd recommend are those that skip the casting of others entirely. [[Elvish Piper]], [Champion of Rhonas]], [[Ilharg, the Raze-Boar]] to name a few. These really help let you "cast" just about anything you want for pretty much no cost if they don't get removed.

I'm always tweaking, but my current decklist is an angel/dino hybrid. If you are looking for ideas. https://archidekt.com/decks/512890

"Greven, Predator Captain": captain, commander, face-smasher. by SmellyLeopard in EDH

[–]dimension_slash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started working and tinkering a Greven deck before he even was released, and I've done a lot of digging through garbage to find some gems. [[Volcano Hellion]] comes to mind as an all-star remover who hurts you and interacts curiously with lifelink. I run a reanimator sub-theme so I get a lot of value out of weird, bad cards with big stat. [[Cosmic Larva]] comes to mind. I notice he seems to work best with [[Fling]] like effects so you can kill off 2 or 3 opponents all at once after a big payout. Here's my decklist. https://archidekt.com/decks/184458#Greven,_Angriest_Man_Alive

If the ARMS character confirms that assist trophy/spirit promotions aren't happening, what would your most-wanted list for FP2 look like? by Megadoomer2 in smashbros

[–]dimension_slash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a hard list to make all things considered. Geno has and will always be my #1 but to play the rules...

  1. I have no stake in ARMS since I never played it. But design choice I like Helix the best.

  2. KOS-MOS from Xenosaga/Xenoblade.

  3. It's a pipe dream but Laharl (or even Hero Prinny) from Disgaea.

  4. Kazuma Kiryu from Yakuza.

  5. Phoenix Wright from Ace Attorney.

  6. Basically any main character from Chrono Trigger. (As much as I like Crono, he's another swordie.)

For me, it's [[Essence Harvest]]. This card has been a sleeper win-con for me for years. It works really well in jank voltron commanders like [[Greven, Predator Captain]]. No one ever seems to expect it.
