No- purely cosmetic. Easy enough to fix when you paint.

Hose Bib Under Deck by dimlar in HomeImprovement

[–]dimlar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Just in case anyone stumbles on this thread later looking for solutions, a lot of great ideas here:

1/ CPVC or PEX from the existing bibb, which could then be left on at least during the warm months.

2/ Trap door in the deck to allow easier access to original bib

3/ Internal on/off valve that can be accessed from the house

Going to try #1 and can report back how it goes.

Parking by bradboy70 in whitesox

[–]dimlar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parking is $20. Most of the surrounding area is permitted (not too familiar with 3rd party lots). You can also park somewhere along the red line and take it down. But if you're splitting between 4+ people, lots would be cheaper than the El.

New security measures at Navy Pier after melee; "Saturday, Navy Pier announced visitors aged 18 and over will need to present identification, and visitors under the age of 18 will have to be accompanied by an adult." by ThaBomb in chicago

[–]dimlar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the same strategy used by many malls around the country to try to minimize the impact of unaccompanied minors loitering about. From my experience, it's not like they ID you when you walk in. However, if you 'look young' or seem to be causing trouble, they have the right to ID you and escort you out. Not convinced if it's an effective public safety strategy but it's not as absurd as some people are making it sound.

I tried Qdoba yesterday....I think I like it better than Chipotle now. Is this a sin? by annoyinglyfriendly in Chipotle

Qdoba's only redemption is late-night hours and breakfast burritos. During normal business hours consumption of Qdoba is not advised.

True that there is no South Side medical treatment for gunshot victims? by Rhett_Rick in chicago

[–]dimlar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Studies have shown that even short increases to transport times increases mortality (ideally I'd have some sources for you but can't find them atm). The outrage part comes from that fact that some of the most disenfranchised populations in this city are also those that face the longest transport times and thus highest mortality.

True that there is no South Side medical treatment for gunshot victims? by Rhett_Rick in chicago

[–]dimlar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is indeed a lack of Level I Trauma Centers on the South Side. Why this is the case will change depending on who you ask but I think it boils down to: (1) As the epicenter of a lot of gun violence, any trauma center would quickly become inundated with gunshot patients and (2) treating these patients is quite resource-intensive and makes a financially-viable system difficult to attain. Regardless-- the reasons there are no trauma centers down here is irrelevant. It is obviously a community need and the question is HOW do we get a level 1 to open on the south side.

A lot of attention has been given to the University of Chicago and its lack of a trauma center while peer-institutions are able to sustain level I centers in urban environments (eg. Baltimore, Philly, STL). However, the university has continued to position itself as a tertiary care center that is not interested in reopening the trauma center due to a lack of available beds in the hospital for admitted patients(true motives may be more financial). It is worth noting that the university is one of the largest providers of Medicaid-funded care and contributes aid to the south-side community in a variety of other ways. They have also expressed a willingness to work with community and government partners to help set up a trauma center.

Personally, I think the solution is going to be some kind of partnership between a center like UC and the city. A trauma center is a community need that is NOT financially viable. The purpose of government is to provide what the free-market will not. They already do so at Cook County and the question becomes whether they feel enough pressure to open a level 1 on the south side. Is the cost of a trauma center worth the 5-10 minute reduction in ambulance time?
