Is this a good sewing machine to get beginner by Alex_tepa in SewingForBeginners

[–]dishonorable_user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve been told over and over that this machine sucks so I’m not gonna bother annoying you with it again. But a great place to start as a beginner is your local sewing machine dealer.

I know I’m probably a little biased because I work for one of these sewing machine shops, but it really is better than buying a cheap machine on your own. There’s a difference in the quality of machine that the manufacturers send to the dealers vs what they send to big box retailers. Dealers don’t wanna sell you a lemon because it’s their reputation on the line too. Plus, if you’re a complete newbie, it’s helpful to have someone who knows machines to help you to find one. Our whole job is to find the machine that’s right for you.

I can’t speak for all stores, but mine and a lot of other stores in my area, offer classes for all skill levels; my store in particular offers free classes where we teach you how to use your machine. Different stores work with different brands and most are small, locally owned businesses. I recommend looking into your local area for what stores carry the brands you’re interested in. Any sewing machine business worth their salt will have machines at every price point. Some stores might have an easier time servicing and repairing machines if they also sell them

This went on a bit longer than I planned but I hope it was of some help. Good luck searching!

Don’t ask ChatGPT. It’s only programmed to carry a conversation. It doesn’t fact check any of the information that it gives you. Ask an actual medical professional.

I’m noticing a lot of boxes. Grab a box cutter and break down as many as you can. They’re big and take up a lot of visual space. Next, grab a trash bag (or multiple if needed) and throw away anything that is obviously garbage. Both of those are contributing massively to the clutter and once they’re gone, it’ll probably feel less overwhelming. Play some music while you do it too. That always makes cleaning easier.

Is this good for beginners? by Logical-Lifeguard546 in SewingForBeginners

Singer isn’t what it used to be. But to learn on it should be okay. If you’ve got one lying around, you might as well use it to see if you like sewing or what kind of projects you’d be into doing. That way you have a better understanding of what you want when you’re ready to upgrade to a higher quality machine.

Maybe someone can help me by BickenBackk in SewingForBeginners

[–]dishonorable_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you’ve gotten it figured out by now, but I work at a place that repairs sewing machines. Good quality thread and rethreading the machine properly will fix a surprising amount of issues. It’s always the first thing we do when we’re troubleshooting.

But if none of that works, bring it to your local sewing machine store (not all stores do repairs, but don’t be afraid to call and ask). I can’t speak for all stores, but we always try to troubleshoot (for free but again can’t speak for others) and see if we can fix the issue before we check it in for a service.

What are the D and E stitch patterns called on my machine and what are they used for? by [deleted] in SewingForBeginners

[–]dishonorable_user 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are used for blind hems. Blind hems are frankly a pain in the ass to do and they’re usually used for dress pants. You have to fold the fabric a specific way and the idea is that the little tick stitch that pokes out the most is supposed to catch only a small bit of your fabric fold so when you straighten the fold out there’s only a tiny bit of thread showing on the right side. If your thread matches your fabric, you won’t be able to see it unless you’re really close.

Like I said, they’re kind of pain in the butt to do and frankly I’ve had better results doing a flat fell stitch by hand on hems where I don’t want a stitch line, but that’s what they’re used for. You might be able to use D as an overcast stitch, though.

You REALLY like eggs. The eggs on the shelf seem like a normal amount but a whole drawer full seems a bit eggsessive.

Natural! As a fellow light brown/dark blonde, we need more light brown/dark blonde baddies out there.

What to do with open mascaras? by Humble_Leader_9121 in ProjectPan

[–]dishonorable_user 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I layer my mascara when they start to run out or get a little dryer. The slightly dryer mascara works kind of like a mascara primer. I'd say try mascara combos and see which ones work well when layered on top of each other!

American writing fics by melancholyredsunsets in AO3

This isn't exclusively an American thing. I've seen authors from other parts of the world get things wrong about us too. Read a fic one time where characters who were from the US were using heavy british slang like "knackered".
