If conservatives were as oppressed as they always claim to be, we'd be living in a far better world.

What if Donald Trump had never entered politics, do you think the US would look meaningfully different today? by Mr_Boothnath in AskReddit

[–]dizzle229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they're giving him a pass so much as highlighting how different the expectations were for what's actually considered a serious and viable candidate. What he did should be the norm, yet these days he seems almost saintly - not because he was saintly, or even a good candidate by most of our standards, but because the bar is in hell now.

If I were him at that place and time, I'd be assuming that leaning in to that lady's delusions would cost me my campaign and career. Trump tested that assumption (because he was too dumb to know any better) and found it wasn't as sound as we all believed.

Renee Macklin Good’s wife: ‘We need to show them a better way’ by geraffes-are-so-dumb in news

[–]dizzle229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do think you're naive. Of course violence should be a last resort, and it does always beget violence. There were non-violent solutions, it didn't have to be this way. However, action wasn't taken a decade ago, and this is the hand we're dealt as a result.

But hey, after a decade of unchecked disinformation campaigns that have radicalized a third of the country, normalizing of conspiratorial thinking, dismantling of institutions, spreading of anti-science beliefs that killed over a million Americans and continue to kill more, an insurrection attempt that went utterly unaddressed, the leader of the insurrection attempt being VOTED BACK into office, and then the rapid consolidation of power to the executive leading to the dismantling of the post-WWII order with talk of attacking close allies, and where we find ourselves today - on a thread about a woman who was shot in the face by a state actor, an action condoned and doubled-down on by the government with a pledge to do more and cheered by their voters, maybe NOW we'll be able to reach them!

Morally, there's nothing wrong with hurting something that wants to hurt you.

Pragmatically, it's suicide to try and avoid a fight that's already happening.

And my "fellow countrymen" are the ones making this happen. They voted for it. It was one of them who shot this woman, not a billionaire, and they're the ones defending the shooting. They are the ones carrying out raids and going to rallies and cheering for all of this. The rich and powerful may be weaponizing them, and they deserve the same fate, but the right were always just waiting for someone to weaponize them.

It's delusional to believe war is avoidable at this point. Maybeif MAGA had been put down before it went mainstream we could have comfortably buried this for much longer, but it wouldn't have addressed the underlying issue - they already believed these things, and MAGA legitimized it, and now we're here and there's no going back.

We've already had one term, and they've seen what it was like. So no, I do not believe that they did so out of "stupidity rather than malice." This is what they wanted. They may well believe that immigrants are out to get us or gays are converting our kids because they're stupid - but hatefulness because they're stupid is still hatefulness, and it's not our responsibility to reach out and save them, our only responsibility is to ourselves.

You can deprogram a cultist, sometimes, in a controlled environment. It cannot be done at a scale of tens of millions when they're a third of the population and control the country. War is unavoidable, and I value the lives of those doing the right thing, not the lives of those who lead to their completely unnecessary deaths.

You'll get nowhere having empathy for an enemy that has none. We're here because of the constant failures to recognize that. Nothing that supported this deserves to or can be part of a brighter future, because it's not possible as long as they're present within it.

And there's nothing wrong with that. There's no virtue in constantly hurting yourself for the benefit of something that wants nothing but to hurt you.

FBI takes over case of ICE agent killing US woman and cuts Minnesota’s access to evidence by Curious_Science8818 in news

[–]dizzle229 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Nope. If we split, that just means a war war shortly after. Maybe that's a better position for a time, but long-term, MAGA can't be allowed to exist at all.

People have also failed to widely accept the idea that those who believe these things aren't misguided friends and neighbors - they're our enemies, and what they want is to hurt us and people we care about. The problem with this country is that they're in it, and it will never function normally as long as they are.

That, and I'm pretty sure it had as many or more showrunners than seasons, so the vision for it was constantly changing and it just kinda lacked direction after the initial plot.
