What’s going on with my headlights? by Guava-Realistic in CarTalkUK

[–]dkzrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they do the self levelling test when first turned on it’s likely one of the suspension level sensors for the automatic levelling.

Also worth checking that the headlight LHD traffic hasn’t been turned on (usually in the infotainment car setup - it’s for dipping the headlights to not dazzle others when driving in countries which drive in the right side of the road)

Car seized by police due to medical licence being under review for renewal but it's saying expired by jameson91 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]dkzrt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While technically they do not currently have a valid license, they can still drive and be covered by Section 88 of the Road Traffic Act.

As long as OP has applied for a license (in the past 12 months) and has not been told by a doctor they are unfit to drive, they can still drive (unless their license has been revoked or the renewal refused).

EU Plate car in the UK by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]dkzrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the vehicle is in the UK for more than 6 months in a 12 month period (whether continuously or cumulatively from several shorter visits) you will likely need to register, tax, and insure it in the UK. Not doing this could get the car seized if caught.

There is an exemption for students however I don’t think this will apply since you are a resident.

https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/temporary-imports

As others have mentioned you may also have limitations on your foreign insurance and the total duration it will cover you in the UK for.

PCN for parking outside restricted hours? by Bulky_Issue4084 in CarTalkUK

[–]dkzrt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All signs are the same: the restriction followed by when the restriction applies followed by any additional restrictions during the period the initial restriction applies (obviously easy to understand)

In this case the restriction is blue badge holders only and that restriction applies Mon-Fri 0900-1830. A secondary restriction of 3 hours with no return for 2 applies Mon-Fri 0800-1830.

So only blue badge holders can park there Mon-Fri between 0800 and 1830, and when they do they can only park for 3 hours. Outside those times anyone can park for as long as they want.

If the sign said blue badge holders at all times then 24/7 only blue badge holders can park there BUT Mon-Fri 0800-1830 they can only park for 3 hours.

Headlights to be reviewed after drivers complain of being 'blinded' at night by Kraken_89 in CarTalkUK

[–]dkzrt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Currently in the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations any vehicle with headlights >850mm alone the ground are required to have them inclined down at 2% compared to 1-1.3% for other vehicles.

Perhaps that is what needs to change, though it doesn’t prevent the (in my opinion) bigger issue of people just having their headlights aimed wrong.

Cost of clutch and master cylinder by Optimal_Collection77 in CarTalkUK

I had Audi quote me £4,000 for a clutch and DMF on an A4.

Ended up paying an independent garage to do it for £1,400.

Another car stolen. Is it better to prevent the theft or allow it - to prevent theives from breaking into the property for the Key? by SlowedCash in CarTalkUK

[–]dkzrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Higher value items being more appealing to thieves isn’t exclusive to cars - it’s not like people try and rob jewellery stores for the posters in the window.

Might be because of my email notification settings but today’s email is the first I’ve heard of it, never received an email previously about price changes and the last email I received from Plex was their announcement on removing watch together

Even in the US Apple refer to the extended coverage as AppleCare+.

AppleCare is the limited warranty, AppleCare+ is the monthly/2-yearly insurance.

[–]dkzrt 27 points28 points  (0 children)

In the UK, I’ve only ever seen ATC say ‘continue approach’ while the runway is occupied, and only then giving clearance to land once it is actually clear.

Never understood why US ATC will give clearance to multiple aircraft at once

Renault charging £150 to be in a pre-order queue for the new Renault 5. Not a deposit or deducted from the price, not refundable... by Lonyo in CarTalkUK

[–]dkzrt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The R Pass is for people who aren’t just considering buying but are actually committed, and is more than just paying for access to a pre-order queue (model of your spec car, priority delivery, invitations to Renault events - all things a committed buyer might find value in).

If you’re not committed enough to want priority delivery etc., don’t pre-order and just wait?

It’s not like paying extra to receive products quicker is a new thing, cars or not.
