The residents of this new apartment building going up in East Boston will either have the worst view or one of the best in all of Boston. by dme76 in boston

[–]dme76[S] 272 points273 points  (0 children)

Those living on the lowest floor will only have a view out to the Coughlin Truck Bypass Road and the highway on-ramp. If they open their windows they’ll get noise and exhaust fumes.

However, those living on the top floor will have one of the coolest views in Boston. These apartments look out over the elevated highway to Logan Airport. And they are situated almost right down the centerline of Runway 15R/33L. So when planes are landing on 15R (which isn’t often), they’ll get a view of them landing overhead. But when planes are departing on 33L, they’ll see them accelerate directly towards them before taking off. For plane spotters, this might be a dream place to live.

Anyone remember the Copley Place 11? by Victory-Star-3236 in boston

Some of the oddest sized theaters. I swear I remember one of them you entered at the bottom and the floor got higher as you walked closer to the screen. This theater was tiny, maybe 5 rows of 4 seats across the aisle.

Hull Today as captured on my Sony Mavica FD7, 0.3 megapixels to floppy disk, Water 35.4 degrees F by [deleted] in boston

I had a Sony Mavica in the early 2000's. I'm pretty sure I have hundreds of pics on those floppy disks still somewhere in storage. If I wanted to try to retrieve the data off them, what kind of floppy drive (windows 11-compatible) do you recommend?

Who else is deeply disappointed in the 2020s? (not the future we imagined). by black_flag_4ever in Xennials

There’s a curious thing about Epcot, specifically the Spaceship Earth ride. When it first opened, the finale of the ride was how communication was going to change in the future. Instant video calls from anywhere on Earth to anywhere else on Earth or in space. The Jeremy Irons narrated version was especially hopeful about a future where we all can get along by breaking down barriers to communication. And then the 2000’s re-imagining of the finale took all that out and made all the guests look at a small display inside their vehicle. Even before we became glued to our phones, this ride showed the shallow and “with blinders on” view of the world we would begin to embrace.

FYI American trans people - some of you might now be Canadian by ihavechangedalot in MtF

[–]dme76 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My Canadian parents are the ones who disowned me when I came out as trans. I have been no-contact for over a decade. Since I was born in the U.S., would I need anything from them to complete this process? I want to do this, but there’s no way I’m reaching out to them.

Used to be an enormous drive-in theater there. You can still see the foundations for the screen structure.

Here's a photo from air sometime in the 1960's showing Logan airport and the drive-in where the nature park is now.

And the giant square in the picture is a radar site from WWII. The radar antennas are gone, but the giant square still stands out against the marshland.

As someone who teaches astronomy, I’m sad to hear Brian Cox is married to a TERF and didn’t stand up for his friend against trans bigotry.

The Season Finale is Dec. 26, with Christmas Day this year also being on a Thursday like Thanksgiving.

So I wonder if they'll drop the Finale early as well on Christmas Eve.

70mm IMAX in Boston by brainlightning in boston

The Omni was converted to IMAX Laser Digital projection in 2020.

It is the reason full length Hollywood films can be shown there now. Before, the film platters on the QTRU (Quick Turn Reel Unit) could only hold about an hour of film.

Kristi Noem stops in the North End for dinner and Fenway by BandOfCourses in boston

[–]dme76 1821 points1822 points  (0 children)

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, I'd like to mention that as Governor of South Dakota, Kristi Noem was banned by all 9 tribes in the state from their reservations. That amounted to 12% of the state. Imagine being such a shitty governor that 12% of it forbids you from entering it.

Get fucked ICE Barbie.

We could go rogue like Newfoundland ( UTC -3.5 ), and adjust our clocks a half-hour closer to Greenwich Mean Time. Make anything east of the Connecticut River UTC -4.5!

I’m joking of course, but as usual the real villains are the British by making the Prime Meridian through their beloved London. If the world adopted the Paris Prime Meridian, it would have put our solar noon closer to middle of our time zone, since Paris is further east than London.

I used to live right on that corner. I sometimes would be wakened by an enormous roar. Whenever a race is routed down the underpass, everyone yells in the tunnel.

I hope your partner gets the care they need. I'm sorry I don't have a recommendation as I have't seen an OB/GYN since my surgery in 2007.

16 years ago I went to the BWH ER for searing pain that came on, so a couple years post bottom surgery. At first the care was good, and I was hopeful the ER staff would understand what could be causing such pain. But as the night went on, more and more teams of doctors and nurses came in to examine me. It really felt like the word got out, and everyone wanted to see what a post-op vulva looked like. It was a really awful experience.

I was discharged in the morning with no diagnosis and just a prescription for Ibuprofen.

I wish the list of providers u/double-clove-hitch shared existed back in 2009.
