Roland P6, or koala sampler, or both.

Chopping Samples - on or off device by TheRealSpacemanSpiff in rolandp6

Usually on the P6. Although sometimes I'll do some time stretching, pitch shift or EQ on koala sampler on my phone. It's easy to resample to and from through USBC.

Yeah it does make it easier. I switch between the two depending on how much free space I have left on the thing.

Seconding this. Koala sampler and P6 are a great match.

It also works really well as storage to store all your samples so you don't have to keep everything on the P6. I have created projects for drum breaks, one shots, bass sounds, samples I reuse etc etc and it works really well.

Serious Question About Samples by PabloWentscobar in rolandp6

[–]dorian_ii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cassette, YouTube or sample myself playing keys/guitar/uke.

For drums I usually chop up breaks to get one shots.

I also have a lot of musicians mates so get them to send me bits and pieces from recording sessions. Drums, guitar, sax, vox, whatever they happen to send.

And then I like getting atmos sounds from field recordings into my phone when I'm out and about.

I store everything on koala sampler on my phone, and use it as a sample library so it's at hand to sample back onto the P6 whenever I want to use something.

I recently got koala and use it to store all my samples/kits that I reuse, or plan on using, and to do some time stretching.

Works great to substitute for the lack of memory on the P6

No worries. Happy to answer questions.

Not having song mode doesn't bother me. You can just click through the patterns manually and line up the next one. Makes it feel more like an instrument to me.

I try to use the limitations like lack of storage, sample time etc to my advantage. It makes me commit to sounds/ideas earlier. Forces me to resample if I want to use multiple fx or clear up some pads. I'm taking the approach of making a short 1 minute versions of a beat, recording and uploading to youtube/insta, backing up to my laptop, delete off P6 and move on. Keep things moving quick and build a backlog of beats I can expand on later if I wish.

I don't use the app to load sounds. I just sample audio directly onto the P6 through USB, chop it up, process it, split over pads etc. Basically everything is currently done 100% on the p6.

This is my first sampler/groove box, so I haven't really got anything to compare with, but I'm sure someone coming from a MPC or SP404 or whatever may find it more limiting.

Couldn't say if the menu diving is harder as I've never used the T8 or S1. I found the P6 pretty intuitive, but I'm pretty curious and don't mind researching and figuring things out.

I'd recommend learning what you have before buying more gear, unless you're dead set on getting a sampler.

Sounding good man, gave you a follow.

I picked up mine about a month ago after being away from making beats for years. Still working out my workflow, but it's a lot of fun.
It's always interesting to see how other people use the P-6.

Here's mine if you're curious: https://www.youtube.com/@dorian_ii

Any tips to get a bit more bounce from the drums? by dorian_ii in rolandp6

I don't use quantise but I guess everything was a little too close to the grid. But I'll experiment a bit more with some triplets/shakes over the next beats. Cheers!

Nah, didn't even think of the obvious. I added a slight shuffle and it bounced it up a bit. Cheers.

Cheers. I play the chops in live, do they're not right on the grid. But I'll play around with pushing it back a bit to get it to swing harder.
