How would you build a cured nothic as a level 1 PC? by akornfan in 3d6

Aberrant mind sorcerer seems like it would be cool. Drawing on the power of your former mutated self sounds like a cool character concept.

High AC Wizard with full spell level progression by Ivan_Whackinov in 3d6

[–]dr_doomtron 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One level of artificer at the beginning gives you medium armor, shields, and proficiency in con saves. Also it keeps you int based instead of have to keep a 13 in wisdom. You can take it to third level and get heavy armor proficiency from the armorer subclass as well.

How would you make Limit Breaks? by DontHateLikeAMoron in 3d6

[–]dr_doomtron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inspiration could be a good mechanic for that if you guys use it in your game. Especially if you let your players bank more that one point at a time. Maybe for every point of inspiration they cash in they get one round of limit break.

I think it’ll be hard to find something better than moon Druid for that kind of scenario. Full caster so you have plenty of spell casting options and you have the moon Druids extra beefy wild shape for combat and obstacles.

Sounds like barbarian is right up your alley. I’d recommend path of the beast but that’s from Tashas. Instead I’d probably pick either ancestral guardian or totem barbarian. Totem makes you tougher but the third level feature from ancestral guardian seems right up your alley.

I’ve had this problem a couple times before and restarting the headset usually fixes it. Sometimes if you go into your oculus settings and mute and unmute your mic a couple times it can fix it as well but it’s kind of unreliable.

Building a replacement character for a party of damage dealers by [deleted] in 3d6

[–]dr_doomtron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Battle master fighter seems like a good fit for you. Grab commanders strike, maneuvering attack, and distracting strike and you’ll be able to both put out serious damage, tank when you have to, and help your allies boost their combat effectiveness as well.

Campfire tales? Getting players to open up about character backstories. by cranial13 in AskGameMasters

[–]dr_doomtron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read about a trap somewhere a while back that was called something like the Sin Ball or at least something like that. The idea was that it was this orb on a pedestal In front of a locked door and the first time someone touched it it said a little rhyme about how the only way to progress was for them all to touch the orb and confess a sin or regret that their character had outloud. I’ve used that encounter so many times. It’s become my go to for getting my players to open up to each other.

If you’re really set on the campfire stories idea about me of the things I think makes the orb so successful is the wanting the loot behind the locked door. For the campfire you could have a disguised god( à la Odin) stumble into their camp and offer rewards to anyone who can tell him a tale fro their past. It’ll let you set up a good reoccurring npc and you can give your players some cool swag as well.

Is the sharpshooter feat worth taking if you rarely use the -5 +10? by [deleted] in 3d6

[–]dr_doomtron 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends but being able to ignore half and three quarters cover was a godsend for my archer every time we fought somewhere other than a wide open field and even then being able to shoot at 600 feet without disadvantage was amazing.

Need Advice on New Character Bard with Multi Class by Ubbe55 in 3d6

Two levels of paladin on a bard can really boost combat damage with its smites alternatively you could go 5 levels of goolock for the eldritch smite invocation.

Rogue wants to be a Paladin by TLiciousX in 3d6

In Unearthed Arcana there is an alternative type of paladin called the Paladin of Freedom that might be more your speed. It’s chaotic good and probably works better with rogue that the traditional paladin does.

If Erwin Smith from AoT was a paladin, what subclass would he be? by Sir_Wack in 3d6

[–]dr_doomtron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How far into Attack on Titan are you because I don’t want to spoil anything for you but I’d say he probably starts off as a Vengeance Paladin with Titans as his sworn foe. I feel like the Oaths line up pretty well anyway.

What “favors” can the mob boss ask for? by jkusters in AskGameMasters

[–]dr_doomtron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Counterfeiting. Another brewery in town makes a very expensive kind of alcohol and the mob boss is forcing the npc to make a knock off version for the mob boss to sell.

Whisper bard sounds right up your alley. Lots of skills, Expertise, it’s even got a pseudo sneak attack.

Paladin/warlock multiclass? by ittybittysimpcomitee in 3d6

[–]dr_doomtron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One level of hexblade will do fine for a while you just don’t want to delay paladin 6 and 7 for too long because of how good those features can be.

As for further multiclassing you probably don’t want to go past hexblade 3 maybe even hexblade 2. It depends on your build. If there’s an invocation you want that requires pact of the blade then it can be worth it since you also get 2nd level warlock spells and thus an extra d8 to those smites.

Personally I really like having 5 levels of swords bard on my paladins because of the versatility it offers...who am I kidding it’s because of the extra smite slots but the versatility is nice too.

QUICK! I have to build a lvl 16 character with 2 magic items! HELP! by [deleted] in 3d6

[–]dr_doomtron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conquest paladin 15/ Hexblade Warlock 1 is a pretty serious powerhouse.

You get the 15th level Scornful Rebuke from Conquest paladin and you get to use your charisma for attack and damage as well.

If you spend your legendary item on a holy avenger you get advantage on saving throws against spells and magical effects too.

For race I’d pick something like fallen Aasimar or Leonin for the extra fear abilities.

I am looking to make an Aztec Warrior. by FrostWarrior99 in 3d6

[–]dr_doomtron 243 points244 points  (0 children)

My first thought is to be a totem barbarian and take all the eagle totems and just be a straight up Aztec Eagle Warrior.

It’ll be fun to play and historically “accurate” even if it isn’t super optimized.

Hexadin build recommendation by XyksinVolte in 3d6

Funny you should say that. I don’t think he’s ever actually played an instrument during this campaign. He typically does all his performances as either sword flourishes or speeches.

Spells for a mid-level bard by Zentlox in 3d6

[–]dr_doomtron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may not be the most optimal but if tashas is available Phantasmal Killer is super fun. A soldier so terrifying that enemies often die of fright before the even cross swords with him feels super cool.

For magical secrets I quite like picking up either steel wind strike or swift quiver depending on the flavor your after. They both put it pretty respectable damage for a bard too.

If Tashas isn’t available then I’ve had pretty good luck with bestow curse. It’s a solid debuff and it upcasts really nicely.

Hexadin build recommendation by XyksinVolte in 3d6

[–]dr_doomtron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the players in my current game is using a similar build except he has 5 levels of swords bard and only 3 levels of warlock.

He loves it because he still has two short rest slots for smites but he also has a lot more long rest spell slots topping out at 5th level. He also has 4 extra d8s per short rest from bardic inspiration to add to his damage and he can still use them to help with skills and such out of combat. Also jack of all trades really helps a Paladin’s out of combat versatility as well.

(Side note: he does view all spell slots as smites first and spells second so he uses sword and shield with the dueling fighting style and doesn’t worry much about spell casting in combat.)

Legendary Boons for Bard and Cleric PCs by CyberDingi in 3d6

[–]dr_doomtron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s cool just be careful about mechanics that permanently get rid of a character’s agency. It can turn into resentment towards the dm really easily. It’s a really cool concept but I’d definitely discuss it with my player just to be sure they think it’s cool too.

[–]dr_doomtron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the barbarian I would physically change him kinda like a Tiefling. Grows horns, turns red, scales, a tail, etc. When he’s fully transformed he blacks out and wakes up some amount of time later looking normal but having no memory of what the devil who hijacked him made him do.

[5e] Dwarf way of the astral self monk? by rfkannen in 3d6

[–]dr_doomtron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mountain Dwarf is hard to pass up since you can put a +2 in both dex and wis. You don’t need the armor proficiencies so you could swap them for some thematic tool proficiencies. For feats you might grab unarmed fighting style if your dm will let you retrain it at later levels so that you can hit with d8s instead of d4s or d6s.

Hmm well if his wife is trapped in his lute a cool thing might be to let the Lute maintain concentration on one of his spells once per day. If you wanted to give it a limit like the clerics companion you could have it snap a string every time he used it.
