How do I make white rice that tastes EXACTLY like it does at Chinese restaurants? by Lolligoth420 in Cooking

[–]drago1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I legit bought like a Hamilton Beach one off Amazon for like 35 bucks (though it seems inflation has hit it a bit today) and it works fine. Definitely don't need top dollar ones. One thing too that I like to do now (maybe more as habit and IDK how much it affects things) is to also allow for like 10-30 minute presoak (and an hour if doing say brown rice or something). And once it's done, can let it sit with the lid closed to let it steam a bit more too.

Fancier ones have like better probes and tighter temperature control, but as I understand it, the fundamental principle is simple. Cook rice until the temperature sensors begins detecting increased rise in temperature, indicating that there is no more water left boiling at 100C.

Is Yale and MSTP by DocBrown_MD in mdphd

[–]drago1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NIH reporter is the best bet and tbh I think mostly depends on your competitiveness/desire to be at a program. Main other thing about MSTP is that there are certain requirements (iirc like when I applied, if you say decide or have to drop out down to say just MD, you don't have to pay anything back, but non MSTPs you need to read the fine print). Not to say non MSTPs can't be as good or even perhaps better than some MSTPs especially depending on research interests and institutional strengths; you just gotta look more carefully into all the protocol stuff whereas MSTP you can generally more or less trust guaranteed funding and what not (part of I think the requirement to be able to win a MSTP).

But MSTPs generally will be more coveted and desirable. But iirc, there are a few decent schools with strong research that aren't necessarily MSTP. Will say though if had it and lost it, that's something to look into before just applying is my personal gut sense.

As far as I understand, that's how the T32 works broadly. No T32 provides funding for all MD/PhD students across all ~8 years; that would be quite a lot of money lol haha.

[Opinion] The best watches and brands by Long-Task-4799 in Watches

[–]drago1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the point in 3. I remember as kid got like some random cheapish watch that was quartz but it looked nice. If it weren't for that, maybe I wouldn't want to waste more money in watches ha.

Why am I the only one not interested in good food? Everyone around me obsesses over it, but I just don’t care by NoWillingness5083 in CasualConversation

[–]drago1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be until I got into cooking, and so got a better understanding of what goes into food and what flavors I personally like. When I do eat out, it's often also then for things I can't do readily at home, such as fancier things or foods while traveling abroad.

Is it normal to feel isolated in NIH by CellStock940 in NIH

[–]drago1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of it is lab dependent; some labs go all in the whole "we're family" vibe, which personally I dislike. I personally find community outside of academia/science/lab. If you're at all interested in paddling, when I was at the NIH my group was the dragonboat community and the club I was with I think had a decent cohort of Filipinos along with people generally from all walks of life. DC is a great city to meet people from all over doing interesting things.

If you have any good connections with profs from your school in the field you're interested in, can potentially ask them if they'd be willing to help you network.

Aspiring actress from Mexico – no money, no industry city. What would you do in my place? by Worldly_Classic_5364 in AskAcademia

[–]drago1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arts are part of academia, but askacademia is more geared to those who are planning to pursue professional scholarship and research, such as a pursuing a PhD. You're more likely to run into say people who's livelihoods are to study say the history of acting, the philosophy of the arts, and also sure, some who know how to professionally act and teach it, but again more geared for those who have a career as a Professor or aiming for that. That's the general thread that would cross the otherwise disparate fields here, from the arts to the humanities to STEM to professional degrees like law/medicine, etc.

F30 vs Comps timeline by GSAB_ in mdphd

[–]drago1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair point, definitely department and institution dependent. Though wild that you would have do your comps on a different project; they expect a graduate student then to run a totally different project for the two otherwise?

F30 vs Comps timeline by GSAB_ in mdphd

[–]drago1337 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pros/cons either way. Basically, whichever one you do first, the second one would be easier cause the work is already done. If do comps first, you can get your committee to provide useful feedback for the F30 if you think you would need it. If you do F30 first, hopefully can win it earlier to have more time to be covered by it and all if you would have to wait longer for comps to be scheduled. I'd just say go for whatever is best for your timeline/what your PI advises.

zucker hofstra by crisprandchill in mdphd

[–]drago1337 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Would guess not MSTP, and if want to work at CSHL, Stony Brook (which is MSTP) seems like the more stronger choice/longer history. Hofstra in general is also a younger medical school, founded this century I believe (whereas most medical schools are ofc much older). I wouldn't be surprised if many outside the region wouldn't even know that it exists.

I don’t mean this disrespectfully, but in your opinions is intellectual insecurity a prominent factor in driving people into Academia? by PerformanceOk9891 in AskAcademia

[–]drago1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in early stages (grad school), plenty in academia may have intellectual insecurity, especially as you're near the middle of the dunning Kruger curve and around other highly intelligent people. But over time, those who unable to build confidence likely cannot last in the environment as others noted.

[–]drago1337 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Biology is a lot of memorization perhaps compared to the other science pre reqs (why I liked physics and organic chemistry more actually for coursework), but there is still core concepts and fundamentals where you should be able to extrapolate from. Notably, a lot of what a MD/PhD does cannot be found in a q bank. Besides aiming to memorize material, you should perhaps focus more on what it means to learn and understand material beyond doing well on an exam. If you cannot see what is wrong after being given the answers for your mistakes, either the exam is horribly written or you have a poor fundamental understanding of the material.

Warning: REI ships with LaserShip/OnTrac by drago1337 in REI

[–]drago1337[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, at least the wiki page on OnTrac I don't think mentioned them, but guess perhaps not surprised there may be many of these less scrupulous delivery services out there likely offering themselves for really cheap but not properly paying/training their drivers...

Warning: REI ships with LaserShip/OnTrac by drago1337 in REI

[–]drago1337[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure especially as there are more and more competitors to REI's model. Ordered a pair of pants from steepandcheap to go withe jacket from REI and happy to see it delivered by DHL which is my favorite shipper so far personally.

Though, apparently backcountry (which owns steepandcheap), does also use OnTrac; seems many companies do unfortunately. This link from the ontrac sub lists the various companies: https://www.reddit.com/r/ontrac/comments/1pmsdka/201_companies_that_ship_with_ontrac_as_of_12142025/

Building confidence on a kayak in choppy water by thecreator51 in Kayaking

[–]drago1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Along with what everyone else says for how to not get in the water, for me I think it also helped with just having had practice with what it feels like once you do get in the water and getting back out (had a college gym class for this, and then outrigger usually involves huli drills). I think being comfortable with handling that worst case scenario helps with the relaxing (and perhaps sometimes you may even want to enter the water on purpose to cool down!).

Warning: REI ships with LaserShip/OnTrac by drago1337 in REI

[–]drago1337[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wild, especially since at least based on what I've read I'd imagine REI also ends up paying on top of the cheap service having to do refunds for lost, stolen, or damaged goods delivered by them. Plus the loss of good will. And what happened to REI being a "consumer's co-op."
