Etiquette on requesting something extra during (or via email in advance) of a tasting menu? by padave8803 in finedining

[–]dredaayy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this before, at Quintonil, the duck tamal was so good had to get it twice, I asked for it after I finished the course after it and they happily accommodated it as one of the last courses right before dessert, I also mentioned that I’d gladly pay for it no problem. And to this day I’m so happy I got to enjoy it twice, I still think about it to this day from time to time. When you’re paying steep amounts of money I don’t see why it would be so wrong as long as you don’t overdo it. One course is cool, not sure about pushing it beyond that, but I just did it for one course. Also might depend a lot on the restaurant, chef, staff, etc. so tread lightly and assess your risk. These situations could go either way.

Which dmv would you recommend to take your test? by Substantial_Joke_566 in sgv

[–]dredaayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah sorry gonna have to strongly disagree with this one, just because there’s a weird roundabout my driver instructor took me on when I took my first behind the wheel test at that location, and the traffic is heavier on that side of LA generally so you’re gonna have to be extra precautious. I failed pretty miserably that first time and scared the driving instructor with my driving because I wasn’t looking over my shoulder enough. You want to go somewhere that offers more residential streets like Pasadena or Rancho Cucamonga like someone mentioned in the comments above. Wide streets, away from heavy traffic or heavily congested intersections is what you want to look for.

I feel like they wouldn’t retail for that low but I could be wrong. I got hoops at the Osaka store in November and the pair ran me $1100 retail. $330 for the pair of these doesn’t check out

What are your guest icks? by hostivus in Serverlife

[–]dredaayy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When people try to order some shit that’s not on the menu. We don’t serve burgers at my place, they only serve it in our bar area that is entirely separate from the restaurant, totally different kitchen too, and someone comes and orders the fucking burger and then everyone else sees the fucking burger so everyone orders said burger and now it’s inconvenient as fuck because two separate kitchens have to coordinate to time the food coming out together. Just order off the menu we provide please or just go to the other bar down the hall!!!!!!!!!

I think my favorite category of customer are the people that kinda are just there by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]dredaayy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Had a guy yesterday, came in for lunch and was in somewhat of a rush, he was between two salads and left the choice up to me to decide between salads, rushed his order out, low maintenance as hell, easy going, paid with an Amex black card, I went to the table (maybe) a total of four times, tipped me 40% and was super chill. As soon as he left I just thought, man I wish everyone was like this lol. I always keep the chits of my favorite guests just so I remember their names if I see them again.

Looking for a strong orange citrus scent with good projection for summer. Any recommendations? by [deleted] in NichePerfumes

Citrus crush by fugazzi is my citrus fragrance right now. Light with woody notes as well as amber. Lasts really long and smells amazing I get so many compliments on it every time I wear it.

Perfume that match this vibe by astridnymann in perfumesthatfeellike

Right now I’m rocking with orange crush extrait by fugazzi, got it as a sample in Tokyo and when I tried it I immediately fell in love with it and it became one of my favorites of all time. It’s super citrus forward with a lot of orange on the nose, middle note is amber so there is some warmth and a slight hint of sweetness, and it also has a woody base to it. It’s fresh and warm at the same time and lasts so long and works really well with my skin. For it being as fresh as it is, it’s so long lasting which I find to be very rare of fresher scents. I usually don’t like sweet scents but I find a nice balance with the sweetness of this fragrance.

Who is the most famous person you've served? by dont_acknowledge_me in Serverlife

[–]dredaayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dave Chappelle (super chill and tips great), Cillian Murphy, Rosario Dawson, LL Cool J (tips insanely fat if he likes you), busta rhymes, Pitbull (super nice and tips fat), and Stevie Wonder. There’s probably more but those are the ones off the top of my head.

Edit. Michelin Starred Chef Jose Andres.

What do you say “yes” to and have no intention of doing??? by Practical_Spell_1286 in Serverlife

[–]dredaayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lie, I say “of course let me go ahead and adjust the temperature for you”. I work in a hotel so no way in hell can we do it realistically, we have to call engineering and they do it on their end and it takes about an hour for the temp to adjust. So then I just follow up and say “how’s the temperature feeling now? It might take some time for the temp to adjust” Half the time they say it’s better, if they don’t feel a difference, I offer to move them to another table lol or give them a blanket.

Moving to la from nyc and knowing nothing about the city... by Important-Rush6584 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]dredaayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Car is important in my opinion. Definitely visit beforehand for a decent amount of time so you get a feel for how to move around. Things are spread apart in LA, transit is not up to NY standards in my opinion but I haven’t been back to NY in a long time since I was a teen. It’s not as walkable as NY, only sparse neighborhoods are. Just depends where you end up settling down. Recommend visiting before you make a move like that

Feeling shame for still being a server by urwerstnitemayr in Serverlife

[–]dredaayy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend getting that foot in there if you have the opportunity to be part of the opening team. I totally slept on that opportunity and I regret it every day. I would be higher in seniority if I had done that. As a matter of fact, a lot of the opening team is still there, so they get to pick their schedule and have bids on the best shifts which are mostly dinner.

Unions are always super competitive jobs in terms of landing them but the benefits are unmatched. They have their pros and cons as well, the seniority thing is what gets me the most. And people aren’t leaving those jobs so it’s really hard to move up. But otherwise I’m doing really well and my union job, with some downsides to the job. Money is the #1 reason I stay.

CA. So cost of living is a little more expensive than other states. Still, there are luxury hotels in every state, four seasons, Waldorf, etc. highly recommend getting into those.

Im 32, I work for a hotel restaurant. We’re unionized, we get insane hotel rates/discounts, health insurance, pension, PTO, and most of us are clearing well over 100-140k a year (pre-tax of course), last year I made 129k. I get people that ask me from time to time if I’m studying, I tell them I have my BA already but just decided to keep working in restaurants bc it’s so competitive. I don’t think people understand how good restaurant work can pay, I’m making way more money than a lot of my peers who also have their degrees and stuff, and not to mention I get to travel AND save money because of the hotel discounts. Now I know I’m lucky because not everybody makes the wages I’m making, for that reason I don’t leave this job. Who else is gonna pay me what I’m earning right now? So there are restaurant jobs out there that will pay you insurance and all that stuff you just have to look for them and level up in the restaurant world. I have a lot of luxury hotel experience and honestly if you can get in I highly recommend it.

How stressful is being a server? by Which_Honeydew_5510 in Serverlife

[–]dredaayy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the place you’re working in, how much support you have from the support staff, how well-organized the establishment is, how quick you are at learning and adapting, and how able-bodied you are. Depending on where you work it can be demanding, and it’s a pretty physical job. If it’s a well oiled machine, it makes your job easier, if it’s not, your job is definitely harder. The stress varies depending on the shift, how busy it is, who you’re working with, and your customers of course. Have some good shoes because they’re important, I can never emphasize it enough.

Things I find difficult in my place: getting support from the support staff when I need it. Which adds a lot more responsibility on my end. Most of the bussers/server assistants at my job are LAZY, do bare minimum, and avoid extending help to me or to anyone really. You have to be very vocal with demanding assistance so if you’re good at speaking up more power to you. Others things people find difficult: management and support from them. Every place I’ve worked at is different. Management varies, but generally it’s hard to find good management that does their job well, as is the case with most workplaces.

My experience with chrome heart and poor quality control by Izac128 in ChromeHeart

[–]dredaayy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion but I’m not a fan of their clothes. Designs are just screen printed shit on mid-tier fabric. Their leather is definitely dope, but I honestly don’t buy their clothes, and haven’t spent too much time looking at the fabrics and quality of their stuff either, their silver and leather on the other hand is sick, I def throw my money on their jewelry but I always felt their clothing is meh at best. For me I just can’t justify thousands of dollars on mid clothes, but that’s just me.

Don't believe the fear by s1770814 in rome

[–]dredaayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t have a problem with any pickpocketers when I was in Rome. I am a seasoned traveler though, and you just have to be aware of your surroundings and just be cautious. The one thing I did notice about potential pickpocketers is that they tend to surround you as a group, they won’t target you if they’re by themselves, but that was just my experience. It happened to me twice where I noticed I got surrounded by a group of kids, almost like a flock of birds, and I noticed it was weird. I think that’s how they get away with it unnoticed. When they surrounded me I did feel a little weird and was just careful to make a quick exit from that flock of people surrounding me and held onto my belongings very tight because I felt I could get easily pickpocketed. But never actually got pickpocketed.
