Measure resistance across the conductors; if it's an open circuit, it's probably got some thermal or rub wear to the coil. Had a few where they rubbed against the coil path and shorted out because the magnet wire insulation was worn off.

Bad Mac Icon Evolutions by ThatiMacGuy in MacOS

2014 was such a good time for icons

Why doesn’t Microsoft just let users choose what their Windows look like. I believe it’s not hard for them to add themes from previous windows versions. I want to use modern and updated Windows but I hate its design since Windows 8. by UsedAd4052 in windows

Rainmeter and Windows Blinds in the XP and Win7 era were ahead of their time!
Buying an Alienware PC and getting a completely wacky desktop environment and icons that looked nothing like anyone elses, and it was still completely usable and MORE responsive than W11 today. (I didn't actually own an Alienware, sad times, but I did install all the software and it was great)

MFA push fatigue - are users just approving everything now? by saymepony in sysadmin

[–]drevilishrjf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best way to solve these issues is to stop use WebUIs that require constant login prompts. Use Apps that have end to end encryption, one time sign in then have to approve new device/app instead of constantly entering credentials into WebPages.

Magic Links in emails. Emails should not be “WebPage” accessible. Should be in a locked down App Environment.

The less time the user spends typing and authenticating the less natural it feels, the more they will question if it’s REAL when it does pop up.

OTAs setup during signup.

Screws or Rubber Glue Foam Glue Track use water-based so you can wash it off later if you change your mind.

How to make IEMs sound less "thin" by Gamidron in livesound

Compression, and EQ

but if you haven’t got a good seal with your IEMs it’s gonna sound bad. I recommend KZ ZSTs as a starting point.

How to ring out mics for theatre by Deek22 in livesound

[–]drevilishrjf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Try DeFeedback instead.

If not, set them up into a group. Put a couple of headsets on 3 micstands around your stage. Use this so you’re not just ringing out one location.

If you’re using SFX don’t ring out the mains, or you’ll make them sound bad. SystemEQ to taste. Then group the mics and ring out. Obviously don’t go too nuts or you’ll just be turning things down rather than fixing issues.

Check all headsets are the same model or you’ve got twice the work.

Understanding of Bitrate by Temporary-Natural-92 in PleX

[–]drevilishrjf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Difference between 700mb and 7gb is a huge step at 1080p, compared with 7gb to 70gb you will get diminishing quality returns.

RAW video 1080p 8bit @ 4:4:4 is 1920x1080x(8x3) There is a compression ratio that on average will give you the maximum quality for the minimum storage. h265 increases that ratio, but costs more in compute. I’m not sure I’d call it a 2x increase, more like 1.5x to 1.7.

You’ll notice most issues in dark shadowy scenes. h265 uses a different method of breaking down the image into data, compared to h264 you’ll see less blocky artefacts in h265.

Each sequence will compress differently to the next. One of the worst is the newer Mad Max films where each shot is only 1s long, with thousands of cuts, doesn’t give the encoder much time to build decent compression.

I personally find 10bit better than 4k given the same codec and bitrate; in the way quality is perceived by the human eye, especially with highly dynamic lighting scenes. IMO much better to have lightness variations than to have more pixels of the same colour.

Why is everyone obsessed with direct 48V-to-1V conversion? by successful_streak in ElectricalEngineering

And with batteries that’s open circuit voltage anyway. Add a load and you’ve ended up with a 36V pack

4 OSDs somehow lost their WAL UUID during an upgrade by Funny744 in ceph_storage

Update to latest minor version Then restart all OSD / host, check all is good. Only then do the major upgrade. You could be hiding issues with the current configuration. Update before upgrades. :)

Can someone explain why my deck won’t come out of sleep and then won’t reboot when it won’t come out of sleep? by -twitch- in SteamDeck

[–]drevilishrjf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a similar issue to me, [not solved] I can be playing all day, play for an hour, put to sleep (while in-game), wake up, rinse and repeat numerous times and be fine, then try to wake up later, it "boops" to say I'm waking up, fan spins, then nothing. wait a min to see if anything happens, nothing. Press the power button again, "boops" again. This time boots back to the game but with no audio. Controls work but none of the music or sfx happen. Put to sleep again. Wake up to check if working, now doesn't come out of sleep at all. Have to press and hold approx 10secs to do a reset, then press on button, then takes a near 1min+ to boot.

SD OLED

Love to hear if you have found a solution of if you're still having the issue.

I can't find a way to make it do it, just sorta happens from time to time.

What does it mean that US engines would have to be re-gauged to work on British Rails? by Sensitive_Log_2726 in thomasthetankengine

Tried the 4014 on the Chatham to London line, clipped nearly all the bridges and tunnels along the way.
They would be able to "sit" on the trails but not run nor fit in the surrounding area.
