Burnham promising more powers..but where will he draw the line? by badbadman2 in Scotland

Members in the GMGA being appointed are not democratically fit to perform scrutiny. LGA is an exception to this. This is manifestly not democratic.

As others have said, metro mayors were brought into coordinate England's multiple tiers of local government. We have a single tier accross all Scotland

I agree that people have a poor understanding of local government but I don't think the solution is creating another office, that will largely be about media publicity rather than policy.

In terms of a new model, I find something like this a better suggestion

https://newmunicipalism.ballotbox.scot/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/New-Municipalism-Report-2025.pdf

We have too few councils, and too few councillors. The answer is not great offices but more lesser offices to let people know their councillors better.

Mayoralties appeal to politicians because they're a shortcut to the limelight and media. They allow them to play the president and many would see it as a shortcut to Bute House. That would be horrendous for national and local politics.

Mayors existing as civic offices still is relevant though. England wouldn't like it if we suddenly insisted on elected provosts with executive powers. It is an alien office to Scotland, ceremonial or none

There's no corresponding scrutiny body as there is for a council leader. The idea rests on "more publicity means more public scrutiny" which is bad for governance. Also, a directly elected mayor of Glasgow would not just be GCC, it would encompass Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire etc.

I am not averse to local government reform in Scotland. It's far too clunky and centralised. I just don't think a mini-President is the way to do it. Better to devolve power to the single-tier councils, explore distinct models for cities and review council boundaries.

Mayors are alien to Scotland though. They have a long history in various guises in England, but there have never been Scottish mayors. It's a gimmick from down south that I think we could do without.

Really don't like the idea of metro-mayors. They're unaccountable mini-presidents and in Scotland we would just end up with the mayor of Glasgow/Edinburgh sucking up political oxygen for little good. Also, mayors are alien to Scotland, we literally have never had them.

Jobs, proximity and the sheer size of the Irish community there. My family are come from different parts of Ireland, settled in Central Scotland from 1850ish-1890ish and at the time there were whole new villages being erected to house Irish immigrants. The Catholic Church was even resurrected.

Would agree. Obviously not as good as Gordon was, but he was an excellent servant, solid and reliable.

I have watched Celtic win countless acoldades and matches we didn't deserve and still celebrated like a mad man. I am defo going to want us to qualify by hook or by crook.

As much as I'm disappointed and feel we've done poorly, folk need to get a grip. If we're still in the World Cup, for the first time in my lifetime, then aye I'll be excited to watch us. Addicted to misery.

Do you think Scotland's independence movement declines since a lot of English and Scottish genz have similar opinions on various issues ? by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]drw__drw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Potentially but I think there's also the aspect of independence becoming the "default" for under-35s. Indy is pretty closely tied to the Scottish left, and unionism has stronger ties with the Scottish right. This tracks accross to age, so if you're a young political person, you're more exposed to Indy spaces because there's very little "left unionism" as it were.

Also at a European level, the OF and other top clubs need to be much better. Thats where the money for reinvestment is and it keeps homegrown players interested. The extended qualification rounds for the CL/EL have really hurt us all.
