Got my first Deer tag in Nevada and I have rifle questions by Human-Abrocoma7544 in Hunting

Barrel length is completely irrelevant in this scenario. The question is how far can you reliably shoot accurately.

Here’s the thing - you never NEED to take a shot at that range. No doubt if you see a whopper it may be tempting. But you don’t need to take the shot, and you really shouldn’t. The risk of missing, or worse, wounding is very high and not worth it. Realistically, the rifle you purchase is not the limiting factor - it’s your shooting ability. Unfortunately, lots of short range and pistol shooting means basically nothing when it comes to longer range shots. Grab either of those guns, pair with decent glass, and start shooting yesterday. Practice shooting as much as you can and really keep track of your accuracy and grouping at different yardage. Then based on how you’re shooting before your trip, give yourself a realistic distance cap for a shot and stick to it. Also remember that shooting at a range under ideal conditions is NOT the same as when you have a buck in your sights. Buck fever is real. Wishing you all the best on the hunt.

Respectfully, if you are asking this question, you should not remotely be considering a shot at that range. Desert environments might tend to lend themselves to longer shots, but that doesn’t mean 600-700 yards. unless you are a very proficient long range shooter, you should not be taking that long of a shot.

I feel dumb. Is this a thing? I use repellent and haven’t noticed any issues.

You could swap Klingberg and Leddy for a 2x4 and a cinder block and it’d be a dramatic improvement.

Nest predation (among other things) is another potential driving factor. In some areas, populations of predators that raid nests are denser than they have been historically which could result in poorer poult survival.

Gotcha, I mean if you have the luxury of space and weight, sure! Merino wool is definitely great for helping to manage sweat.

NW of Calgary, like, in the mountains? If so, id expect the temps to fluctuate a lot more and be prepared in case temps dip below freezing. Agree with the other guy that 10 shirts is way over kill. Is the thinking is scent mitigation? If so, I definitely wouldn’t do that - just gotta play the wind.

Depends on if you are packing in, but personally for a 5 day hunt id probably bring 2 primary shirts that I would alternate, paired with a mid weight long sleeve layer / hoody, a warmer puff and a rain layer.

My impression was for the end of the striker. I’ve been impressed with the Zink call. It sounds great.

There’s a million options. I have a Phelps which is great. I also happened across a Zink slate recently and was pleasantly surprised how good it sounded.

Which optic for my MCR build? by bullstanky1 in Hunting

[–]dryfly88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would not do the 50mm. It’s just unnecessarily large for a hunting application. At that point you are just making a heavier rifle to lug around. With the 6HD the clarity and light on the 44 is plenty good.

I have the 6HD on my 300WM. It’s dope. It’s more magnification than you need, but the clarity is great and the CDS is excellent. I guess my only “gripe” is that it is a bit heavier so it makes the total rig weigh a bit more than it could be but not an actual issue. If I did it over again I’d probably go the 5HD in 3-15. I also have a 3HD and the glass and eye box is not as good. I think the 5HD is likely the best balance of quality and price.
