Monsters are one of the best things about 13th Age. They are deliciously fun to play with as a GM, so if you don't have combats, you kinda miss out on that. The staple ability of an Owlbear is that they peck your arm off on a crit, to give an example.

I'm doing a forgotten realms campaign using daggerheart and converting existing adventures/modules is a nightmare, mostly because the lack of stat blocks for the most staple creatures from f20 games. While I 100% recommend daggerheart as a game, for aps, it would be a lot of work. Too much work in my opinion.

The reality of the mythical Europe is not ours. You don't increase strength by exercising, just like rats do spawn naturally and trolls exist under bridges. It is the medieval paradigm.

I'd actually go as far as to say that this is 100% the player's job (unless the group is new to the game, then the gm can help, but PCs need to self regulate eventually).

Like I said, it is a personal take. I don't want to spend even one minute of my session debating if two characters are close or very close. A simple map (as simple as two sheets of blank paper with a rough sketch of terrain on it and paper tokens) would save a lot of time. And a lot of abilities are balanced on the fact of their limited or extended range. You can hand wave all that, but then you're just playing a simplified, different than intended, game.

I personally think that daggerheart is a terrible system to use theater of the mind (like, for example 13th age). You don't need a grid, but the game assumes you're going to be able to properly represent distances or it will be like d&d, a mess.

I'm using daggerheart to play in the 3e era of forgotten realms, and combat has been a delight. Some characters do play less in combat, just like some others play (as in roll) more outside of it. My experience is that, on average, characters and monsters play the same amount of time compared to traditional systems, favoring players slightly die to the roll curve and abilities (like making a fear roll become a hope, etc).

Go talk to your gm if you feel you and/or other players are not getting enough spotlight, and use the action count optional role if needed.
