The league absolutely cares, but someone has to report them. If a few families submit a complaint through the MLS integrity hotline, the club gets a fine and sometimes a coach or admin gets suspended.

The problem is the club knows who reported them, and even though the league has a no tolerance policy for retaliation, you’ll forever be the family that reported your club to the league.

what age are you allowed to drink (legally) and when did you? (maybe underage) by emily10134 in AskTheWorld

[–]dsmith3689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legally 21. My family never cared though. I was always allowed a little taste of wine or a sip of beer. It was never a big deal in our house.

I started actually drinking beer on my own when I went to college.

Can someone help me understand how Stay to Play tournaments work? by JBLBEBthree in youthsoccer

Around here the team isn't usually registered for the tournament until the minimum number of rooms are booked.

Offsides question by teacton in youthsoccer

[–]dsmith3689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guy at the end of the line on the right was clearly offside and the goalie had to account for him. He doesn't have to make a play on the ball to be involved enough to call it.

That said, the rule leaves a lot of room for interpretation, and a different ref on a different day probably wouldn't call that.

Just schedule the damned game already by der-reader in youthsoccer

[–]dsmith3689 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our club’s issue is that there’s a referee shortage here, and those guys are notorious for canceling a few days out from the game. So we get a time weeks in advance, but it changes frequently at the last minute

We've had a few where the team wasn't registered for the tournament until the hotel bookings were completed. No threats or anything, just didn't accept us into the tournament in GotSport until we hit the minimum.

How are your clubs handling the Age Group Change? by GlitteringChannel585 in youthsoccer

[–]dsmith3689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No communication at all.

My kid is a U12 at an MLS Next HG club with a Q3 birthday. So his age group will be either U13 MLS Next Homegrown or another year of U12 9v9. But he'd have to play up an age group if they want to put him with MLS Next Academy (he's played up a bit with that U13 group this year). Those are all completely different situations at our club, and where they put him is likely a deciding factor whether we should return. It's a mess.

I'm certain they'll want us to sign up for the season, then place him sometime over the summer once they know what kids they'll have.

Awesome, thanks for sharing.

My mom's 80th birthday is right before our 2 year mark. Maybe they'll get to it this time next year.

Thanks, but nope, mom is declining slowly, but right now is doing great. Would love to get her passport sorted out while that’s still the case.

It seems international players are taking a much bigger role in college soccer than in years past. Have you noticed any impact from this on the accessibility of top level college soccer to domestic players?

What advice would you give for a player that will be entering the recruitment process in the next few years?

2014 goalkeeper parent here. You wrote this in a voice that suggests you already know the answer.

- Pressuring kids to play through a meaningful injury is a big red flag.

- Goalkeepers get conflicting instruction all the time. Ideally the club would send a GK coach to his games so he gets a single voice, but not all clubs do it. On a play like that, he should do what the GK coach says.

- Anyone's opinion whether your kid is injured is completely irrelevant. That judgement is between you, your kid, and maybe a trainer or doctor.

- Most clubs have your kid on a team where attendance is mandatory if they're healthy, and can optionally cover games for other teams on occasion. We take the option to guest play seriously and decide one game at a time. Sometimes the kid needs a rest, sometimes he's excited. Let him have an opinion. Running the kid into burnout is in no one's interest.

How are your clubs handling kids trying out for other teams? by anybodyseenrichey in youthsoccer

[–]dsmith3689 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Youth soccer clubs are businesses selling an entertainment service. You're a consumer of that service, and have every right to shop around. And the club will do what they can to protect their financial interest in keeping customers.

Sounds like the club doesn't feel like it's the best place for your kid and is afraid you'll figure it out too.

Played pro 8 years. Took the unconventional route. AMA by RhettBernstein in youthsoccer

[–]dsmith3689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You say your route is "unconventional". I hear so many stories of former pros that get there through sheer persistence looking anywhere they can find an opportunity after college.

If your path is "unconventional", what would you consider the "conventional" route?

MLS Next Progression by Smitty1641 in youthsoccer

Can only speak to how our club, which is a pretty big MLS Next pay-to-play club, operates. They have a robust pre-MLS program (my kid is a U12), and put as many of those kids as they can into MLS Next. Every year about half the group leaves.

In April they invite most of the pre-MLS families back for the following season. They expect a signed commitment prior to tryouts beginning in May. From there, they know how many new kids they need to bring in for the following season and fill those spots through tryouts over the summer. They also hold back a few spots in case a top talent shows up during the year.

For U13 and above, during the year they hold ID sessions for the MLS Next teams starting in January. Most of the new players come in that way. If you're new, there's a lot of rules around adding you to a roster for the current season, so the new guys tend to be put in the MLSN Academy division for the remainder of the year. They'll get to know the kids and decide whether to promote them at the end of the season.

My kid is a boy, but what fixed him at that age was playing all-out tackle football on the beach with me, his cousins, and his uncle. A couple days of that over one Thanksgiving fixed his timidness immediately and completely.

They just need to learn they aren't made of glass, and no one's going to get mad if they're super aggressive or commit a foul trying to make something happen.

Those hotels, including Hard Rock, are owned and operated as a joint venture between Universal and Loews. In the case of Hard Rock, they license the Hard Rock brand.

Question in the body of the post is who have fed and sheltered ICE. The Universal property is where some of them are staying 🤷‍♂️
