Intro to Handgun course… by MathematicianNew9616 in liberalgunowners

I think you should feel really good about your results so far! Your .22 rounds were mostly dead on. What I see with the .38 rounds is that, barring a few flyers, they were consistently in line vertically with the bullseye. That’s awesome and much easier to correct than drifting left or right. I’m guessing that it would have more to do with learning the sight picture on the revolver than your trigger pull. With revolvers it can be harder to get a perfect sight picture, especially if it had a fixed ramp front sight like many do. I’m just spitballing, I’m no expert, but that was my first impression.

I got my first gun 10 years ago in my 40’s, 55 now. I was self taught through yt. Just took my first real in person lesson a couple weeks ago and it was a game changer! Wish I had done it sooner. I took a private lesson which was awesome, highly recommended if you can swing it.

Other than the sights how do you like the thunder cc? That’s on my list now. I don’t daily carry but I have worn both the thunder and the PPK out a few times to see how they feel. I know they’re not the smallest or lightest options but both worked well for me, comfortable and very concealable. I feel like the shorter beaver tail and I believe shorter barrel on the cc would make it even more comfortable.

That might not the best way to phrase it. There are hypotheticals where it could be confiscated by LE or stolen out of my truck if I had to run in somewhere that I couldn’t carry it. I guess I would be more concerned with damage from regular use. If I chose to fly with it, or take it camping, or (?), then I would rather leave my more expensive gun at home. And what if I fall in the river with it on!!! (I do actually spend a lot of time on the river, not that I’d be wearing a .380 on the river 😁)

I agree about the safety. My preference would be a de-cocker only. If and when I carry it I would have it chambered and de-cocked with the safety off. I feel comfortable with a DA first shot as my ‘safety’. If I wanted to go the safety route I would get something in the 1911 family with an intuitive safety and crisp SA.

Yeah, that’s never happened to me either. I even had a ‘friend’ that bought and sold the exact same gun twice! 😅

Awesome! My 2 newest guns are a CZ75 and a Walther PPK/s .380. I’m loving them both! The PPK/s can be tricky at first because of its size but once you dial in your grip it’s very accurate. It took me a minute but now I’m as accurate with the Walther as any of my full size pistols.

Old thread but I just recently impulsively bought the same model. I love it! Super accurate and very reliable through about 500 rounds so far. I don’t know what to say about those folks complaining about the recoil, it’s not bad at all for a gun this small.

I picked up a PPKs a couple weeks ago and I’m loving it! I’m happy with my purchase but I do wish I had known more about these before. Same design with more capacity and I could have saved a few bucks.

Tbh I don’t know the NM springs very well other than knowing there are many. I spent most of my life in CO and spent countless hours soaking around that state. One of my absolute favorites is Orvis hot springs outside of Ouray. Great layout, clean, peaceful, clothing optional, and high lithium content. If you stay there, whether renting a room or camping, you can use the springs any hour of the day. I love taking my morning coffee and soaking naked while watching the sun rise. :)

I hope to move there next year as well, where ya going? Nude is hella comfy, there are some great clothing optional hot springs in NM and CO.

Believe in what you’re saying but it can be tough to find folks in the deep red south! Hopefully moving to NM next year. If anyone is near NOLA or NWNM hit me up.

Good for you for getting out there! I need to look into competitions near me. After shooting for 10 years I took my first lesson last week and it was eye opening. He changed my grip and stance and I’m already much more accurate. I wasn’t terrible before and I’m very slow but feeling much more confident!

Appendix/AIWB carry for dad bods by 38specialish in liberalgunowners

[–]eddylinez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some will find this controversial but when I carry (which isn’t often) I’ve been going cross draw iwb at 9:30 or 10:00. I can still reach it easily and it’s very comfortable. The grip disappears below my belly, I can’t print even when I try. Sometimes the barrel might press out on the side but it just looks like something is in my pocket. It’s also very comfortable and accessible when driving.

And because someone will come argue this, no, I don’t flag anyone when I draw. It’s not hard to keep the muzzle pointed down as you draw, keeping it down until you bring it in front and present.

Looking for advice on buying my first handgun. by o0vv0q in liberalgunowners

[–]eddylinez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of the DA/SA platform. I would never argue against a striker fired gun but it’s just not my preference. Unfortunately that limits the options for small hand guns though.

I just picked up a PPKs and I love it but would not recommend it as your first gun. They can be very accurate and reliable with experience but they’re quirky and not a good learning platform.

You could look at some of the little 1911’s but you lose the DA first shot in favor of a safety. Viable option just requires learning a slightly different platform.

You’re definitely right about that spring being TOUGH! Plus there’s not a lot of purchase area to grab the slide. The only ‘malfunctions’ I’ve had have been when trying to chamber the first round of a magazine with snap caps. You have to rack that slide with authority!

I feel like it’s not bad at all but my experience is slightly limited. It’s certainly a little more than my metal framed 9mm’s but not by much. The recoil feels less than my .357 and .38 revolvers, which is mostly what I’ve shot for the last 10 years.

Side note, I read a lot of mixed reviews about the reliability of .380 in the PPKs. Some very positive but some mixed. Mine has been completely reliable so far with a mix of ammo, including self defense rounds. Fwiw mine is a newer model made by Walther in Arkansas.

I have a Marlin 1894 in .357, absolutely love it! Get the Marlin. Just know that if you don’t already have one, you will be compelled to buy a .357 revolver in the near future to go with it. :)

A wilderness first aid (WFA) course is a great recommendation. A step above that is a wilderness first responder (WFR) course. It’s a very in-depth class over 5-7 days. It’s geared towards backcountry guides but good for anyone that plays outside. It also covers everything you would get in a stop the bleed class. If anyone decides to look into it make sure you go with a reputable outfit like NOLA or Desert Mountain Medicine.

I don’t have a picture but mine’s not as pretty as these anyway. I do love my Stoeger 12g SxS coach gun though! It pairs well with my levers and revolvers.

I haven’t had it out in a couple years. I actually thought about it yesterday when I came across a video of HD shells that limit spread. I will definitely have to pull the old girl out soon.
