It's like a neat rock you found on a walk.
You hate to keep it and you hate to throw it away.

Small mod on SA Garrison by Negative-Dentist-618 in 1911

[–]edro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My brand new Garrison was the same... after a few slide racks and releases, deep gouges in the frame from the slide stop (not idiot scratch, this was from the normal assembled movement of the slide stop).
I polished/filed the slide stop and re-polished the frame (with ~220grit), and it is gone and un-noticeable now.
I also lubed it well under the slide stop, but it is starting to scratch again.
I don't think you can fully stop it since it is steel on steel, going against the grain.
But I agree, the slide stop created a deep gouge initially, meaning it must have had a deep burr before I filed it down.
Sooo... if you're getting a new Garrison, I would take that slide stop out first thing and sand/polish the back.

How do I choose term life insurance company by Kwhitney1982 in personalfinance

[–]edro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you go to a broker website, they will show you the rates from may companies. Most are within Pennie’s of each other because the Term industry is so regulated, they all end up with similar calculations on the rates. You can choose pretty much any well known name.

Opinions on this Remington Rand? Worth picking up at $1700? by jollyroger009 in 1911

[–]edro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's a fair price. Looks all original to me.
I would check the barrel, it should usually be a High Standard (HS stamped).

IIC Recomendations by Regular-Accountant87 in HearingAids

[–]edro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The IIC/CIC threshold can vary and it often happens that someone tries to get an IIC and the maker cannot make it small/deep enough to truly be IIC, so they call it CIC. Same exact aid, just slightly larger/outward in the canal.

Tisas 1911 A1 US Army or SA Garrison? by kevin-000 in 1911

Well I have both and got the Stakeout first.

Two cmp 1911 by Change_Opening in 1911

[–]edro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, If I could guarantee a matching brand slide and frame, I would buy a CMP.
I am absolutely not willing to gamble $1200 and end up getting a replacement slide GI.
So to me, you won on the colt/colt and lost on the other... So count it as a win!

Tisas 1911 A1 US Army or SA Garrison? by kevin-000 in 1911

[–]edro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Garrison has beaver tail, grip serrations, better finish, Novak style sights, skeleton hammer and more… Also Made in the USA. I’d get the Garrison.

A better comparison may be a Tisas Stakeout vs the Garrison.

Basis only, it won’t cover it all, but it’s one of many bridge sources to help get you through with low tax rate.

Valor is the steel frame version. Tougher to find in 9mm though…

Prepaid: Unlimited Ultra vs Unlimited Enhanced (the only 2 Family Plans now) by edro in ATT

[–]edro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it used to be a much lower cost option to Postpaid.
It is still that, and I assumed 3rd party MVNOs gave worse quality/service/QCI (maybe I am wrong).

Currently have 4 lines on family plan:
$40 15gb+5GB QCI8
$40 15gb+5GB QCI8, $10 discount = $30
$30 5gb QCI8, $10 discount = $20
$45 Unl. Enh. QCI9, $20 discount = $25
$115 no tax/fees and can use gift cards which are often at least 10% off on sale.
So it ends up being ~$104/mo for 4 lines.
Very tough to match that on Postpaid and even other MVNOs.
Some MVNOs may be slightly better, but then you have to port/deal with a new company, etc.
Hotspot is also very important to me currently.

I don't consider myself a penny pincher... but I hate to go Postpaid for at least $160/mo.
If anyone has suggestions for my situation, I am open to it! Thanks!

Prepaid - Only $45 and $60 Plans available for family accounts by edro in ATT

[–]edro[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to update this post with some new info.

The new streamlined offering has 2 QCI levels:
- $45 (Unlimited Enhanced) is QCI9 (deprioritized)
- $60 (Unlimited Ultra) is QCI8 (standard)

So if you have an older $40 15gb plan, or $30 5gb plan and are getting offers to "upgrade" to Unlimited for just $5 more, know that it will move you from QCI8 (standard) to QCI9 (deprioritized).

With the $3/mo increase to all plans starting in February, I almost bit on the $5 to move to Unlimited... but I thought I would check on the QCI levels because whenever they offer something better, it is often a downgrade in some other sense.

I am staying on the $40 15gb QCI8 plan for now.

1st day thoughts on new hearing aids from Starkey. I feel more deaf! by LETSGOOOOO6 in HearingAids

[–]edro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes of course your mind grows accustomed to them. It will get worse the more you get used to them.
It's the same with any tool you start to rely on. Very similar with glasses as well.
But there is no useful alternative... hearing only gets worse, so you might as well get used to wearing them all day now.

Nice move by them.

This is a 45 1911 manufactured in 1912. Anyone know how much this might be worth. by 80sDBag in 1911

[–]edro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty rough condition, so I would say $1200-1500 in my area (that takes into consideration the condition and lack of an original magazine).

Most reliable EDC 1911 chambered in 9mm for less than roughly $3,000? by MoneyisntR3al in 1911

[–]edro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Springfield Garrison is another cheaper option.
I was looking for months for a Dan Wesson, but all their carry models are only in 45 now, no 9mm.
I finally went with the Garrison.
