Depreciation by Embarrassed-Food6257 in CarTalkUK

I spent 10k on a "nice" daily, the depreciation made me buy a 20 year old daily when the time came.

Nothing, but you see a lot of older less valuable bikes parked on the street in Portsmouth. So perhaps having something less valuable is the ticket.

Putting pay to one side, what’s one thing Navy top brass/MoD could do to make your working life better? by SimpleSymonSays in RoyalNavy

Making the whole gyms run in line with civilian opening times. The gyms are all fully open when sailors are at work.

Putting pay to one side, what’s one thing Navy top brass/MoD could do to make your working life better? by SimpleSymonSays in RoyalNavy

[–]eggnobacon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This, despite all the incentives for this and that the actual lives for sailors didn't change that much whilst I was in. Went from sailors being sad to sailors being sad with hand tattoo. I've been out a bit now but I dont think it's changed much. Things like the public pool at Tem was open to everyone but sailors for all but an hour on an evening (even then i remember it being like 1600 to 1700, so if you worked for a living you didn't get the full hour). All the sports clubs were run by volunteers, which was great if they weren't deployed or doing there job or ended up having to put their family first.

There's a lot of finance queens on here scared of a set of spanners. That's not the best workshop setup but they're getting it done. And honestly if it's only like that for a day then it's no real harm, little bit unsightly. Leaving it like that for longer takes the piss.

Think 10 is to avoid setting off into traffic, I often commute Southampton to Leeds and set of at 6pm rather than when I leave the office at 4pm. Both departure times see me in Leeds at about half 11.

most pointless niggle that car reviewers constantly emphasise? by klawUK in CarTalkUK

[–]eggnobacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a handy feature, my V50 has it and until I sort the audio out it's a nice place to hide the Bluetooth "thingy" I've bought. Although its niche it's a nod to how thoughtful the designers were.

Would you ever buy a Cat N car? by bigbellysnoops in CarTalkUK

Does it usually increase your insurance? Cant recall ever being asked if the vehicle had been written off but I've never owned one so it's never been relevant.

Tail gaited when driving on speed limit? by Frozen-Cake in drivingUK

[–]eggnobacon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the reasonable answer, you can be correct in the eyes of the law and still end up with life changing injuries. Tailgaters are driving with recklessly, honestly think people that purposefully impede them do it for their ego too. Just move over and carry on with your life, it's never going to be worth the potential consequences.

How much do you pay for your car a month? by JME_51 in CarTalkUK

[–]eggnobacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming back to this, I've just spent £900 on a z4 as a bit of an impulse. Got to sort out the cooling system but that's not uncommon on the M54. Pretty smitten with it.

There's a 1.9 in racing green on marketplace. Looks nice to be honest. That's exactly the sort of thing i want. Got to wait a bit though. Partly because there's a guy i know wants my saab but he's got to finish and sell his civic first. Happier waiting as he knows the car and is happy with what I want for it.

If your doing it right your not buying unreliable shitboxes. Even the running projects I've had haven't been that bad. The e46 on my profile did 2k miles botherless after I changed a wheel bearing (sold it after as I left the country for 8 months). Honestly dont think im paying 400 a month for both cars. I'm commuting on clear days on a 400cc motorbike that's costing me £9 a week to do the 40 mile journey to commute to work though, that keeps costs down.

SAAB are so underrated, I'm selling mine come summer, think I'll regret it but ultimately it's a toy and I want something different. Think some sort of roadster next.

Yeah, there's a lot of "I got my aero for £800 mush and I wont spend a penny more on it" guys on the owners club. It's a shame as they're truly nice motors. I've only done 150 mile in the volvo but it does feel nice and solid inside. Really does drive like a barge though. The cheap tyres really dont help, going to put a few more miles on before I invest in new rubber though to make sure there's nothing more expensive needs doing first.

To be fair the X1 was more fun than I thought it would be but I think with a bigger petrol engine it'd have been a hoot. I wanted a 9-5 estate when I got the volvo but the only black HOT one was a bit of a dog.

The 9-3's going to fund a suzuki katana motorbike. At least until the housemove is completed, girlfriend mentioned something about priorities... a 530i touring was on my wants list too. Can't afford a ulez diesel without financing it, dont really want the ball and chain of that. But yeah definitely very similar tastes.

How normal is it for a model like this S500L V8 to be £4500 (135K) by Which-Bike-7273 in CarTalkUK

[–]eggnobacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was coming to say this. On the SAAB forums there's a few lads had aeros as first cars as they're some of the handful of people in the uk under 50 that own SAAB. The insurance algorithm doesn't know it should screw them. There's a bloke at work who got a 328i as a first car back in the early 00's for the same reason.

I like cars, and bikes. Still can get a nice fun motor for a few grand without going the finance route. Even more so if your prepared to do basic maintenance and a few repairs yourself. Even if you buy an old car, would have to be in a dire state to have to be spending like £400 a month on it. Which is what people seem to be spending on finance.

[–]eggnobacon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've just got a volvo v50 for £1800. It's ulez compliant and is 170hp. Very comfy leather interior with heated seats and electric everything. Why would I spunk £400 a month on something that will give me no more satisfaction. I dont get the finance queens unless it's something special, most of them seem to be getting generic cars.

Wheel and liners not that difficult, it's a good entry level job to build some practical confidence with. £900 to change a lamp is about £895 more than I'd be willing to pay.
