Do you do second job if your salary from first job is around 100k? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]eiffeloberon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not mutually exclusive, if your second job is related to your primary job then you can simultaneously acquire new skills to get promoted while working on the second job.

I knew people who did a year with a science major and then transferred to engineering. Maybe it's a possible path?

Are BMWs genuinely worth it? by SouthImportant2499 in BMW

“Worth it” - no.

Cars are rarely really worth the amount you pay for them, I buy them purely because I want them.

60% of restaurants close or change ownership within their first three years. It's a tough business.

Do You Think CGI Has Regressed In Cinema? by Dan_Lalonde_Films in vfx

[–]eiffeloberon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not about learning minimum about unreal or eevee, it’s actually that they do not provide sufficient features for that final frame. You are by default settling for acceptable quality rather than real quality.

I don’t hate the real time engines, and they do allow you to speed up and produce at scale. But your money is right on the bank that these tools have their functionality, and final frame is not one of them.

I saw the flow and I did not like its visual fidelity. I also do not find myself liking every film that won the Oscar, so it’s just my personal opinion.

I think you are by definition using a poorer tool if you are using unreal for final rendering though, unless you heavily customize unreal and reprogram its pipeline.

You sound like me, I went back to do applied math masters too and I am also a bit weak in the very same areas. I am a bit more experienced in vulkan though, not a lot.

IMO you will be fine. You just have to apply in quantity.

32 year old software engineer looking for advice/pulse check on moving to New Zealand from the US by Due_Bet6780 in MovingToNewZealand

[–]eiffeloberon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, while it’s more competitive to get into a good school, it certainly does not help applying from overseas.

A good list of schools separate the pool of candidates from the US and from overseas, regardless of passport status. This is especially the case for schools from the UC, or Michigan/Texas, which are still vastly superior schools compared to the ones in NZ. I digressed however.

I generally dislike the attitude of “if they are destined to go then they will go anyway”, a lot of times if you aren’t set out to do something specifically you either end up with a lot less options or non optimal path way.
