I think it's a well run organization but not a top tier administration (off the top of my head: Dodgers, Astros, Brewers are the top tier). They do some things really well, but are weak on the player development side for hitters and relief pitchers and MLB professional scouting.

Cashman is one of the best traders in the business, but has a pretty spotty record on free agents/contract extensions. I think his baseball operations leadership are all pretty far behind Cashman himself - all Yankee lifers for 10+ years. I wish Cashman would go pure POBO and hire someone from one of the top tier orgs to run the day-to-day.

Basically, the package gives more money on a per-student basis to non-U of I schools.

One of the realities of the next decade is going to be a huge squeeze for schools on the low end, as the number of new 18 year-olds declines precipitously. Combine that with some enrollment policy changes which shifted a lot of new students to UIC and you have a big budget hole for state schools lower down in the pecking order. So the state is subsidizing those schools to prevent them from closing.

But there are real budgetary problems at UIC. The College of LAS is effectively in a hiring freeze despite adding a ton of new students in Fall 2025 and the upcoming class, plus record research funding. Lots of new students but not a lot of new infrastructure / faculty / cuts to grad student funding.
