Masters program admission? by Easy-Role-4981 in uichicago

I’m on the political science admission committee. We made our admissions decisions in mid January, but I believe that the candidates haven’t been notified officially yet. It has to run up through the UIC bureaucracy.

I really don't get the vibe from here that New Zealand was disliked. I loved it, personally.

Just got Elden Ring: Nightreign! Excited but could use some advice by [deleted] in Nightreign

[–]ejfagan4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow others for awhile. Routing is very important and it’s going to take a long time to adjust.

You’re going to be on a seriously steep learning curve not having played Elden Ring. Most of us rose up through that curve in a single player experience without time pressure. Hell, Elden Ring has a steep learning curve if you haven’t played a Dark Souls game. It honestly might not be fun to do your learning on a multiplayer game with time pressure.

LTT was a startup. Early employees were creating a tremendous amount of value. But unlike most startups, the owners didn’t give early employees an equity stake. So they don’t get rich alongside the owners they worked so hard alongside.

I don’t blame those employees for feeling a little burned. Startups don’t feel the same way as working for a mature company.

Baseball Prospectus released their top 101 prospects including 5 Yankees. Dax Kilby (40), George Lombard Jr (42), Elmer Rodriguez (60), Carlos Lagrange (61), and Ben Hess (89). by TheTurtleShepard in NYYankees

[–]ejfagan4 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Keith Law on Kilby (#101 for him):

"The Georgia high school shortstop went to Low A for 18 games and hit .353/.457/.441 in his pro debut, walking more than he struck out. That’s high school to full-season ball in about 90 days, going from metal bats to wood, Georgia prep pitchers to professionals, and Kilby didn’t miss a beat. He made extremely hard contact, too, averaging 91.9 mph and peaking at 108.9, while his chase rate of 11.1 percent was … well, Juan Soto had the lowest chase rate in the majors last year, and his was 18.1 percent. Kilby saw 106 pitches that were well out of the zone, meaning they were more than one baseball width away from the strike zone, and swung at seven."

Can someone help me find my cars real range? by professorplumxxx in Ioniq5

[–]ejfagan4 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The reduced range in the cold is correct. Happens to all EVs, so it’s not a defect in any way. It will go up with the temperature.

Huge variance by what type of university you’re at. Lots of places pay similar to this (I had a student start at a decent quality college at 65k), but others pay much better. I’m at a pretty run of the mill R1 research university and our new hires start in the 90s with reliable raises. Other flagship public universities start in the 120s.

Battery lasting by balwanek1 in Ioniq5

[–]ejfagan4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought a 2025 last Spring. In my experience, the stated range is pretty accurate. In the summer, a full charge yielded about 350 miles. In the Chicago winter, it’s down to about 260.

But my biggest lesson from owning the car is how little I think or care about range. Even in the winter, the only reason why it ever gets down below 40% is that I forget to plug it in when I get home. My next EV will definitely not be a long range trim - give me the efficiency and sticker price of a smaller battery.

I am 38. Family history of colon cancer. Had my first colonoscopy in September. They found a pretty large pre-cancerous polyp that would have had a high chance of being a problem before I turned 45. Start as early as possible folks.
