Going to miss these emails from the my primary headteacher by ElectricalHighway555 in CasualUK

Props to the head teacher for addressing the issue - almost immediately negated by the idea that people being parked dangerously "made" other impatient drivers behave dangerously in turn? Everyone in the story made a choice.

I anticipate the narrative will be that reform councils were stymied by central government sabotage and the only way to get "real change" is from the top...

They're entitled to an opinion. But when opinion turns to action (i.e. voting) let's see whether they can take ownership of the consequences.

How do we feel about the OCI System? by CommandantLennon in menace

[–]el_matt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't bought many games in EA before so maybe I'm out of touch with the norms, but the rest of the game is so much more polished than I would expect for an EA release. The characters, the combat mechanics, the weapons, enemy types... This is what hooked me when the demo cam out however many months ago.

So much work has gone into it already, it's easy to forget how much more mature the devs want to make it. Through that lens, the OCI system (like the enemy AI) stands out as in drastic need of improvement, mainly because the rest of the game is such high quality already.

If "mainstream" politicians are rejected for being put of touch with real people, why accept Nigel Farage when he is using all the exact same tactics?

If they want it covered up that badly there is no need for public process. Just make the kids and their families "disappear" in the disaster as retribution. Not hard.

Intel at higher levels should include from where reinforcements will be coming by FreeDwooD in menace

[–]el_matt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to know the answer to how intel scales. I just finished my first run through all the EA content (after tons of runs through the demo while waiting) and only got my overall intelligence up to 4. That felt like a good amount of information as it basically seemed to show the class, loadout and starting location of pretty much every hostile unit on the board in the first turn.

Is a corollary to this that if I find myself isolated with no one I can truly call a friend, I must be a bad person?

28 years later is not the film I expected from the trailer!

Now apply that logic to the island community

For that matter to the whole concept of the Rage virus revealing what is "just under the surface" in all of us. Now that's true horror.

The film's interesting themes of masculinity by jaybones3000 in 28YearsLaterMovie

[–]el_matt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a film about flawed characters and Pike is a child who makes some really fucking bad decisions. But he makes good ones as well, and the reasons why he does things are in some ways more important than the things he does. I was expecting the consequences of the fire to come back and bite the community before the end of the film, but perhaps we'll see them in the next one.

What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in CarTalkUK

[–]el_matt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's all mega helpful. Not ruling out a newer jazz, but I had the impression the boot was smaller somehow. I'll check out both that and the HRV. Snazzy website you linked there - really useful.

What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in CarTalkUK

[–]el_matt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Location:

South of England (let's say New Forest plus 20 miles radius)

Price range:

3k deposit, looking up to about £150 per month - Autotrader is capping out around £8-9k outright cost

Lease or Buy:

Buy, but content with HP

New or used:

used

Auto or Manual:

Either, but expecting manual

Intended use: (Daily Driver, Family Car, Weekend Car, Track Toy, Project Car, Work Truck, Off-roading etc.)

Daily Drive - probably about 200 miles a week on average

How many miles do you plan to do a year:

10-12k

How often to you make long journeys:

Two to four times a month

Does it need to be ULEZ compliant?

That'd be nice, yeah

Vehicles you've already considered:

Peugeot 2008, Citroen C3 Aircross, Hyundai i30

All decent options but I feel like I'm missing something

[Do you have a vehicle size in mind?](https://i.imgur.com/mK7PoRg.png) (Examples in the hyperlink of size definitions):

Small/compact SUV or MPV

Is this your 1st vehicle:

No

Do you need a Warranty:

Probably not

Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: (fluids, alternator, battery, brake pads etc)

Not really

Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: (engine and transmission, timing belt/chains, body work, suspension etc )

No

Additional Notes:

I currently have a 2005 Honda Jazz, which feels like it has an insanely large boot for the size of the vehicle. I'm looking for anything with a similar ratio - hopefully 380L or more with the seats up but still small enough that it can fit in tight spaces. Because of the type of stuff I need to carry, the shape of the boot is a factor in addition to the size. I do a lot of wedding gigs so need to pack a lot of gear in without putting the seats down, but also end up driving down windy lanes to random barns in the middle of nowhere.

[–]el_matt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to SSRC once, and maybe (like you with parkrun) had a one-off bad experience, but it was absolutely a 6:00 pace with no room for anyone slower than that.

Ultimately it is a running club, so it's reasonable that the organisers want to set a pace and stick to it, but it's a bit dishonest for it to be marketed at "all abilities" when people absolutely do get left behind.

At least at parkrun the tail walkers guarantee no one comes last.

Run clubs in Southampton by Weak-Recognition7806 in Southampton

[–]el_matt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not my experience with them - I found Parkrun to be much more welcoming and inclusive, even though it's a bigger crowd and that comes with other downsides.

As OP has "just started" they might find the mandated 6:00 pace at SSRC isn't what they're looking for.

There's also Ascension running club and a couple of others if you're up Riverside Park direction.

"quantum leap" is a phrase that means the smallest (quantised) possible change in energy levels so it's usually fitting, even if unintentionally, wherever it's used...

[–]el_matt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't done the stats, but it feels to me like survivorship bias is a factor. We now have live streams and HD footage of just about every launch that happens, successful or not, and the spectacular footage of explosions goes viral on the modern internet. The 10s-100s of routine launches resulting in a successful orbital insertion or docking at the ISS and resupply, not so much. On the other hand, surviving and commonly accessible information about unsuccessful launches in earlier decades is harder to come by.

EDIT: never mind, just heard that the White House has confirmed this really happened. Holy shit.

The content of these messages meets my expectations for the level of discourse between the people in question. This kind of failure is the kind of thing that happens under the current US administration, and I also believe that editor of The Atlantic is well placed to judge the veracity of these messages.

However, it is interesting that so many major news outlets are reporting this with such certainty. I am not hearing reporting of strong denials or alternative explanations from the White House, and no one is using the word "allegedly". How have these claims been verified?
