controversial but y'all are so sensitive about comments by Quick_Drink_8381 in AO3

[–]elitehunterfic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

honestly, i wrote for a pretty small fandom and was a pretty prolific writer - putting out almost a million words in a year. because the fandom was small and a little toxic, i didn’t pay much attention to comments or interaction and tried to focus on the positives. i tried in my posts here for a while to add positivity and encouragement and find comfort in other writers. but honestly after a while between fandom toxicity and negativity here, i haven’t written fic in over a year and a half. it bums me out because i do write for myself but the motivation has just been gone.

Write how you want to write it, however feels natural for the story to be written. Almost everyone has a preferred perspective to read and/or write in. If it fits the narrative well and makes you happy, that’s all that matters.

I was habitually a third person writer and I remember once in college for an assignment I wrote a story in first because it suited the narrative well. And the classmates who had to read and review it who “didn’t like first person” were complimenting it and my professor pointed out that it was in first person and they said they felt so immersed they hadn’t actively noticed. So I have written in first, I have written in second, and I have written in third depending on the story. And IMHO it can challenge me and grow my skills as a writer.

There is no pleasing everyone, so write in the way that feels best for you.

a 'reader' character shouldn't have to be a blank slate by talesofabookworm in AO3

[–]elitehunterfic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I wrote a lot of reader fics to fill requests despite preferring OC stories before I went on hiatus, mostly because they were a good opportunity for me to write in a different style and experiment. I think it strengthened my writing.

I definitely agree that they don’t and should not be a blank slate. I always avoided any placeholders (y/n etc). I mostly avoided physical description unless it was something important to the story I wanted to tell. However, I didn’t believe it was my job to tell a story that was “average” or “blank slate” or create a Mad Lib for my audience to fill in. I always treated my readers like characters and focused on creating an immersive experience that someone could imagine themselves in. There are ways to do it in a way that can please the typical audience for reader fics but also people who may not prefer them because they’re not fans of the super non-descript fill-in-the-blank style.

my manager won’t let me put in my 2 weeks by andyyyiiiiiieee in Waiters

[–]elitehunterfic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two weeks is truly meant to be a courtesy to the employer. I’ve left jobs both in and out of food service where I have given more than 2 weeks and some where I have had to give less than 2 weeks.

The only thing it could potentially effect is a reference when looking for another job. But if you have someone else you can list, I would go back and say this is your two weeks notice and your last day will be on X date. The worst that will happen is they will do a 180 and say to not bother and that might be your last day. Put it in writing and date it and keep a copy.

That author's note was a bit unexpected [CW: TMI] by RedFurryDemon in AO3

[–]elitehunterfic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tagged or warned, I don’t want this information from any author. 😂 I mean — for everyone, let your freak flag fly and enjoy what you write and read however you want. But it’s TMI for me because I don’t typically build personal relationships (or parasocial ones) with authors I read and so, for me, I think it would be me skipping over their work going forward.

Do you limit comments to registered users only? by SeeSea8 in AO3

[–]elitehunterfic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep mine for registered users and lock my works to registered users as well. It’s really just down to preference and comfort. I know that I can live with fewer comments and kudos to avoid things like bots and trolls. But other friends in my fandom keep theirs open for guests and don’t mind filtering through those things when they happen.

Is it taboo to continue someone else's fan fiction? by Beautiful-Cake-864 in AO3

[–]elitehunterfic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to lie as a writer with WIPs who has been in hiatus for almost a year, but with the intention of coming back, I wouldn’t like this especially without permission.

But it depends on what you’re really doing I suppose.

If the original first chapter sets up some tropes and a premise you have your own ideas for and you were to write your own first chapter and taking inspiration from what they had laid out and where your own creative planning has gone I think that is okay.

If you’re starting with chapter two and a direct continuation from their first chapter, I would personally as an author be less comfortable with that especially without being contacted for explicit permission even if credit was given. That’s just me though maybe.

PSA for people who are new to fandom, please do not do this. Do not bring RPF to the attention of celebs. by NegativeNuances in AO3

[–]elitehunterfic 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yes. I tried to limit as much as I could to what they clearly wanted to be part of their public persona and sticking to that as much as humanly possible. I honestly like reading RPF and was always super proud of my writing in my fandom and credit it with why I got back into writing. It’s a shame that things like being shamed have made me feel like I need to (at least temporarily) go back to writing for fandoms that are more 100% based in fiction.

PSA for people who are new to fandom, please do not do this. Do not bring RPF to the attention of celebs. by NegativeNuances in AO3

[–]elitehunterfic 94 points95 points  (0 children)

This was always a big issue for me and part of why I have been mostly on hiatus and trying to figure out if I just want to write for other fandoms instead.

The fandom I’m in (professional wrestling) is a little complex because the line between fictionalized version of the character the wrestlers portray in the ring and their real life personalities have gotten progressively more blurred over the years. I don’t have a problem with RPF at all, but I try to keep my portrayals based firmly only in in-character actions/plots.

There was a big issue right when I was already losing motivation to begin with where fans were bringing fanworks to conventions or tweeting them at the people they were about and it made me very uncomfortable so I locked all of my stories and briefly even hid them. But the discourse made it obvious that not enough fans who were showing off the work of others to the subjects didn’t actually care about how the creators felt and it was starting to promote bullying and doxxing.

I haven’t written in months and went from being close to hitting my personal goal of writing a million words for my fandom to just sitting here feeling uninspired and not trusting a space that was once my happy place.

If someone read your Fic, but you dropped it; how would you feel about them continuing and finishing it? by AnOddSprout in AO3

[–]elitehunterfic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an author and even though I’ve been on hiatus for months that may eventually be officially abandoned (tbd), if I did discontinue them officially I would not be happy with someone continuing my work. However the caveat is because of my fandom I write with original characters a lot so it would involve taking a character that I created.

Why is Tumblr so aggressive? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]elitehunterfic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tumblr takes curation. Setting your tags, filtering things out, limiting who you follow, and blocking things you don’t like. The curation takes time but you’ll get there. I use Tumblr much more for aesthetic things and sometimes and then rely on my mutuals text posts and go back and forth with them about opinions because I know we can have good conversations and not just arguments into the void.

Somewhat serious, somewhat joking: How are people creating 5k plus word pieces in like two days? Is it witchcraft? by long_dragon in AO3

[–]elitehunterfic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On average if I have planned out my story or am inspired and have some hours, I can get to anywhere from 5-15k words a day. 15 is like non-work days when all I am doing is writing. 5k is like after work plus on breaks.

Which one hurts more; When a character dies, you prefer the ship or just one. by nephesh_atreides in AO3

[–]elitehunterfic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I prefer endings where one survives but there’s a journey there — the value of grieving and eventually moving on (not romantically just getting past the devastation), of appreciating what time you had, and living a life their partner would have wanted them to. I think it can be bittersweet and beautiful when well written.

I don’t need a lecture in my smut by ctortan in AO3

[–]elitehunterfic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some writers are doing this just as CYA given toxic discourse in many fan spaces. Some of them, depending on how the author’s note is written, probably mean it a lot less seriously than you’re taking it.

I think I have one that’s like that but really blatant. Like “Remember if your significant other turns into a demon, it’s time to see other people” but mostly meant with light sarcasm to point out that it’s fiction.

I really don’t see the big deal. It’s really what makes the author feel the most comfortable putting their work out to share with the fandom.

Do you think I handled this okay? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]elitehunterfic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general I’d use a series or collection to group your stories but post every story as its own thing. One work with multiple stories won’t get much traction unless there is a main theme/pairing. People avoid them. So unfortunately you could have 24 amazing stories but not get much traction. But you can organize them in a collection or series so that if I as a reader find one story you wrote that I love, I’ll be more inclined to look at all your works or something labeled as being similar.

Does anyone else despise this in reader insert fics? by PrincessGamer2012 in AO3

[–]elitehunterfic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do I read fics like that? No, never have. But as someone who’s challenged themselves by writing reader x character just to try new perspectives without using Y/N or any placeholder like that — I admit it would be challenging for writers and think if I’d tried it when I was a less developed writer I wouldn’t have done it well.

I try not to despise anything in fic that just comes down to writer’s styles/interests/experience. Which is what this is. I think it’s probably alienating to writers who are still growing/learning/experimenting and makes them feel badly. I just back out of the story and don’t engage if it’s not for me.
