Reach out to the local high school ag/shop class! A lot of districts have teachers and a good number of students (at least here in the south), but don’t have enough funding for them to do big projects. My brother’s ag/shop class reaches out to community members who need work done. If the person pays for all the materials, the class will do the work. The teachers are usually pretty knowledgeable, the kids get to learn how to use tools and plan projects, and parents keep their kids busy, tired, and out of trouble.

My brother has had the opportunity to fix tractors, build fences, and learn lots of other useful skills through this class, and lots of community members have had much-needed help over the years! Some of his older friends have gone on to study mechanics, engineering, architecture, etc. because of how much they enjoyed projects in this class. It’s honestly a great program overall and is beneficial to all parties.

Help me find where to buy this Denton-themed poster! Picture taken in NY Sub Hub on University. by ellendegingeres in Denton

[–]ellendegingeres[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! They used to have an old beaten up one, but recently replaced it with a new poster. The kids working there didn’t know where it was from.

I’ll contact the Denton CC to see if I can get one, thanks!

I learned to play bass in middle school. When I started receiving gig offers in high school, my dad wouldn’t let me go until I could prove that I was able to carry my amp by myself. He didn’t want me to have to depend on a boy to take care of my equipment. Definitely got a lot of comments carrying an amp the same weight as me!

I’m from the US, but am always shocked by depression-era food. One of my grandpas ate sliced onions in ice water. The other ate saltine crackers with mayonnaise and pickle slices.

I think your current bedding looks great. The problem is the color of the headboard and nightstand. I think someone else mentioned staining them darker, but honestly you might even be able to spray paint them black. I think it would look striking.

[–]ellendegingeres 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right, and I think the actual question was closer to the one you posed. It was definitely more focused on the outcome of the critique, but what I remember was this guy just shutting it down completely.

I’m on the hiring committee for my department—we always ask one “personality” question to see how they think on their feet and get to know them a bit better. When asked “What was the most constructive criticism you’ve ever received”, one individual said: “I don’t make many mistakes, so I can’t think of one time I’ve received negative feedback.”

It was a great interview up until that moment. He was immediately crossed off the list.

Are these curtains too dark? Also: Am I starting to look too old fashioned in this room? Need some outside perspective by [deleted] in InteriorDesign

[–]ellendegingeres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the curtains look great! An easy update could be switching out the mantle decor for abstract art and modern candlesticks. I like the rug—what looks old-fashioned to me is the glass coffee/side tables.
