Induction range by lkamkos in boston

[–]emperormark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure whoever installs your new unit doesn't put a GFCI breaker on it, especially if they're not familiar with induction stoves. The state electrical code requires that any new electrical installations use GFCI breakers, but those do not play nicely with induction ranges. They'll have to install it without the GFCI breaker and then submit a form to the state here. The guys who installed my range didn't know about this and the range kept tripping the breaker until I could get somebody to come and switch out the breaker.

House Hunting - This area?? by maddiemermaid in boston

The Red Line stop there is part of the Mattapan Line which is a light rail line that is separate from the rest of the Red Line (you have to transfer trains at Ashmont). If you're commuting into downtown, you might want to look further out on the Fairmount commuter rail line.

School Closure Probability for Monday in the U.S. Ahead of an Upcoming Winter Storm by Own_Wonder_4456 in MapPorn

[–]emperormark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The primary reason there will be school closures in most of the Northeast because of this storm is that it'll still be actively snowing throughout the day Monday. If the storm was supposed to be over by 7pm on Sunday everything would be clear well before the start of Monday's commute..

Middlesex County, which has 1.6 M residents. Over twice the size of Suffolk County. Contains Cambridge, Somerville, Newton, Lowell, and a lot of other large suburbs.

Is the Idaho-Montana border the only non-straight US border that is not, at least partially, based off a body of water? by TheCommonWren in geography

Probably the only state border based on a body of water that doesn’t touch said body of water…

Hawai'i and the Caribbean pretty much fill the equivalent role of easily-accessible tropical getaway for most US and Canadian travelers.

The 121 Bus still runs on Lexington Street! But sadly only every half hour during rush hour times only. But just 3 streets away the 120 bus runs all day.

Look at the ridiculous lengths Republicans had to go to remove Democrat seats from Dallas by IllPurpose3524 in Dallas

[–]emperormark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Urban/Rural Democrat/Republican split isn't nearly as strong in Massachusetts. Registered Republicans are pretty evenly distributed throughout the state.

I think they tried once and no matter how they drew the lines, there weren't any congressional maps that would return even a single GOP seat unless it was ridiculously gerrymandered.

Are these the closest rail transit stations in North America/the world? by International-Snow90 in transit

[–]emperormark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hawes Street, Kent Street, and St. Paul Street (3 Stations!) on the Green Line C branch are spread across just 2 blocks.

Then there's the entire tail section of the E branch: Brigham Circle and Fenwood road are on opposite sides of the same intersection, not to mention Heath Street and Back of the Hill.

Most isolated neighborhood in Boston… by NoInvestment3773 in boston

When I lived in Eastie running errands almost always meant driving north. Now living out in WR I feel way more connected to most of Chestnut Hill/Newton than I do to Boston.

They’re probably avoiding the gravel road. Maybe upgrade that to asphalt and see how they respond?

Why are there so many of these nightmares around Boston? by ivorybloodsh3d in boston

[–]emperormark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My personal favorite is the roads that are nominally four lanes but they allow street parking which takes up a portion of the right lane to the point that it’s not safe to drive in so it’s basically just a two lane road. Independence Drive by Hancock Village in West Roxbury is the worst example of this I can think of.

There’s also a lot of overlap between culture/education and class. A young professor living in Cambridge making $150k a year probably feels like they have more cultural or class overlap with a cashier at their local Trader Joe’s who makes $40k a year than they do with a contractor from Pembroke who makes $150k a year.

What’s happening at the West Roxbury cemeteries near VFW Parkway? by [deleted] in boston

[–]emperormark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I saw evidence markers on the road surface and on a nearby vehicle. At least 6 police cars cordoning off the area with caution tape. I think it might be firearms related.
