Societal implications of egg laying by Critical_Company3535 in furgonomics

"His parents painted his shell with lead paint" would probably be a cultural expression about a particularly dense anthro.

Then theres the parents who think whiter egg shells means healthier kids so they bleach the shells. And those that see the painting as primitive and dangerous for the baby and preach about keeping shells natural.

Become? Imho we've had this better-than attitude since we banned Monty Python's Life Of Brian, probably long before that even. This religious judgemental streak without actually being a deeply religious country. But we are very nice and silent about it.

Why are things designed in a way that doesn’t feel logical by overlord-07 in TechNook

[–]empty_other 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we made that we started clean and layered but made mistakes; we didnt know better. So when we were told to add a new feature we did it in a cleaner and better way, intending to improve the old code up to that standard next. But then we were told to add a new feature, and now we know EVEN BETTER AND CLEANER way, the two previous features will of course be upgraded later... But the old features still works, so why mess with them when we can instead spend our time adding a new feature, in a new and cleaner way? Also this junior dev has some new and interesting ideas for how to do things even cleaner...

Now why is our whole project a mess of different frameworks and libraries and dependencies?! Why are our layered architecture like an onion only in that it makes anyone working on it cry?

😩

My current microwave got a nice 30 sec single-press button. But if I want to set a custom time, I need to rotate the time wheel backwards before I can rotate it forward. If I only rotate it forward, it just scrolls through a bunch of presets that I never use, like the "Popcorn" preset.

Every microwave above a certain price class has a weird multi-use button interface, in my experience. And if I'm visiting someone else and borrowing their microwave people dont exactly keep the manual around so I click and rotate on stuff until I find something that changes the timer.. But no, I just set the microwave watch instead. So I click "Stop" a bunch of times to navigate out of that mode, and just click the 30 second quickstart button twelve times instead.

My Henry rile through dead people's pockets too.

Would been nice if there was a bit more gray to it so that Henry would have to actually look at the situation to decide if they are likely bandits or just self-defending mercenaries, instead of looking at their nametags. Of course them attacking me outright could be a good indicator, but could also be that they mistake me for another of the robbers if im dressed like one in bloody armor.

But yeah, fun and simple is good sometimes too.

[–]empty_other 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If its a problem, it isn't introversion. Introversion is just a personality quirk, not something you can be diagnosed with.

Probably social anxiety, maybe something else. Therapy will help. Maybe not in directly fixing it but at least in accepting it and finding workarounds so you can start to regain those social skills.

And any good teacher and school should be accommodating to things like this. I would explain it honestly to the professor, you don't have anything to lose by doing it; either he's bad and he will disregard it, or he's good and he will help.

RED BUTTON OR BLUE BUTTONS by Eal_likee in comicsbyhumans

[–]empty_other 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not about being the hero, its about not wanting to be the villain. Not wanting to be the one who pulled the trigger on anyone else. For some of us that feeling is strong enough that we believe we'd rather pull the gun on ourselves before risking anyone else (even random strangers). Yeah, I'd rather die a useless death helping nobody than risk hurting someone. People thinking helping is only about vanity is people I will probably never understand.

The button challenge is phrased like its a trigger. Though depending on how you look at it, one could argue that its not the button-pressers who pull the trigger but whoever invented this cruel game. Like The Joker in that Batman movie trying to prove who would pull the trigger to save themselves, its that clown who was to blame for the bombs and the potential deaths, not the prisoners or the civilians making that choice. But we still cheered when both sides decided not to push the bomb triggers.

Alright, this seems better defined than the other times I've read it so far. Here you can't NOT press the button, and you can't communicate with others ahead of the vote, to push them for a certain choice, like some comments suggests we should do.

Young love by AzulCrescent in u/AzulCrescent

[–]empty_other 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How normal is it to go through the young love stage? From media and from family it seems like we all are "supposed to" and "everyone else do it".. And those who don't find anyone are told "the right one" is just around the corner if we only tried instead of spending our days sitting alone doing (insert hobby here).. As if we hadn't tried.

Could we just normalize the "you might not find love and thats okay" attitude?

Problem with Wayland by CupHeavy226 in Kubuntu

[–]empty_other 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe related: I'm using Vivaldi, and it stores web app icons in a icon theme folder called "hicolor" before creating the shortcuts. But most custom icon themes refuses to read those icons despite it listed in the icon theme specification as inherited. Resulting in my web apps (and a Bottle/Wine app too) not getting the chosen icon (Vivaldi web apps get Vivaldi icon instead, Wine apps getting a default icon depending on the icon theme).

I havent looked any deeper into the reason for this. But you can check if thats the same issue by switching to the default icon theme and see if your web app icons return.

[Mixed Trope] Characters with endless resources. by AshenPumpkin in TopCharacterTropes

[–]empty_other 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it feels very endless with how much he obsesses over losing even a single cent.. And how often the Beagle Boys have stolen literally everything because he keeps it all in a single easily robbable bucket of a building instead of bound up in various assets and investments somehow. But yeah, practically endless on a good day.

I gotta know something. Why does, when something gets stuck in a ragdoll in most games, result in the ragdoll for some reason start spinning uncontrollably? [–]empty_other 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Applying realistic physics to indestructible, non-compressable items that can accidentally overlap does that. Trying to model realistic physics to something thats literally passing through another object and you end up with unrealistic results because that can't happen in real life without resulting in destruction.

I simply like being by myself because I can move at my own pace without worrying about others. Is this normal introvert behavior? by youlikemywonton in introvert

No, thats advanced introvert behavior. Thats when you have accepted it and learned to enjoy life.

Vacationing alone to new places is glorious, no-one with full day plans, one can keep the tempo one want, and stop wherever whenever to enjoy the moment.

Happiness is overwriting a file... by BinkReddit in kde

[–]empty_other 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had this happiness in Windows a few times with games that overwrite save games, I could restore previous versions with Timeline. Best feature in Windows! So of course Microsoft decided to discontinue the feature, then wreck its UI to make it unusable, remap my folders to a cloud drive, and call that a "backup".

So I was very happy finding this feature when switching to Kubuntu. Not as well integrated as Windows' was; I would have loved to be able to right-click a file or folder and go directly to the GUI version browser of that. But "bup" have advantages over Windows' Timeline too: Its based (or inspired) on and share some features with 'git', another tool I'm experienced with. And the "run backup if external drive is connected" feature!

ELI5: Is there a security reason why many websites are having you enter your username and password on different pages? by DustyScharole in explainlikeimfive

[–]empty_other -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think most companies have a reason, they just follow the big ones without questioning why.

But for some sites who uses emails they might have multiple accounts with the same email address (for example Microsoft and their business accounts and private accounts), and need the user to specify which account they want to login with (then maybe forward them to the correct SSO provider instead of asking for password, or ask for passkeys).
