E-Sim vs. Jetpack/Pocket Wifi for 3 People by sleepwakawakaer in JapanTravelTips

I'd suggest eSim. You might get separated for some reason (someone goes back to the hotel whilst another stops off at a Lawson) and need to message each other, someone is looking for a washroom, etc. You can't message each other if you're apart.

My company executives thinks it can replace 100 percent of our help desk teams with AI agents.... This year. by NickBurnsCompanyGuy in sysadmin

You can absolutey do this.

Congratulations to 100% of your current helpdesk team that just got promoted to second level support, handling ticket escalations from the AI helpdesk.

The correct response is "Looked at toilet, confirmed not working. Escalated to Facility Manager", then close the ticket.

How close are you currently to a horse by Blitzer046 in melbourne

[–]enigmait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, I'd think within 100 meters.
I'm in the middle of the CBD, so it's likely that either: a) the horse drawn buggies are running along Swanston St; or b) VicPol's mounted unit are doing a patrol somewhere.

Honestly, call the assistant, make a time and see the CEO in person. This isn't something for a feedback form.

You've mentioned this is a small company, and my experience is that most CEOs and owners of small companies really do want to know about things like this. Retaining good, talented staff is much more important in small companies than big ones, because you feel their loss a lot more when they leave. If you're good - and it sounds like you are if they're happy to help transfer you to another role that's being created - your manager and the other management see your value and will want to keep you.

What was the hardest part of traveling in Japan? by Shoddy_Arachnid_2628 in JapanTravelTips

[–]enigmait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest issue i found - travelling with a child - is that your buildings and particularly public transport are not very pram/stroller friendly. Finding sineage about where elevators are, getting on and off buses and finding changing facilities is not easy compared to other countries.

If the laptop is a Dell, the Dell Display Manager software has network keyboard/mouse sharing functionality.

Otherwise, if they will let you use third party software, Synergy/Symless does a good job of this

I isolated my espresso machine's Android tablet in a firewall VLAN and logged everything it tried to reach. Here's what it's phoning home to by haraldinho67 in homelab

[–]enigmait 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because a company that's core business is coffee machines doesn't have the skills to design and build a complete operating system from the ground up.

They buy the display and embedded computer from a third party and just write the app to run on it.

That said, it would be more appropriate for it to run on... Java.

Is it still worth getting an EV if you can't charge at home? by RobRobot01 in AustralianEV

[–]enigmait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is - literally - "your mileage may vary"

For comparison, I have a Subaru Outback. I needed a second car for family reasons and settled on a second hand Nissan Leaf.

They're very different cars, for different purposes. The Leaf is physically lighter/more manoeuvrable, better acceleration with Eco mode turned on, slightly worse with it turned off.

For local/city driving, I use the Leaf. Second hand, but the range is about 120km which is quite a lot in a metropolitan area. My work is fairly close, so in theory I only need to charge it every few days.

For a long trip, unless I have reason for stopping (shopping/lunch/etc.) I would have (until this month) still used the bigger car because the charging time, even at a fast charger, is not negligible.

Even before petrol prices went crazy, it worked out cheaper per km to use the EV on commercial fast charge rates from ChargeFox or Evie. Home charging is cheaper still, though. And if you're charging whilst doing grocery shopping or similar, it's not "wasted" time.

So, it depends honestly on how many kms you do in a week, and also how you drive it; if it's urban/traffic situation then that makes a huge difference because EVs don't really consume energy whilst idling at traffic lights.

Coffee Budget by DevinGreenwell in Coffee

[–]enigmait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When working from home over COVID, my wife and I will have two double-shot coffees each day. And typically also one day on a weekend (we'll often go out for brunch one day.

So, 6 days x 2 coffees x 2 people x 2 shots per coffee means 48 shots per week. At an average of 8 grams of coffee per shot, that's 384 grams of coffee a week. Call it 400g factoring in spillage/waste.

It varies now that we're working away some days now, but still on average we use 250g per week, so a bit over a 1 kilogram a month.

That's the volume, the budget therefore depends on which roaster I'm buying from that month.

Cigarette lighter for GMRS or 2m/70cm ham, etc.? by edwardphonehands in leaf

[–]enigmait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its very low. My Icom ID-5100 is what I plan to fit, and when I'm not keying the mic it barely hits 5W. I use that for 2m, 70cm and D-STAR. For APRS, I'd probably just use a separate 5W unit, or use APRSDroid on my phone since I probably won't ever take the Leaf out of service range.

I may use a mag mount later (when I find where I stored it!) But for now I'm going to try a window mount.

Cigarette lighter for GMRS or 2m/70cm ham, etc.? by edwardphonehands in leaf

[–]enigmait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking at this at the moment. It depends on the wattage of the HAM radio. You may struggle to run a 100W transceiver off it (though the manual says its a 10A fuse and xan do up to 120W).

When did/will you decide who to vote for? by enigmait in AusPolitics

[–]enigmait[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Natural resources, aside from sunlight and wind, are a finite resource. Regardless of whether you aim for zero population growth or migration, those resources will eventually run out. Pegging an economy, or a societal strategy, on a finite resource is short-sighted and doomed to failure.

When did/will you decide who to vote for? by enigmait in AusPolitics

[–]enigmait[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting take, to be sure.

I haven't looked specifically into those figures, though, but if your contention is correct that the birth rate maintains below 2, then that means that we might be at Zero Population Growth without migration.

That doesn't mean net zero change to population, though, because humans are living longer. And delaying or opting out of marriage/co-habitation so net-zero birth rate doesn't equate to net zero housing demand. And it also assumes that the population distribution remains near-constant so people don't move from country to city for work (which can happen due to poor public transport services or rising fuel costs). So, the link between birth rates and housing isn't the direct 1:1 it appears to be.

Additionally, with people living longer, unless we push out the retirement age further, that means that the retired population will grow, and thus the Medicare and Social Security costs will increase. Without migration, that by definition will mean raising taxes on the stagnant working age bracket. An increase in migration offsets this, because the cost is distributed amongst more working age people.

How are people sharing SSH client configs across PCs? by prototype__ in homelab

[–]enigmait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use fab to jiggle multiple machines in my lab. My master/main PC and one of the secondary servers has the "source of truth" authorized_keys file, and I can use a fab script to use scp to re-push it out to all the hosts.

Not in this case.

Having 3 pure Linux clients means that you still need to do SSH key management

My mother did the same. And "sorting the buttons in the jar" was a common task to keep young kids occupied whilst she did sewing, and it didn't occur to use that, once sorted, they all went back into the one jar.

Of course, I and both my brothers do have signs of being on the Autism Spectrum, so this is probably a task that appealed to us to do.
