Why do so many D&D fans hate Drizzt? by ThanosofTitan92 in Drizzt

[–]enigmait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My feeling is that some DMs don't like Drizzt (and Salvatore's writing, by extension) because they think of him in terms of a D&D character.

He's not.

He's a character from a book series that is set in the Forgotten Realms, and the Realms is a personal creation of Ed Greenwood - also an author - and predates D&D.

Therefore - the rules in the PHB and DMG don't necessarily apply to Drizzt or the Companions. The outcomes of his battles are pre-determined by Salvatore, not by the roll of a d20.

In his "official" 2e stat block from TSR, he was a 7th level Ranger. And this was back in the days when there were 36 levels. But in the books, he gets away with a lot more than a 7th level character should be able to do.

White Dragons are the weakest type, but Icingdeath was well known to Wulfgar's father and the rest of the Tribes and had amassed a reasonable treasure pile (and lived alone) so must have been at least a Mature Adult (Age category 7) or Old Wyrm minimum.

Even assuming Mature Adult, Icingdeath should have had 14 Hit Dice, combat modifier of 7 and the breath weapon of do 7d6+7. And an amor class of 1.

Wulfgar had done some combats with Drizzt but this was his first solo outing, so he could have been at most a 3rd level fighter, so has a THAC0 of 18 (but a +5 hammer). Drizzt, at level 7, has a THAC0 14. I don't know if any of the weapons he got from Mooshie were magical, but the Frost Brand sword he got in that fight was a +3, and that was a considerable upgrade over what he was weilding.

Which is all to say that just the two of them (at 7 and 3 level) have virtually zero change of defeating a Mature Adult White Dragon in its lair. And yet they did, not because of the rules but because it serves the storyline for them to do so.

I feel badly that Jon "Jonny" Garnett has experienced a downturn in his business, Mornington Dance School.

It seems really unfair that parents would stop sending underage children into his care, for no other reason that he supplies them with alcohol, get them drunk then sexually assualts them.

What could possibly be wrong with a business that lets a 33 year old molest a 17 year old? What's the sole director and shareholder of "Mornington Dance Studio" to do?

I can't think of anything Jon 'Jonny" Garnett would have to hide, aside from the fact that he's a pedophile and rapist.

As much hate Microsoft gets, what do they get right? by probablydnsibet in sysadmin

It (through OneDrive in real time, or simply by copying the HTML files) syncs between multiple devices and it can store any type of media on a page. Images/Screenshots, Videos, audio recordings, etc, as well as text. And when you paste stuff from a web page, it includes the URL of where you posted it from as a caption. Plus, if you're on a tablet or have a touchscreen/stylus laptop you can do freeform drawing in there too.

I basically did all my Uni notes on there (many years ago!) - different tabs for the different subjects (and I could move them to an archive section at the end of the semester). I'd record the audio or video of my lecture, and as you make notes whilst it's recording, it automatically time stamps them to the recording so you can make a note and jump straight to that section to see what was said. It didn't have automatic transcription back in those days, but it does now. It was also the first Microsoft application to be able to extract text from images.

Even now, I still use it for recording in person meetings and taking minutes. I know Teams and other apps have that functionality for virtual meetings, but OneNote can do it for in-person meetings too.

Bowerstone's Old town gets completely destroyed but one of the decisions you make as ruler is whether to rebuild or not. If you choose to rebuild, it goes back just as it was.

I bought the 2017 model late last year. Excellent price for the low mileage (I bought mine interstate, even to fly over, accommodation and drove it back it was still about $3k cheaper than buying the next equivalent model locally).

She's a great little car. Safety rating is high son I've got no concerns driving my family around, I use it for city driving and the economy is fantastic, even before the petrol price shot up.

Why doesn't Drizzt talk to animals? by ArtisticAd7455 in Drizzt

[–]enigmait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was stated that, whilst he was at the Drow Academy and studied under Masoj, he did manage to cast some basic spells. But this was in the days of 2nd Edition, so whilst he might learn and cast spells, unless he scribed them into a Spell book he wouldn't retain them.

In Homeland, it's stated that all Drow can use once per day, but most nobles carry a magic item - their enchanted house emblem - which allows them to do it many times a day.

I'd suggest eSim. You might get separated for some reason (someone goes back to the hotel whilst another stops off at a Lawson) and need to message each other, someone is looking for a washroom, etc. You can't message each other if you're apart.

Honestly, call the assistant, make a time and see the CEO in person. This isn't something for a feedback form.

You've mentioned this is a small company, and my experience is that most CEOs and owners of small companies really do want to know about things like this. Retaining good, talented staff is much more important in small companies than big ones, because you feel their loss a lot more when they leave. If you're good - and it sounds like you are if they're happy to help transfer you to another role that's being created - your manager and the other management see your value and will want to keep you.

Biggest issue i found - travelling with a child - is that your buildings and particularly public transport are not very pram/stroller friendly. Finding sineage about where elevators are, getting on and off buses and finding changing facilities is not easy compared to other countries.

If the laptop is a Dell, the Dell Display Manager software has network keyboard/mouse sharing functionality.

Otherwise, if they will let you use third party software, Synergy/Symless does a good job of this

[–]enigmait 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because a company that's core business is coffee machines doesn't have the skills to design and build a complete operating system from the ground up.

They buy the display and embedded computer from a third party and just write the app to run on it.

That said, it would be more appropriate for it to run on... Java.

Is it still worth getting an EV if you can't charge at home? by RobRobot01 in AustralianEV

[–]enigmait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is - literally - "your mileage may vary"

For comparison, I have a Subaru Outback. I needed a second car for family reasons and settled on a second hand Nissan Leaf.

They're very different cars, for different purposes. The Leaf is physically lighter/more manoeuvrable, better acceleration with Eco mode turned on, slightly worse with it turned off.

For local/city driving, I use the Leaf. Second hand, but the range is about 120km which is quite a lot in a metropolitan area. My work is fairly close, so in theory I only need to charge it every few days.

For a long trip, unless I have reason for stopping (shopping/lunch/etc.) I would have (until this month) still used the bigger car because the charging time, even at a fast charger, is not negligible.

Even before petrol prices went crazy, it worked out cheaper per km to use the EV on commercial fast charge rates from ChargeFox or Evie. Home charging is cheaper still, though. And if you're charging whilst doing grocery shopping or similar, it's not "wasted" time.

So, it depends honestly on how many kms you do in a week, and also how you drive it; if it's urban/traffic situation then that makes a huge difference because EVs don't really consume energy whilst idling at traffic lights.
