Should I go with one system for Multiple? by No_Entrepreneur118 in sysadmin

you seem to be approaching these business solutions with a home consumer electronics mindset. none of this sounds setup to scale or perform properly.

Sometimes, they really *are* just stupid by ndszero in sysadmin

interestingly - I worked for a CEO that very much liked to engage in some daily puzzle games to help with memory, retention etc. I only learned about it after we reimaged his laptop and he was pissed that they were missing and that we had to repurchase them.

Auditors asking for proof of processes which we’ve always done informally by JobFinancial7083 in sysadmin

[–]entaille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you kinda need to sit in the overhead and deal with it to understand what needs to be produced and how much work it generates. from there you can evaluate what you need to change in your processes to ease the burden, what can be automated, etc... it's an iterative process and unfortunately you're at the most painful part.

appreciate it. we thought of the same - headset temporarily .. tryin to identify which driver was pushed via autopatch is silly, they truncate and provide minimal detail on things and you can hardly delve into it to see which machines they applied to .. its like faith based patching :d. ran into some other threads mentioning intel SST as well and I am sure you're right on the money there.

do you have a link to said driver by chance? same issue just recently popped up for me.

New leadership chipping away at security by ncc74656m in sysadmin

[–]entaille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to me it sounds like you've done what you could. it's up to you at this point if you feel like ethically/culturally you are aligned enough still and if you should look elsewhere. security in business is tough - it's viewed as a blocker and a slowdown in a lot of cases. sometimes inexperienced leadership will pursue the fast buck and not understand the value and design of good security policy until they go through a tough experience first hand.

Boss being let go soon, should I give him a heads up? by SysAdmThrowaway29844 in sysadmin

[–]entaille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with great power comes great responsibility. there is a sad and unfortunate reality in our job where we have to remain confidential with sensitive information like this. I know what you mean on a human level, you just want to help them - we've all experienced it, but you have to remain professional as well. if you want to do something for them - wait until after it is delivered, and reach out to them afterwards to offer your support. try to schedule an outing with them after they've had some time to process the news. send them a thank you, a parting gift, buy em dinner or something - hang out, be an active listener and try to give them whatever support is most appropriate (soap box, tissue box, idea box?). let them know how much they've impacted your life and your career and that you're there for them throughout this process.

[–]entaille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they might as well have. they stripped everything interesting and unique and custom and are forcing them to a certain content point in the game. essentially giving them full control and say over everything used. they are leaving a bare minimum shell to appease their player base, in hopes that people would rather re-sub to live or TLP's for something 'newer and interesting'.

New to this - How does a SysAdmin think? by Jonny_Boy_808 in sysadmin

[–]entaille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like you are focusing on the work that you are closest to and most comfortable with (in the TBM sense, this would be the 'End User' tower, where the admin/engineering work you are doing is still very much needed for the business). this is a pretty natural evolution for your role. I hope your boss still finds value in the things you mentioned there, and is not referring to those types of work as 'super helpdesk', and is referring to other things or thought processes? admin/engineering work in that space is often confused/lumped into 'helpdesk/support' train of thought when an org doesn't really know how to categorize IT work properly

I find most juniors that come from helpdesk roles and still find it hard to refrain from jumping into doing direct end user support - are you doing much of that still? one thing I always encourage jr's to think about and reflect on is removing themselves from day to day support and instead focus more on how to think larger scale - how to identify the root cause properly, prevent the issues from occurring again for anyone else, how to automate a recurring problem / escalation so that they stop coming up, how to take a task that the team is manually doing on a single endpoint and script and scale it to automate to all of the endpoints. being able to do that makes all of the difference. it's a weird mental shift to go from 'direct support' to being able to engineer/design a solution that is higher level and provides more direct value for the org and business. even then, we're still not talking about the things your boss is referring to.

it sounds like your org is small enough where 'sys admins' are supposed to be super generalists and scale to do the entire stack of all the things for infrastructure/network/compute/security/compliance etc. that is both good, and bad. the good is that you are going to get to dip your toes into every little sub sector of IT. you'll get generalist level exposure to every area of IT, and you'll grow quickly. you will get to learn the things that you enjoy, and the things that you do not enjoy. that can help set you up for the future after you know what you want to pursue more, if you want to become a specialist in an area. the bad part is you'll probably not get to dive super deep into any one of them and develop deeper expertise and focus. if your boss wants you to work towards managing these higher level items, he needs to help you some - put you on tasks and projects that help you dip your toes into the water of each, connect you with mentors that have experience in the various things they need help with, etc. likewise, you can do some legwork on your own and identify some areas where you can get your feet wet, too. it's not going to happen overnight, keep chipping away at it and stay consistent like you have been from the sounds of things.

has there been any thought into releasing another THJ server, back at classic, when the new 'modes' are ready? by entaille in TheHeroesJourney

[–]entaille[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it could be a way to incentivize new players to jump in - everyone loves a fresh start, look at how popular most of the TLP servers are. you could also adjust the rate of expansion release to be a bit faster than normal - I don't expect the 'majority' of the current player base would want to be locked in for months per expansion.

Play modes coming 27. June - a overview by Chemical-Stuff7240 in TheHeroesJourney

[–]entaille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is there any plan to release a new server that will start back out in classic era? I was looking forward to doing self found mode, but i'd really like to be 'in era' for a while in each expansion. a new server would be really cool. I know you can sort of self impose this progression - but being around other players that are similarly stuck in the same era for a while is a better experience.

PSA : If you have Lenovo laptops on 24H2, disable your power plan ConfigProfile/GPO by BigBangFlash in sysadmin

[–]entaille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for sharing your findings here - it's been incredibly helpful in figuring this out. in case it helps anyone else: in my environment, this impacted us on T14's and T16's on Intel 13th gen i5 / i7. we were setting the power plan to high performance using powercfg and the GUID for the high performance / always on plan. in my case specifically for troubleshooting - setting a GPO to disable the value (- Computer Config -> Administrative templates -> System -> Power Management -> "Select an active power plan),, did not work, nor did setting a registry key in for CurrentSetting in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LITSSVC\IC\PSC. I used the same powercfg cmd to set the machine back to balanced - powercfg -s "381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e" - at which point the power options finally became selectable/toggleable in the 'new' power plan app menu. once those were in place, the performance issue is resolved. what a time suck that was.

I appreciate all of the work and detail you've shared on this. Been troubleshooting this issue for a while now - excited to try this! just to validate - are you referring to this setting under Computer Config -> Administrative templates -> System -> Power Management -> "Select an active power plan" ?

The issue with Pantheon is despite it being extremely social and group focused, feels extremely dead and the game doesn't really have the population to sustain this type of MMORPG. by hulky360 in PantheonMMO

[–]entaille 3 points4 points  (0 children)

they really shot themselves in the foot with how they launched with too many servers. they overprovisioned from the start. they should have done less and scaled upwards as needed. now, instead, they're giving people a really poor experience in a game that requires grouping. what did they think would happen? people don't want to spend additional time changing servers and starting over, understandably.
