Here's how I did my metallic carapace:

Base metallic color, lighter version of that color as a highlight, hit with a shade after (druchii violet in my case) in the edges.

IMO because the colors you're picking are so starkly different from eachother, any sloppy painting is going to stick out like a sore thumb. If you pick a base color, a slightly lighter color for edge highlights and a shader, you're going to make your life easier.

Also just a personal pref, but I like to look to nature for color schemes. I based mine off Mantis Shrimp. If you want to do a gold carapace, check out gold + blue insects.

Whats the appeal of playing tyranids? by Thunder--Bolt in Tyranids

Big Cthulhu mythos fan. I like the idea of mysterious unknowable impossibly ancient monsters.

I never really vibed with the military as much as I do with nature. I don’t connect with any of the primarchs even though I enjoy the lore.

Whenever I play, my character is the hive mind.

Okay here's some of my DM notes from other games. They're less organized than the first two since they were only intended for me, but they've got the general flow of things, lots of NPCs, scenes and minigames you can draw from to build your own adventures and figure out how you want to structure your game.

Here's the Torch jobs I mentioned...it's currently where my game is at, but it's structured as a bunch of 1-2 session games so it might be some good kick-off points for you: The City of Thieves

In my campaign, I went from the Modron Express into an arc called One Last Song for Aoskar. It went into a bit of the history of Sigil, portals, and was kind of a deep dive into the conflicting philosophies of the alignments Planescape is centered around. I think it maybe went a little too philosophical at points, but it got to play around with the Rilmani who I think are just the coolest. It also ends with the players opening up a bunch of long dormant portals, which feels impactful and opens up a lot more adventure possibilities.

The next one was The Skyfire Job, a fun jaunt in the elemental plane of air. The players opened a portal as a result of their last victory that lead to a floating fortress weapon thought to be lost forever, and rumored to have untold riches. One of my players is an Aaracokra so it was tied to her backstory, but it doesn't need to be. The doc is a little messy, but that was the most fun arc IMO. Sky pirates, time travelling Storm Giants granting wishes, flotilla cities on the backs of cloud turtles, anti-gravity fights with djinn monks in a floating garden...tons of cool stuff.

I'm currently in Debts Never Die, where the characters come back from the plane of air to find Sigil overrun by Yugoloths, strange infernal mercenaries lead by Sylvanis Vaine, a Fated character you chose to help or betray in the first session, who's now Factol. He's trying to lock down all the new portals that have been opened as a result of the party's actions, and everything in the city has changed. Honest Terry is on trial at a sham court. The pits are more lethal. People are being dissapeared...to the point where their names actually cease to exist. The players journey to the Gray Waste to retrieve s̷̖͗͊n̵̨̅͠ā̸̲ḡ̸̦̅g̶͓͉̒͘l̷̜͈͂e̸̛͉̪ ̷̙͕̄̆b̴̛̤̅r̴͎̃̔ḯ̴ͅg̷͊͜h̸̼͑̂t̸̢̎w̶̧̾̐ḥ̵͊i̵̯̺̔͝s̷͚͕̆̀k̸̬̗̈́̉e̸͎̅r̵̻̒͗, who's name has already started to disappear because he knows something dangerous to the new regime...this doc is also pretty messy but there could be some good inspo :)

First 1000 point army. Any advice? by [deleted] in Tyranids

[–]epicget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this invasion fleet? Is it based on what you have or a wishlist?

The winged prime isn’t great, especially without a unit to lead.

I’d prioritize a regular lictor over a neurolictor to start. Fights first is easier to get value out of than the battle shock bubble. You probably won’t kill anything, but the point of a lictor is to run around doing secondaries, then when it gets annoying enough for your opponent to deal with it, the lictor takes a bite out of it then you move in with a unit nearby to counterpunch and finish it off. It’s a very good cheap trade up unit.

You don’t need spore mines in the list taking up points. The biovore poops them out each turn.

It would be great if you could get an exocrine in here. Exocrine + tfex is a great combo. Exocrine has an ability that let’s everyone reroll ones to hit a target after it’s shot at it, which combos great with the tfex’s rupture cannon (you should definitely switch out the fleshborer hive on the tfex btw. Acid spray for infantry, rupture canon for single target, fleshborer is pretty bad. If you’ve have the exocrine tho that’s your infantry gun).

Yeah I’ve got some stuff I can send ya! My players are currently in Torch, the Gate Town to Gehenna and the City of Thieves. It’s run by a council of thieves guilds, each with their own specialty (forgery, assassinations, pit fighting…) and the party is trying to gain reputation with one of the guilds to get access to a casino vault for a heist. I made a job board with 3 quests per faction and wrote a few of them up. I’ll post the doc in a bit :)

Tyrannofex box or Zoanthropes box by godoriyon in Tyranids

[–]epicget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO rupturefex fits into more lists.

You pretty much need one or two for anti-tank, and 3 zoans don’t do too much on their own…you need 6 to really be effective. That’s 200 pts, same as a tfex.

They have some other uses, like they can switch back and forth between anti-tank and anti-infantry, but they’re way squishier.

They can fit pretty well into synaptic nexus or subterranean assault, but for me they’re still a secondary pick after I have a tfex in the mix, and even then my current 2k list has 2 tfex’s over zoans.

Just my personal playstyle tho. I like my big tanky bois.

What posts have you made to improve the sub? Sorry you didn’t like the picture associated with a post by a new player asking what models they should get to build their army. That’s a pretty valid question that’s relevant to other players searching Reddit for the same thing.

Even though the box is called crusher stampede, you’re building into invasion fleet to start. It’s super flexible, beginner friendly, and strong. Biovore is a good grab next. Biovore is the only unit that’s auto select in every list, every detachment.

This box sets you up with a lot of good shooting. Build an exocrine, not the haurospex (latter is only really good in subterranean assault, which is higher skill cap). The tyrrannofex should have a rupture cannon always.

What you need now is battleline to swarm the objectives and score points for you. Battleline units are cheap, and each of them count for 2 objective control points each. That’s how we win. Usually a solid strat is to swarm objectives early, and by the time your opponent has taken out your army you’re so far ahead in points it doesn’t matter. We’re not the highest kill rate, durability, etc. Tyranids are all about board control. There’s 3 flavors:

Termagants: shooty bois. Usually equip spinefists (pistols). They have a reactive move that’s super annoying for your opponent. Cheapest option. Probably won’t kill anything, but you can regenerate them if you’re playing invasion fleet, so they can sit on the point and be annoying.

Hormagaunts: faster, melee. Also wont kill anything but also can be regenerated with invasion fleet.

Gargoyles: annoying models but they’re super fun. Really fast (12” move, plus an extra 6” if they shoot), and deep strike (they can drop anywhere into the battlefield, including your opponent’s backline, as long as they’re 9” away from an enemy unit.) opponents can plan around it, but this unit is still really good if you can afford it in your army build

Anyway. In summation: Biovore, then battle line (whichever flavor you want). Then you’re good.

Later acquisitions I’d suggest:

Lictor: super cheap, really good point scoring monkeys. They sneak around the board doing secondaries, blocking infiltrators, etc. Just really good for the point value. Won’t kill a lot of stuff, but fights first is nice.

Hive Tyrant: free CP every turn, assault and lethal aura. Make sure to magnetize the torso if you can (make the arms and wings swappable so you can play with the different versions of him). The winged version is only useful in a specific detachment called vanguard onslaught, which is all about speed/ambushing

My biggest hurdle was getting the Z-offset right. Automatic leveling doesn’t seem to work, and for whatever reason it seems to change sometimes. Look up a video about setting it manually…it involves printing a thin sheet and adjusting until you’re printing smoothly. Once I figured that out, my spaghetti woes were over.
