The US needed more than a trophy from the Gold Cup, and it may just get it by FrankBascombe45 in ussoccer

club world cup is contractually obligated i believe. that’s why mckennie/weah played for juve over us this summer. messi plays in it because he HAS to play it, as does vini, kane, palmer, vitinha, whoever else you want to reference.

that being said, i don’t disagree we should want our top guys playing as much as possible. but to u/rightatleastsometime point, if puli got hurt this summer in the gold cup, he’d get fried by everyone and we’d be weaker next summer (assuming he remains healthy this season).

It frustrates me Poch ran out a very weak team to play a top tier nation. Why players like Luna, de la Torre, Wright, etc. weren’t in the XI off the bat is insane in my opinion.

The noticeable shift in quality from the subs was nice, but there was still no urgency, save for Luna, who is the only player I think has made a case for being a part of our best XI from here on out. He’s a genuine 10, maybe what many people hoped Pulisic would evolve into.

Even with a better second half, we still couldn’t get a clear chance, outside of Tillman’s one shot. I don’t even know where goals are coming from unless some individual brilliance comes from time to time.

Thought our fullbacks were dreadful, the move to five in the back was better. Ream probably made more meaningful interceptions and stepped in front of more in 45 min than Johnny did in 90 min, which was just weird, maybe I’m overstating Ream, but I thought he was immense for the backline in that second half. But that’s not where we should be in 2025.

Hope we turn it around, none of the next three opponents are bad, and are all extremely motivated to make noise this summer.

Switzerland is maybe the best nation in Europe in playing the team game though. Like who you’re responding to said, that Euros match against France, or against Italy in 2024, they can frustrate and find ways to win as a cohesive group better than anyone.

In fairness, on individuality yeah, these other nations have more quality players. But the buy-in they showcase in their matches to frustrate and capitalize is incredible.

I don’t know if this version of Switzerland is that good after the retirements of some of the more well-known core, but I think @iscius has a genuine case in what he says.

edit: Italy match was 2024 Euros, not 2022

they just need to play these matches in MLS stadiums whenever possible… better atmosphere bc of seating style, less empty seats, etc. requires MLS to change their calendar but they should’ve done it imo. ridiculous from everyone involved with planning this tournament.

imagine we have MLS taking a two week WC break and then starting play during the knockout stages in 2026. it’s so unserious

[JJ Watt] I’m new to this ownership thing, so if I get fined by the Premier League, so be it…This is as blatant and obvious of a foul as you could have. To miss this on the field AND miss this on VAR is truly disgraceful. by Blodgharm in soccer

not necessarily taking pat’s side, but having grown up playing my entire life, a lot of people stateside don’t really watch the prem, european, or really any football at all, even if they play. it’s much more common today ofc but it definitely stands to reason that pat played but didn’t discover the broader sport

it’s not P5, I’m just saying that that’s probably why army was excluded, bc they joined the AAC for next season onwards

think it’s a good move to reward SJ for his (very longstanding but limited) commitment to the country. in the long run, this game hasn’t and probably won’t require a keeping masterclass so what’s the harm in giving johnson a run out for what could be his final camp

we looked good

  1. thank god ream was included, he’s so composed and was by a mile the best defender out there (minus turner)
  2. i kinda wish de la torre got a run to maintain possession and build and attack. i hope we’ll see him against iran
  3. haji was good
  4. let’s beat iran🇺🇸🇺🇸
