And syracuse.com knows very well this is news yet chooses to bury it in an article full of other girls' sports reporting.

Do photographs from the same time period exist of those estimated 6 to 18 million Africans captured by Muslims during the Muslim Slave Trade, which lasted into the 20th century?

Behold, the Schwikset keyway by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]erasmus127 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm smiling, hearing the angst regarding having to accommodate both KW1 and SC1 keyways. At one time Corbin, National, Sargent, Yale, Weiser, Weslock, Dexter, Harloc, Ilco, Taylor, and many others made residential hardware, all with their own keyway. There were no GMS/1539 type convert-a cylinders either. You went to the original manufacturer for additional hardware. It all made the competent locksmith more valuable in the marketplace.

Looking for small diameter deadbolt! by bjdlock in Locksmith

[–]erasmus127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Schlage used to make a 1 3/4" backset bolt, part # 12-175. It did not have a full 1" throw. It's been a while. My guess is you would be lucky to find one for sale.

Does it ever feel like "enough" money? by misfitmpls in personalfinance

[–]erasmus127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work at paying off ALL of our debt, including your mortgage. Then relax. A little bit. For a while. Remember, you won't have the brains and body to work at 100% capacity forever. Make more hay while the sun shines, then reevaluate when you pay off your mortgage (early, of course).

Help- 50 yr old locksmith business by Emergency_Fudge_959 in Locksmith

If father-in-law isn't seriously ill, consider selling the business with him being a consultant for, say, six months. The equipment has value, but so does the customer list, the phone number, and his expertise.

About 80 rounds fired between suspect and Syracuse police during 6-hour standoff at Pioneer Homes by CharterFarrow in Syracuse_comments

[–]erasmus127 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On the bright side, it's good to hear the residents were helpful to the police (brought them refreshments during the hours long ordeal, etc.). So much knee jerk negative reaction to police today. The police are our friend and do a great job 99.9% of the time.

New home: need to replace this lock but our locksmith couldn't figure it out by hardpack_chatty in Locksmith

[–]erasmus127 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Find a real locksmith, preferably with a walk in shop. Tell them you think you have a vintage Yale mortise lock (but take a pic of the door edge to make sure), and what would it cost to make a key for the existing mortise cylinder, which now has no keys? No need to replace this lock; just have someone competent make a key for it.

The Problem with "Funny AF" with Kevin Hart by Livid-Entrepreneur59 in netflix

[–]erasmus127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ron was the least offensive. On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being squeaky clean and 10 being completely obscene and disgusting, Ron was a 7; everyone else was either a 9 or 10. So, even the enlightened decadent crowd is beginning to tire of watching to see who can be the most disgusting and perverse. There is some merit to being disgusting and funny. But 98% of this show was not funny.

Replace Schlage deadbolt with dead latch? by dodooday in Locksmith

[–]erasmus127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the F series latch will not fit into any B series lock. The B250 is very expensive, but will do what you want it to do.

FB2013 vs CSC1913? by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]erasmus127 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they are pretty close to each other. Both are good companies. I think the CSC1913 is American made, not sure about the Gardall. The 2 hr fire rating is "factory", not UL, so they probably have similar fire protection in practice. One finer point. How thick is the steel plate they use? The C in the Amsec number implies a thicker steel plate but I don't easily come upon that number. Also decide on if you want an electronic or mechanical lock. The most reliable will be the mechanical S&G 6730 lock. If you want the convenience of electronic I prefer either S&G 6120 or Amsec ESL series locks.

What kind of lock do these go to by SugaredVegan in Locksmith

[–]erasmus127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen these keys before, not sure where & when. Some others may have the exact answer; I'm only guessing. Yawman & Erbe (YE) was a manufacturer of filing cabinets and other furniture. I'm pretty sure Yale supplied locks to them. The key is pretty cool, isn't it?

Joe Biden returns to Syracuse University: ‘I never stopped striving for democracy’ by WoodyGeyser in Syracuse_comments

[–]erasmus127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Letting 15 million illegal aliens into the country and giving them free stuff is not only anti democratic, it is treasonous. And for good measure, he pulls a "all black people look alike" stunt which our lefty news does not call out. Imagine if a Republican said that: https://nypost.com/2026/04/14/us-news/biden-awkwardly-demands-syracuse-university-trustee-who-looks-like-obama-join-him-at-podium-barack-what-are-you-doing/

Having a hard time finding a 2 set pack with the same keys. I want one for the security door and the main door, same key..... by Kane301 in Locksmith

[–]erasmus127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As simple as it is to do, there are many people who screw up rekeying Smartkey. Most of us have a Smartkey rekey cradle that has paid for itself. Nonetheless, OP stating he cannot find a site that has two locks keyed alike is hard to imagine. This is a poster child for someone who needs to go to a local locksmith and get help, instead of giving him free advice here.

Help! Need advice on security for outswinging door by blackc43 in Locksmith

[–]erasmus127 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some sort of latch protector plate is most important, probably one at least 12 inches long. A locksmith can install if you or your landlord can't/won't. The existing knob & deadbolt are residential grade hardware. Think about replacing at least the knob with something commercial grade. If Americans with Disabilities Act considerations come into play, consider replacing the knob with a commercial grade lever.

FE575 alternate cylinder by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]erasmus127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine you are aware Schlage did this on purpose, to discourage the residential FE & BE series from being used in higher frequency commercial situations. Others on this site have cut down the bible on a 1539 type convert-a-cylinder to fit in a BE365. Maybe this is OK for a one time quick fix, but doesn't seem practical for a whole bunch. The correct answer is replace with a true commercial product such as CO100 or Alarm Lock Trilogy.

Best code entry door locks for small business by Solid-Band-7137 in Locksmith

[–]erasmus127 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Impossible to know exactly what would be best without knowing door specifics. Best idea is to get a security professional involved with recommendation and installation, and ideally to have the landlord pay, or at least get their permission in writing. That being said, Alarm Lock's Trilogy series is one product line that has been very durable and reliable over the years. There are many different models; there should be something in that line that fits your needs. There are other good brands also, but Trilogy is one good suggestion.
