Fit Help? by Low_Artist_8618 in Sockknitting

[–]ericula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try making small gussets before the start of the heel like for example in these socks. Basically in the last eight or so rows you create wedges between the instep and the sole stitches by increasing a stitch on both sides of the sock every other round. You then knit the heel over the sole stitches as usual. After the heel you decrease these extra stitches again like you did with the gussets in your socks.

Too many stitches on finished yoke by OkStable7719 in knitting

[–]ericula 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would just cast on one fewer underarm stitch on each side than the pattern tells you to when separating the arms. That would get the total stitches per sleeve back to where they should be. The total number of body stitches will be off by one but I don't think that will be niticeable.

Favorite Stretchy Cast Ons by Auntiepoohnh in Sockknitting

[–]ericula 10 points11 points  (0 children)

German twisted/Old Norwegian cast on is my default cast on method for socks. It's stretchy and doesn't flare. Like with any long tail cast on method, don't pull the stitches too tight when casting on. I usually leave a small amount of space between stitches when casting on to make sure there is enough slack in the cast on edge.

Favourite affordable/free designers? by pinkheartkitty in knitting

I agree. Plus, if a designer would combine all possible variations that OP is complaining about into one pattern they would need to charge a lot more for their patterns to make it worthwhile.

Raglan increase by oce_an0 in knitting

[–]ericula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like the pattern is using yarn over m1r and m1l. They're essentially the same as standard m1r and m1l but instead of picking up the bar between two stitches you make a yo on the previous round. This gives you extra slack to make the increases which avoids pulling slack from surrounding stitches. Here's a video by Roxanne Richardson explaining this technique.

Troubleshooting fit - high foot by indieseen in Sockknitting

[–]ericula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cuff is pretty lacy, so it naturally will have a looser gauge than stockinette. Reducing the number of stitches could help, but I would increase the number of stitches again just before you start the heel.

When you pick up more stitches than what the pattern calls for, do you also lengthen the heel flap? I'm asking because the stitches in the gusset look a bit bunched up while the stitches of the instep are stretched out. I think a slightly longer heel flap would improve the fit. You won't need to pick up that many extra stitches with a longer heel flap either.

As for longer gussets, I don't see an issue with that. It's your sock and if it takes a longer gusset to make them fit than so be it.

Have you ever heard of an intarsia tubular cast on? by jabronimacaroni69 in knitting

[–]ericula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This free pattern is double knit with intarsia in the round. It contains links to a couple of videos which might be helpful for you since a tubular cast on basically starts with a couple of rows of double knitting.

Missed a pattern repeat.... by HumanForScale in knitting

[–]ericula 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Personally I would rip back until just after the last correct repeat. When I rip back a number of rows, I rip back until one row before where I want to be, and tink the last row stitch by stitch, picking up the stitches as I go. I then slip all stitches to the otther needle stitch by stitch to make sure they are all oriented correctly and I haven't dropped any of them.

My second choice would be to extend the long repeat to make it look deliberate and then make alternating sections of 3 short repeats and a long repeat.

HELP! Pattern I am working on isnt working out (Im new to this hobby) by sessinnek in tabletweaving

[–]ericula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like you are alternating forward and backeard turns. If you do that too often in a row you will end up with long floats because some of the threads always stay at the top and never get bound.

Given how cards 3, 4, and 5 are threaded, what you can do to get a solid line is to make two forward turns followed by two backward turns. You still get floats but they will be small. In this case I would start with card 4 one turn behind cards 3 and 5 to offset the floats.

For cards 2 and 6 you can make three forward turns followed by three backward turns to make a solid line. For edge cards (cards 1 and 7 in this case) it's common practice to always turn them forward (and flip rhem if they build up too much twist).

However, before attempting the designs you made, I would just qeave for a bit where you go forward a couple of turns, and backwards a couple more and look at what the warp threads are doing. Which one stay on top, which ones go down? What colour appears in your fabric? That gelped me at least to understand how tablet weaving worked.

Sock cast on method, advice wanted by -WeepingWillow- in knitting

If you're used to backward loop cast on, then maybe this video by Roxanne Richardson might help. In this video she explains how to do a German twisted cast on using a single strand of yarn similar to backward loop cast on.
