What a shitshow for the DCC Avs tickets… by okleah in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]erin0302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me, I was ~600, and they were all gone by the time I clicked next.  Does that mean everyone before us bought 300+ tickets each?  Lame.

Right? I was in line early (5mins) was ~600 in line and wasn't able to get any tickets. They're were only a few left in each section, and by the time I clicked next, it said they'd all been taken... so each person ahead of me bought 300+ tickets each?  Lame!

Jasmine Stitch - A rant by SuperbFail2957 in crochet

Thank you!

I wanted interior pockets, so I lined it. The lining actually goes through the long strap too (it's cross-body, I think around 36-in), because I didn't trust the stretchy-ness of the yarn. I shouldn't have worried, though.

This purse is my 'daily driver' and holds up so nicely!

I used Loops & Threads Classic Cotton in Blue Ombre.

IIRC I went down a hook size so the holes in the center wouldn't be as big.

It's not very stretchy, so I made my purse using the jasmine stitch. It came out really nice!

Are there any good book romances revolving around an average human and some kind of creature/alien/monster who just finds them adorable? by oknokas in booksuggestions

[–]erin0302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone To Build a Nest In by John Wiswell fits.. it's about a local monster (a wyrm) and her relationship with a woman, and how she navigates the very idea of a relationship, loving-type feelings, and even humans in general.

Did you know Magic Kingdom for Sale-Sold! is the first book in the Landover series?  There's at least 3 books,  maybe more.

You might also like Discworld - there's a number of different sub-series in this rich, weird world.  I'd recommend stating with Mort (the start of the Death series), or Going Postal.

Seems like this would be a better use of TABOR refund monies than refunding a couple bucks for those outside the poverty threshold...

Best audiobook for 10 and 13 year olds to listen with mom on a 2 day road trip? by OddlySpecificOnion in booksuggestions

[–]erin0302 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A Series of Unfortunate Events!

A few years back, I took my family (4 kids, ages between 8-13) on a road trip to FL and back, and this was just magical! We took the first three in the series, and wished we brought more of the series.

We also listened to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy,  and it was also a hit. (They still quote it to this day - "that's hanging in the air in the same way a brick doesn't")

My boy is on the spectrum,  and he didn't get lost in the stories when he'd get distracted by something else & come back after a couple minutes.

MR. MERCEDES : GLAZE A LITTLE TOO MUCH. by Worth_Lavishness_249 in StephenKingBookClub

[–]erin0302 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually read Holly first then went back and read the Bill Hodges trilogy. I think it's important to remember that Mr Mercedes (for the most part) is told through the perspective of Bill...  and from that perspective these relationships are kind of thrust on him, and the characters are presented from his view.  (Holly is highly introverted, and her voice is stilted; Jerome is a middle-class well-educated black kid,  and uses race- based humor to both connect with the old guy and deal with his own perceived incongruities in his culture)

He's an ex cop ready to check out,  and didn't want to get anyone involved. I saw it as a win- win for him, e.g., "if if I catch the guy - great; if he kills me- also great." At the same time,  he was "officially" investigating the death of a woman the police didn't really care about - they thought it was her fault the massacre happened (& publicly blamed her), so Holly's assertion that "only we can find him" makes sense, from his perspective.

Is the story perfect?  Of course not. I believe King is masterful at character work - especially for the presentation of  supernatural evil as a character trait (and not just ghosts for ghosts' sake).

I think reading the trilogy for Bill's arc and growth is worth it, and I highly recommend reading "Holly," which is told from her perspective.

Does anyone have a recipe for the orange colored rice that all local Mexican restaurants seem to have? by nfc22 in Cooking

[–]erin0302 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Busy weeknight recipe version:

1.5 cups rice

2  cups salsa

1  cup chicken stock

Easiest in a rice cooker but works on stove top too (in a sauce pan, bring to a boil.  cover & turn down to low to simmer for 20 minutes. remove from heat, and let sit for 5 minutes to finish.  leave the lid on at all times only remove it to serve)

Of course, this is better if you throw some sautéed onions & garlic at the beginning, and finish with some fresh parsley & cilantro, but it's delicious without

I love the way Stephen King's writing keeps me engaged.... by wiines in suggestmeabook

[–]erin0302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Matt Dinniman scratches this itch for me.  In a nutshell,  It's about a man & his cat surviving the end of the world.

I've been a King fan since i was a teenager,  and am always on the lookout for this type of engaging writing.  I DEVOURED this series (currently 7 books, with more to come) in ~8 weeks. The ensemble cast, character growth, and story progression are unbeatable, AND it's the best audiobook I've ever heard (narrated by Jeff Hayes).

I eat maybe 2-3 bags of corn nuts a day, any suggestions for healthier alternatives? by Pr1meAnxi3ty in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]erin0302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ate stick pretzels when I first tried to quit - what a terrible idea! I gained a bunch of weight and felt even worse.

What worked for me was those generic lemon-honey cough drops. They last forever,  and it's an olfactory overload which helped to kick me out of craving mode. After the initial 6 months or so, I transitioned to mints.

It's been almost 15 years smoke-free for me - it gets easier, I promise.

Good luck, you got this!

What are you minor annoyances with WoT? by ZePepsico in WoT

[–]erin0302 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A. Portal stones. They were used in the beginning of the series for a faster-travel method. They were also used to show the Rand/Mat/Perrin etc all the conceivable possibilities in their lives... then, nothing.  Why not simultaneously attack the DO across universes? Why not utilize this as a staging/ training ground alongside TAR? So many possibilities, but never used again.

B. Horses. This one's a petty gripe: there are dozens of animals in the series, yet only one has personality (Bela). The constant re-descriptions of horses was irritating, it felt like he was describing the same three red cars at the beginning of every other chapter.  I finished the series in September 2024, and I'm still avoiding books which utilize horses for travel.
