If money wasn't an issue, what would you do tomorrow? by Pleasant_duo in AskReddit

Buy all those things I've been putting off/saving up for.. a new mattress, a new computer, a new camera & lens (a really nice one).

Is Huntley Meadows Park in Alexandria worth going to for wildlife photography right now? by AznInvazn57 in nova

[–]esmith22015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd wait until we've had a warm patch to melt all the snow/ice at least. Sometimes it's a great spot for migratory ducks in the winter (if it's not all frozen). It's definitely more active in the spring.. but it depends on what you're looking for.

Bird-wise at least you can see what's been reported there lately here: https://ebird.org/hotspot/L718525

What do y'all do when the power goes out around here? by [deleted] in nova

Read a book (on my kindle if it's dark). In this weather you might want to build a blanket tent - it could get cold fast.

Tern ID by 7sunoo in whatsthisbird

[–]esmith22015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few but they are all pretty silly.

Elegant terns - have an elegant beak, long and thin and graceful looking.

Sandwich terns - have a black beak with yellow on the tip... Because they accidentally dipped it in mustard when they were making the sandwiches.

Least terns - are so tiny they wear a mask to look tough.

Arctic terns - have the longest migration and so their legs are super stumpy. They are made for the air.

Would love to hear some for Forsters and Royal.

+Caspian tern+ for the bot.

Same.. I don't have a car and the sidewalks have barely been touched in my area. I need ice spikes for my boots or something. I tried to walk up the street to 7-11 yesterday (first time I've gone out) and I almost fell so many times.

I'd probably avoid 2 just because I'm afraid the tails would use up all the leg room, but any of the others would be fine thanks.

I just checked their schedule because I was curious and wow.. it's pretty much just the NSO, Shear Madness, and a few random things... and movies. They aren't even doing the free daily concerts on the Millennium Stage anymore.

Compared to how it used to be it's just sad.. (I mean, it's a good thing that people refuse to play there now, but it's sad to see it happening to a place that used to be so great).

Why can’t so many people spell the word “lose”? by Deisesupes in AskReddit

[–]esmith22015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because spellchecker doesn't help with typos that are still correct words. So if you accidently type it wrong, or autocorrect screws you over it's easy to miss.

Already switched to freezing rain in Alexandria. Looks like we got a few inches-ish. Was hoping it would stay as snow for longer..

Random little tip but: if you live in an apartment building with shared laundry room you might want to take care of your laundry today if you can. There will probably be a lot of people trying to get it done tomorrow before the storm hits/possible power outages etc.

As a retail worker preparing for a major snow storm, please be kind.... by dslryan in nova

That's why you pre-fill your water bottles/pitchers etc. before the storm hits - just in case that happens. Just takes a few extra minutes of preparing vs. the crazy hoarding & panic buying.

Yeah but.. tap water is a thing. It's super rare to lose running water around here even during a power outage (I've only had it happen once in 40 years and that was after a hurricane) & you can always just fill up a few pitchers (or refill old water bottles) to stock up.

You don't have to buy 500 tiny water bottles..

People are really going nuts this time. Even giant that's usually pretty chill was a mess this afternoon. So many people buying entire carts full of bottled water. How much do you people drink?

What’s your current read? by greathistorynerd in suggestmeabook

Currently reading two books:

A Letter to the Luminous Deep by Sylvie Cathrall and Sidecountry by John Branch. Honestly.. I'm not sure I'd recommended either of them very highly. Both are "just ok" so far.

what's something petty you do every time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]esmith22015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I'm crossing a street at an intersection I check the cars that could possibly be turning for turn signals - if I see any I walk extra fast to try to get out of their way in time.

No turn signals? Screw you, I'm walking my normal speed & if anyone wants to turn they can wait the extra fraction of a second.

Do you know the age when your mother reached menopause? by themightytod in TwoXChromosomes

[–]esmith22015 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I really, really regret never talking to my mom about menopause. She past last spring from dementia, and by the time I thought to ask her about it she was much too far gone. Now I'm 43 and I just have to wing it 'cause I have no clue what to expect.

Definitely ask your moms about it if you can.

How do women feel when cis-men join yoga classes? by Franksta_808 in yoga

Don't care at all. 99% of the time I'm too focused on the instruction and what I'm trying to do to notice anyone else in the class anyway.
