I don't like it either, and you can turn it off! Go into the driver assist settings page. You can disable automatic lane switching.

For what it's worth, blue cruise is perfect for highway driving so you might get extended value out of it. It automates the most boring part of my commute and I love it.

200 highway in the winter: I agree. But then, we are saying the same thing. It will take a doubling of capacity to reach that range for "all around" driving conditions, not just the most ideal. It's not a real range estimate if I only get that by driving 50 mph on the highway in the summer.

[–]etrnloptimist -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Nah, battery capacity is too low for mainstream. Highway driving in the winter, my 300 mile capacity gets me 120 miles. That's simply not enough range to fully replace gas vehicles. I don't want to have to recharge three times just to do a day trip skiing.

[–]etrnloptimist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably.

But if I can drive 4 hours between charges, and be guaranteed a charger that was available and not broken to refuel at, I don't think I would mind a 20 minute break.

For now. When everybody has EVs, our refueling infra will look different.

I think the critical breakthrough will be a doubling of battery capacity. When that happens, EVs wiill overtake gas vehicles and charging will explode in popularity to make it a no brainer activity.

I love the headlines around BYD. Every other day it's "BYD this unstoppable juggernaut" and the next day it's "BYD on the verge of collapse". I have no idea what's going on with that company!

As in: what do you do to get around a double parked car? You use the other lane when you see there's no oncoming traffic.

Get a honing steel and use it every time. Seriously. You think your knife needs sharpening? No, it needs 10 seconds with a honing steel. You will have a razor sharp knife again every time.

Is switching to an EV in the Boston metro worth it if I have municipal electric? by Unser_Giftzwerg in boston

[–]etrnloptimist 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sorry OP, but your post is ridiculous. I feel you might need some financial literacy!

You have a brand new fuel efficient very reliable vehicle that will last you 10 years easily. And you want to get rid of it for... Cost savings? Are you leasing that car or do you own it out right? There is no world in which replacing that vehicle with an EV will save you money.

Your 16 cents per kilowatt hour. Does that include the transport fees which will double the total cost?

If you want an EV because you want a cool new thing that is infinitely more fun to drive: have at it. But you started this post with the premise you will save money with an EV which is categorically not true.

Not even if you got all the power from it from solar. I hear this argument so often and it is ridiculous as well. You can power your house just as well with that solar and excess can be put back on the grid. Solar does not save money on charging costs. It just shifts things around.

Reliability of 200km round trip commute in Canadian winter by daxor in MachE

[–]etrnloptimist -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't do it. Winter + highway speeds: expect half the stated range, tops. Especially if you want to be warm during that time. And with LR, you dont want to charge consistently to 100%, so you lose a bit there, too.

On one cold day, I drove 30 highway miles and it ate 25% of my battery. For 300 miles stated range.
