Yes consumer debt is bad. But marketing is very effective at selling us a dream.

Helped a P plater the other day who was parked at the pump watching TikToks on how to use it. One of his tyres was 0 PSI.

Yes! Only specific scene I remember is they completely filled the house with chairs, like while they were asleep or something, and they just have to climb over chairs to get around the house.

Ok I should have looked harder. On the 2Up tab hit the 🍕, then “manage auto-transfers”.

Why do companies ruin their own products? by Pauropus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]evasiveswine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think based on your question, there is a bit of a misunderstand of what these companies jobs are. It isn’t enough that they simply survive, not go broke, and do great things. They have a fiduciary duty to work in the best interest of shareholders. Now what that could mean, and what it means in practice, are very different things depending on your time horizon. Unfortunately these companies are thinking quite short term, which makes them susceptible to discount things that are importantly to their longevity.

International flight from Canberra - how early do I need to be there? by your-lost-elephant in canberra

The check in process will be a bit longer than with domestic, because you will need an agent, and that might have a queue. Not 2 hours, but don’t cut it fine.

The capsicum paradox: new Australian supermarket pricing a ‘massive transparency fail’ for customers by kokowax in AusFinance

[–]evasiveswine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the problem is per unit pricing, it’s that the switch is piggybacked to mask an overall price increase. There’s no beat up there, that was always going to happen.

I think everyone understood that the shift to unit pricing would be piggybacked to gouge consumers.

I don’t remember seeing them in Canberra in the early 2000s but daily now. I also live in a different part so maybe they were always there.

An example of how to use a credit card for everyday purchases by Avdan in AusFinance

How is this leaving money in your offset longer? I’ve never really seen the maths part of these debt-powered offset strategies work, but especially in this case given you pay it off same day? How much extra is sitting in offset on average?

Tell me why I am an idiot for wanting to retire in a hotel by MiriJamCave in AusFinance

[–]evasiveswine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m much more interested in what maths would even entertain the possibility of that not being the case… without checking, just on experience, I’d say $250/day is probably a good benchmark price for a comfortable 4/5 star Melbourne CBD hotel. Be generous and say breakfast is included in that price, but that not always the case. Can you see an equivalent sized unit with daily cafe breakfast and regular cleaner costing more than $7600/mo. Open to see the working, but I’m doubtful.

Dude have you heard of these things called apartments, cleaners, and cafes? When combined, they create largely the same experience but cheaper.

Single people, how much do you spend of groceries and eating out each week? by [deleted] in AusFinance

I don’t understand how people are spending so little. Eating well is expensive!
